This was the first game I ever played. EVER and is the reason I’m a gamer today. Mom was stuck on the boss of the second level for years. When I was 7, I’d sneek into my parents room to play the game - because I didn’t know if I was allowed to play video games or not. One day Mom caught me and said it was ok. It was April on a weekend, when I got to the point Mom was stuck at: Mom was outside dealing with the flower bed weeds when I beat the boss. I remember yelling to her outside the window and she came running up to see for herself. After that the whole family got involved with playing the game. It’s one of my best memories.

Reminds me of the times my dad, his girlfriend at the time and I was competing over the high score in "jezzball". It came to a point where it was so ridiculous amounts of points, that I would just cheat by editing the high score through a hex editor. I don't think he has an idea of what was going on, even now some 20 years later. :D

the best part about an rpg is when you're playing really late at night and you decide to spend the night at an inn right before you save in order to replenish your health. this is especially satisfying after you've had a really good run and leveled up your character to a high degree with greater experience and more powerful weapons and armor (you know... the illusion of success when you've done nothing but sit on your butt for hours). anyway... there's usually a minute "sleepy-time" melodic piece that accompanies the act, which helps to burn the cathartic image into your mind, and subsequently aids in lulling you to sleep when you yourself go to bed after turning off the game. sooooooooooo relaxing and peaceful. =)

Games like this is why I love emulation so much. Being able to save and load anywhere anytime in a split second takes so much of the frustration out of difficult sections. Never heard of this game, just working my way through the SNES USA library and stumbled onto it. So far one of the better SNES games I've ever played. Most of them hold my interest for about 3 minutes, but I'm an hour into this one and will continue playing.

Some of the platforming required is crazy hard (at least for me). There were a few rooms that tool me 30 tries or more to get right. I will say this for anyone trying this game out for the first time - the boomerang weapons are where its at for boss fights. Believe me, just spam boomerang in the boss fights that come after you get it and you will annihilate them.

This game is a perfect example of how lack of detail (visual, explanatory, environmental) creates an atmospheric mystery that is irreplaceable.. many games today try to do that with heavy pixelation, but most miss the point. This game cemented it's very own unique emotion through all its low-res dimensions. It's definitely in my childhood hall of fame.

4:20 Um...he's right outside. Like, this is the point where you're in the four exit room. Two doors down finds Rein waiting in the save room for the floor(It's part of a shortcut you open up nearby). Not saying there aren't other moments where you do something like it later(Ice Palace is just rife with loops, backtracking, and finding out where to go), but this one isn't one of those. I am a fan of this one, and he failed to go too much in depth into the fairy system. There are 9 types, 4 attackers and 5 support. One of the supports is a light for dark rooms, so it can be called an item in most other games. The other 8 though are useful in their own ways, with the attacks firing in different ways, and at different strengths, whereas the other four supports have different effects. You have stat raising pair for strength and defense, which are pretty high buffs at around 20 at max level. Then you have a healing fairy, and one that functions as a revival item, sacrificing one level per revival. There are places to gain infinite EXP orbs too, so he can be pretty useful there. That all said, I can still enjoy this one, though that bit he mentions with the blacksmith. My thought even as a kid was capitalistic. Namely, okay, then I'm gonna hold onto this scale until you run out again. Not too hard there. You can't, as you need his tunnel to reach the second dungeon, but still, always made me mad.

Fantastic game, playing this on an emu in 2021. I seriously recommend this to EVERYONE who loves the 2D Zelda games. Masses of puzzles, and masses of charm. My only gripe is that there are only 2 towns in the entire game. Reckon they should have added a different town for each dungeon. Still an amazing game. 9.999/10

Eh, graphics were never a priority for me. Don't get me wrong: if I played a game that had some amazing graphics (at the time), I was quite awed - Out of This World is one particular one that I can recall feeling that way with, with even my mother chiming in on how amazing they looked. But I was such a huge fan of RPGs and Adventure games that I knew graphics meant nothing as long as the story and gameplay were great. :) Never got around to playing Secret of the Stars since I just didn't know about it for a long time, but the first Lufia is actually one of my favorite non-mainstream RPGs of the era. I still haven't completed Lufia 2, but it has always kinda bugged me how popular it is despite the fact that the first Lufia quite literally begins with Lufia 2's final stretch. I think if they were reversed, I'd probably have completed Lufia 2 a long time ago. ;)

Worst puzzles in the game have to be the "Entropy" Rooms in the last dungeon. NNNGH. A room with a solid black floor with a TON of invisible walls. Everything else in the game I found a bit easy, 'cept those rooms. Oh, and... if you want to level up your faeries... there's a screen just south of the first town (gotta beat the first dungeon first) where a particular enemy will ALWAYS drop a faerie orb when killed. Kill the enemy let the faerie get the orb, then go up a screen then back down to respawn the enemy. Fully leveled up faeries are godmode powerful in this game, especially the Attack + Health Restore faerie combination (also keep the Defense one around too).

There's tons of useful tutorials out there, way more useful than I could ever make. Play game and record footage - Write review - Record voiceover - Edit voiceover - Edit footage on top of voiceover and game music. Software used: Adobe Audition and Sony Vegas

Cool, if you want a free alternative to Audition, there's Audacity. After that it's just game capture stuff, most of which I use OBS for

Oh yeah. I used to use Audacity in 2007 to record songs. I also have Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer, which is even simpler than Audacity, when it comes to dragging, dropping, and recording the sound files.

Brendon Melling: Don't feel bad, some my childhood mispronounciations were even more retarded; for the first couple of years I was Mega Man fan, thise games' antagonist had his name mispronounced as "Dr. Willie", while I didn't stop referring to "Milon's Secret Castle" as "MILTON'S Secret Castle" until a couple of weeks ago when I AVGN's take on that game for the first time! :D

This is Zelda if 7th saga had children with it. That sword swipe movement, exactly the same. The boomerang. Movements of PC/npc. The graphics and text are clearly 7th saga. I remember the rental, never picked it up.

Touts for this game: Become valedictorian magna cum laude at your magic school with this one weird trick! (...which is, getting all of your classmates killed) Although that will flatten the grade curve real quick, the accreditation process might also be difficult since your school's been wiped off the map. But then you will finally deserve to be dubbed.. the Brain Lord

For some reason I always thought Brain Lord was intended to be the prequel to the Dragon Quest series. Of course that doesn't make much sense. Also, just realized "Cash-In" the Bounty Hunter. How on earth did I miss that one?

How are the controls ? The graphics looks like the 7th saga and if im not mistaked you said it was made by the same developers. 7th saga was pretty much on a grid and a full blown RPG, seeing the jumping and the fighting, it kind of look like games that would have bad controls, but its hard to say without the controller in hand.

Well, you waited your whole life, so one extra year until the answer is not that bad. I'm not sure if the floor had 5 or 6 buttons. Their values are their positions, left to right. Hint is 3 numbers, multiplied 30, summed 10. so you press 2nd, 3rd and 5th (2+3+5=10, 2*3*5=30) and door opens. And if you want t know what was inside that door, it's another puzzle. "12, 52, X; greater in size, but equivalent in time" or something like that. 6 buttons on the floor. I spent hours bruteforcing the buttons until the epiphany it was a year length (12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days), and door opened with 3rd, 6th and 5th buttons pressed. The prize for that? a cheese and a boomerang.
