We’ve all heard that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but where does that idea come from? And is it true? On today’s episode, Vanessa Hill joins us to uncover the history of breakfast and whether or not we can truly determine if it is the day’s most important meal.

Can we do a topic on how and when drinking caffeine in the morning has an effect and you. And why we started drinking coffee in the morning.

@Lol your really funny bro There are a lot of other things which would do this as well, e.g. certain types of tea or some kinds of food. (Or some kinds of breakfast? :D ) Coffee is a plant which is not naturally occuring in many countries, especially not in Europe or the US. Coffee is an article of importation and therefore I could imagine not affordable for everyone at the beginning. And as said it is not the only thing that was imported around the same time (think of the East Indian tee trading). Aside from that drinking coffee (or anything with much caffeine) regularly in large amounts like many people working in offices do can cause a caffeine dependence. Which means coffee helps you to get as much awake as a person who doesn't consume caffein for a month or two. It just gets you on a "normal" level. (And believe me I know what I'm talking about after I switched from a lot of black/green tea to fruit tea for a few weeks.) So I really support this idea and I hope she reads it and makes an episode about it! It's a very interesting topic. ^^

There's a lot of questions here. To answer a few: We (as in America) started drinking coffee to replace tea. Coffee as a morning routine took off during the industrial revolution when 14-16 hr work days were the norm and even industrial workers could afford coffee because roasting and packaging innovation, as well as the way we were mucking around in Central and South America, made it cheap. When coffee began as a beverage it was probably used by religious groups to stay awake through the night prayers, that was long before America was America. After that, it was variously banned and embraced across Eurasia. Most countries with an established culture around coffee either grow it or at some point had a colonial-ish relationship with a coffee growing country. Fun fact, coffee does grow in the States. It grows in Hawaii and some people have been experimenting with trying to grow it in California.

I started drinking coffee when I was 37 years old. I drank it for breakfast, in Italy, because the standard breakfast there seemed to be espresso and a cigarette. I could not find a bowl of oatmeal anywhere, and was living in a boarding house.

I always skip breakfast. It makes me feel queasy throughout the morning. Even if it’s as small as an orange. I typically don’t get hungry until around lunch time.

Same. All of my friends look at me crazy when they knew I don't eat breakfast. I will only eat when I'm hungry.

I'm much more on the side of skipping breakfast or keeping it very small - especially if I'm doing desk work throughout the day. I simply don't become hungry until basically lunch time. However, when I know I will be doing a lot of physical activity or labor in the coming day I make a point of eating first thing in the morning to sustain the higher energy use.

I was wondering whether the quote “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper” could imply that breakfast was considered an important meal even before industrial revolution??? Ps- i love your videos.... they’re really informative!!

I spent most of my life being vastly overweight - well over 300 pounds. Then I suffered a traumatic brain injury which, among other things, led to my losing more than 140 pounds. I have kept it off for the past five years mostly by skipping breakfast along with eating much smaller meals the rest of the day - usually a light lunch and a small snack for dinner. I have no plans to ever eat breakfast again.

Patrick Spreng that's great. I gained weight after being ill and an operation. Took me ages to figure out how to lose it. A low carb diet was key in the end. I don't eat breakfast either, never have. I can't even look at food till at least an hour or two after waking up. It's not needed.

In farming regions, there is Breakfast (often After several hours of heavy work), Dinner (preparing for four or more hours), and Supper (a small meal after all the work is over). In town, there's Breakfast (to prepare for three hours of paper pushing), Lunch (a small meal away from home), and Dinner (arguably the largest meal of the day).

I'm definitely pro breakfast because I tend to be hungry within an hour of waking up, and skipping breakfast has caused me to be light headed before lunch. What I eat varies. Usually leftovers, or if there aren't any, an egg and slice of toast, with avocado if I have it, or cereal if I'm in the mood for sugar. While I hate skipping breakfast, I know there are people who prefer it, and tbh I think it all depends on your metabolism, daily activities, and sleep habits. Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day for me, personally, but not everyone else.

I guess I'm interesting in adding a couple aspects to this discussion. Some people have been discussion ghrelin levels in the body that get suppressed when you sleep. Eating sort of breaks that, and with the newish health benefits of caloric restriction and intermittent fasting, one of the easiest health choices might be to just say breakfast is a lie.

It depends on your metabolism. For some, this is definitely right, but somebody else might have a blood sugar crash. Example: me vs. my husband. Diet/nutrition is not one size fits all.

What about intermittent fasting diets, etc? I've recently stopped eating between 8 pm and Noon, lost a few pounds im a couple of weeks and actually feel better in general.

Yah, our bodies get used to when we eat. When you intermittent fast your body doesn't really crave food until around your normal first meal time (mine is 3-4). Intermittent fasting also gives your body time to work on repairing cells and other things because it doesn't have go worry about digesting 24/7.

