Sellers of low end sports cards are freaked out because Burbank Sports Cards is now selling cards on EBay for 99 cents with free shipping. Some have gone so far to think this is going to crash the market and push most of us out of business. It's time to weigh in on my thoughts on this...

Burbank is able to sell 99 cent auctions because they do not pay listing fees. Ebay and Beckett Market Place do not charge Burbank Cards. This is well known in the hobby. Rob is not going to grind his business with 99 cent buy it nows across his platform. He's listing garbage. He's using stock photos. Another Post Office increase coming early next year will wipe out this low dollar loss leader. It's easy for his team when he has 15 warehouse guys pulling singles from a very defined inventory process/warehouse. Burbank is literally blowing out mass produced inventory. He's doing what I can't scale up do to limited space and time. I have 4 Million cards that would take me a lifetime to list by myself.

Ive pretty much pivoted away from selling any sports cards under $2 shipped mostly because I dont want to compete just to make 50 cents. Dabbling with numbered cards and auto cards around $3-$20 I find better as there floor is a bit more reasonable and companies like Burbank and ComC actually usually dont list at the bottom price for those.

Good service helps bring back customers to a small degree but having cards people want is the key. In this market if you are just selling cards collectors can get anywhere, then it's gonna be just a price war.

I think they're doing this to compete with COMC. You can rack up $0.35 cent cards and combine hundreds of them into a bulk shipping order for less than $0.01 per card.

It's simple. Before you list, make sure that no one else has it for lower than you will take. Burbank has an insane amount of cards that are just taking up space and they want the $$$ back. Even if they break even, they win, because it sometimes starves the competition out of existence which sometimes mean they are the only left one around when someone gets hot and they can charge a premium and move it out.

I think they are trying to get rid of some inventory. They may need some more space. After a while, they could run out of space in their warehouse. Just my thought. I usually buy from the the LCS or eBay for the low end cards.

I full heartedly agree with your perspective. It's all about providing value and good customer service. I buy more than I sell on Ebay and way too many "sellers" charge .25 or .50 per card to combine shipping just to make extra money. I will never buy again from a seller who does this. I understand if a bulk order actually makes the shipping cost go up and will gladly pay more for this but way too many sellers just don't care about creating customer loyalty. Good Video 👍

I remember seeing a listing that does this where the seller had the audacity to say something to the effect of "I don't like to make money off shipping." It's so weaselly.

I have all my variation listings ($.99 commons) as buy 5 or more get 60% off $.99 shipping plus $.30 each additional card. So on a 5 card sell Burbank is getting $4.95 while my sale is $4.17, so I’m cheaper. These are cards that I just need to get rid of that are only worth $.05-$.25. Additional shipping charge comes in handy for larger orders that need bubble mailer or box. I max it out at $4.89 shipping.

that's the problem with mass Consignment seller's they're selling other people's card's so they don't care how cheap it sells for because they get their percentage no matter what and the owner of the card eats it, I even know one company (Hoody's Collectibles) that if your card doesn't meet their $3 minimum sale price you end up