Eating one meal a day has helped me lose weight and control my diabetes. Usually that meal is dinner. Occasionally I’ll also have breakfast or brunch, but maybe once a week or so.

Eat when hungry and stop eating right before you feel full. That should do it ;)

Sarah Haddad My thinking exactly. However, for many that doesn't work. They tend to be labeled as having eating disorders, which is typically an accurate label. With anorexia, you simply don't feel as hungry because your brain believes so thoroughly that you need less food. With high eating, the switch for "no longer hungry" often doesn't exist. With bulemia, you eat enough, but purge it in private because fewer calories means you'll keep weight off, right? Actually not, but that's the thinking. Bulemia is actually the most terrifying, as it's the least visible. So for the mentally healthy, eat when healthy stop when full is cool, but for others you need to maybe be a little more precise.

"Stop when full" doesn't work for me. I'm 32, and I'm still trying to figure it out. Intermittant fasting, ie limiting my opportunities to eat, seems mostly workable for me, but then it often makes me grumpy. Grumpy + having a toddler is not a good combo, so I end up not being super strict about it.

Actually, its a very dangerous way of thinking. I used to do that and I developped epilepsy throughout the years because i ate whenever I wanted until i was full. Fasting is really good to slow down your metabolism and makes it function more efficiently. In my case, it cured my epilepsy. Food is a drug. If youre used to eat in the morning and skip breakfast, youll have difficulty to concentrate during the day. The more often you eat, the more youre dependent.

I think it more likely that over our millions of years of evolution, our body doesn't necessarily discern the difference of which meal is eaten at which time of the day, but rather the amount and type of food and overall lifestyle over a longer period of time that would make the most difference in our overall health. However, I would love to see more objective studies done on this subject so we can add it to our knowledge!

Hey, I'm a little late here but actually the time makes a huge difference: maybe you can start your research (if not already done) with the changes that happen ''hormone-wise'' in our body when we sleep A lot of things are going on when our body is waking up, and I already read about the link between this and hunger/digestion in the morning

In Brazil we eat bread with butter (and sometimes cheese, ham or bologni) with milk and coffee. But there are regional versions, with yams or tapioca (a dish made with cassava flour). It's always very light and many people doesn't even eat the bread, just drink coffee. To eat a complete meal at morning is considered very strange, because the most important meal of the day is lunch. Dinner usually is lighter too, completely opposite to United State, I believe.

When I was growing up. I had A peanut butter sandwich with chocolate milk, and when available orange juice. The reason by what I thought was an odd choice of food for breakfast, (when other people I knew got bacon and eggs,) was because "Peanut butter sticks to your ribs." My father was a farmer when he was growing up and I am sure he needed all of the calories he could muster in North Dakota in the 1950s. I would say if you had to work hard breakfast is very, very important.

I’ve stopped eating breakfast and have switched to a small snack bar at 11. It allows me to sleep later and not run late a breakfast is what takes me a long time in the morning. I don’t notice myself being hungry and even when I am I am often on the go so a small snack is all I have time to eat. As I work mostly late at night (start at 4pm finish at 1am) the focus and energy from food will be more important and helpful if it comes from lunch or dinner. Even when I’m not working these hours I like to stick to the same cycle of large lunch and carbs rich dinner so that my day has some sense of regularity.

Everytime you eat you spike your insulin, doing this multiple times a day causes resistance (type 2 diabetes). Dr.Jason Fung is a nephrologist who has some really good videos on youtube and books about eating habbits, fasting/breakfast. Tons of amazing info I recommend to anyone.

Breakfast is important on workdays to me because my workplace is filled with unhealthy foods. I'm glad that you point out that for some people it reduces binge eating. Customers also come into my work on a Walk-in basis meaning I may not get my lunch until later in the day. It is inportant that I remain professional and not get "hangry".

I never heard that breakfast was so important. Only my grandparent had some kind of a hierarchy for meals, lunch being at the top. I can't remember when I ate breakfast the last time, only a choco croissant or a hot chocolate sometimes.

I'm never hungry in the morning. So breakfast feels like forcefeeding to me. Also, the more often I eat, the hungrier I get. Therefore I like eating less meals a day.

I'm always hungry pretty much right after I wake up. If I don't eat breakfast I turn into a she-hulk, so, for me, breakfast is pretty important. That all being said, I know plenty of people who just aren't hungry in the morning and can function like normal human beings without it. In the end, I tend to think it depends on the person.

My husband HAS to eat breakfast every morning, he gets hangry when he doesn't lol, our daughter is the same way... I on the other hand never eat breakfast, I am rarely hungry before noon, and even then all I want is a small snack like fruit or nuts. I would say that dinner is the only full meal that I eat on a daily basis. I've been like this my whole life. I do try to make sure that my food choices when I eat are nutritionally well balanced and healthy choices. Neither of us eat much junk food, though there is the occasional indulgence or guilty pleasure.

Subbed! Also, @4:53 the newspaper says, "5,000 doctors say you should eat bacon for breakfast!" but 5 seconds earlier you say it was only 4,500. I guess it was the prime of yellow journalism. Good thing we only have "fake news" today. :P

I am a pro-breakfast person. I no longer feel I have to eat right after waking up. A better practice is drinking 8 to 16 ounces of water shortly after waking up, since your body is essentially dehydrated after a night's sleep. But I do believe that not eating breakfast, and especially not eating lunch, causes people to binge eat on unhealthy junk foods later in the day.

breakfast, lunch, and dinner. this order not only makes sense but it sounds better.( switch them around lunch dinner breakfast?!) First meal to start the day(7:00, 7:30,8:00 the latest). Lunch Second(12:00,12:30 1:00 the latest) Dinner third(7:00, 7:30,8:00 the latest) Breaking the fast, Breakfast. Starting the fast. after dinner.It also depends on peoples schedules. Most of all what we eat is really important.

Ackee, salt fish, and fried dumplings is one of my favorite breakfasts. I’m not Jamaican but my Jamaican friends introduced me to this and it’s so much better than cold cereal or overly sweet pastries.

We eat it for lunch and dinner too😂. Our breakfast are traditionally heavy like breadfruit,boil or fry dumplings etc and it’s much better than the pancake or egg and sausage.

Fish at breakfast. My grandmother would make fried fish and grits once in a while. Her father was a Gullah. I never thought of that link.

I've eaten breakfasts ranging from British style Full Breakfast to what I've heard called as "Spanish Breakfast" - a glass of water and two cigarettes. All were good to me. Well, maybe not the cigarettes so much but hey, I was young and stupid at the time.

I am definitely going for the no breakfast. Dinner and to some degree lunch is better (type of food) imo, kinda intermittent fasting ftw.

Right. Not eating for 16 hours is supposed to be healthy. I sleep from ~3am to ~10a.m. and usually have two meals: at around 4pm and around 11 p.m.

This is why I eat any type of food I feel like, morning vs evening is a tad silly way to pick if you eat some fish or some cereal. I think the modern trend of cereal, eggs, toast, muffin, ect for breakfast is more closely connected to speed of preparation. I came to that thought because I tend to eat tastier but longer to prepare meals for breakfast if I wake up early, and when I do eat cereal or fried eggs for a lunch or a dinner it's always connected to a low amount of time for preparing a real meal. (Well that and I can't eat a lot of processed meals due to not being able to have soy or wheat, bleh).

Feeding yourself does not necessarily mean you have to eat 3 whole heavy meals a day. I don't like eating breakfast so I eat nuts and berries, yogurts, glucerna or ham and cheese instead of a big sandwich. Don't feel forced to eat a heavy breakfast cause of this whole "breakfast is the most important" thing. It took me like 20 years to reach this conclusion.

I find that eating makes me sleepy and prefer to eat before bedtime, but when I wake up, I'm hungry again so I eat a breakfast.

I kind of like the idea of several smaller meals during the day, but there are strong cultural and practical difficulties in doing this. And I'm loving Danielle's enthusiasm in the videos.

If your into fitness, eating dribs and drabs of protein (8-10g per smaller snacking Multiple times a day) will have no “positive” effect on your body. Muscle isn’t triggered unless the diet ( protein content) is right. Find out your Daily Recommended Protein intake and break that up into 4 meals. Get at least 25-30g protein per each 4 meals especially if you’re over 25.

In France lunch is considered the most important meal, breakfast is small; usually a croissant and coffee but lunch is large meal with courses; in small towns and rural areas shops still close for 2 hours at lunch.

Haven’t had a regular breakfast in around 5 years. It helps with my blood sugars throughout the day. A year after I started I went low carb. 3 years ago I went mainly carnivore except for seasonings and rarely fruit on special occasions. I feel the best when I’m strictly carnivore.

The meal that breaks your fast IS the most important meal of the day. Whether or not you slept well, and regardless of when you wake up, your waking hours at home are when you have the most conscious control over WHAT you will eat. Stock your home with whole grains/cereals and fresh fruit, and you'll find that it is much easier to simply eat that than order a pizza. Skip that opportunity and head out into the world still fasting, and "dollars to donuts", you'll likely end up spending your dollars on donuts - or a muffin (cake) and/or a latté (coffee flavoured fatty syrup).

I eat two meals a day. 1)Oatmeal or cornbread or a can of spaghetti 2) Ramen. A serving of fruit or vegetable. Bread to fill in if REALLY hungry.

In Australia (as your friend there might know) Toast lightly buttered and even lighter smeared with Vegemite (loaded with B vitamins) and a slice of tasty cheese (what my fellow Americans call mild cheddar) seems to be one of the more common breakfasts. I have to admit that my first taste of Vegemite had me wiping my tongue with the dish sponge, but what did I know I measured a "little" with an American eye LOL! Eleven years later, I gave it another try, but only when my husband prepares it and it's not bad. It's kind of like if dark beer was salted and a semi solid.

Yes for breakfast! I literally cannot function without a meal in the morning. It’s my nutritional routine without which I just feel unwell. :)

When I wake up I don’t automatically eat; however I do think of breakfast food when I get hungry which is around noon. I love eating breakfast foods.

I'm not hungry in the mornings until I've been up for a couple of hours. I usually just have a coffee & that's it.

It’s hard for me to go without breakfast, or some kind of food as soon as I get up because I’m usually starving when I wake, but I believe people should just eat when they’re hungry. I know some people who have no appetite in the morning or feel sick if they eat too early and I don’t think breakfast is right or necessary in those cases.

Traditional bacon/eggs/toast are fabulous any time, anywhere. But honestly, your body doesn't care what you eat or when, so long as you feed it good nutrients, low processed fats & sugars, and sufficient carbs & proteins.

Well, I definitely agree that it is break-fast... and I am anti-sugary/sweet foods as a meal... otherwise, I don't really care... as long as it's Not vegemite!!! Never vegemite!!!

Just a note from a dietitian and performance coach. Any method of eating is going to depend on the person's biology and activity levels. If you are even moderately active then i recommend eating something within an hour of waking up. Also, it depends on quality of food over quantity always. It's hard to study real health effects of just eating breakfast because of the general inactivity of the world and lack of quality foods.

Some friends get nausea if they eat in the morning, i get headaches and faint if I don't. There is no one size fits all when it comes to health, i suppose.

as someone who never ate breakfast in school and then started in university, Im fully pro breakfast! preferably with Lemon Water, 2 eggs and a tomato and cucumber salat :D

there are people who eat body build and eat all their calories in one meal or over a certain number of hours of the day. it's more about eating your calories and eat your fair share micro/macronutrients to stay healthy. However, for someone who doesn't workout or active, it's better to stick to eating their calories early as far from their bed to stay slim.

My breakfast is around 6pm i do omad intermittent fasting, wish that point had been explored as it has huge health benefits over 3 meals n snacking etc, actual proper ones :)

maybe this view of breakfast as the most important meal of the day is an English tradition passed down to its former colonies, because as far as I know in the southern Europe and Latin America breakfast is just a light meal to start the day, the least important, that can be skipped or substituted by a cup of coffee or bread, and the lunch is the main meal of the day, followed by the dinner.

I think that i should have AT LEAST 2 meals a day, and i think i could skip lunch if i have to.But , (please reply, )i think that some people who reply will disagree with me and say that you can skip dinner, because some people might not want to go to bed on a full stomach.

I feel better for having something to eat within an hour of waking up. Wholegrain oat porridge is the most sustaining breakfast for me. My son doesn't eat until lunch time because food in the morning makes him feel queasy. I think its probably a matter of your biochemistry.

I'm eating my main meal of the day when I have the time to cook properly and sit down and eat it slowly and mindfully. For the most part, in my case, that's in the evening when Im back from work. In the morning I don't have the time or the will to eat a big meal. I rather sleep half an hour longer than getting up earlier and eating while I'm not hungry yet. And for lunch, I prefer to have only a short break of half an hour to eat a small meal and walk around a few steps maybe, rather than take a long break around noon and having to work longer im the afternoon.

Some people just can't eat a large, heavy breakfast. It's too much on their stomachs. I can only handle tea and toast, the typical Continental breakfast.

Over the last few years i have been looking for the besy balance for a diet. What i have found is people are all differnent and have to adjust. Small meals all day can yrash you metabolism and you only need one well balanced meal a day with healthy drinks. You are probably throwing away enough money in food to eat better.

The only way to find if the meal is important is to see how you feel with or without it. I can’t survive w no breakfast but some people don’t feel like eating up till lunch. The not binge eating or overeating might be connected to the quality and nutritional value of food consumed rather than time of consumption. To me eating one or two tops healthy meals a day w healthy snacks and lots of water works best 🤷🏼‍♂️

But what about the fourth meal of the day? The one you eat before going to bed. In the Nordic countries this meal is very normal and I don't get why other countries don't eat anything before going to bed (And we also tend to eat dinner earlier, around 6 in the evening).
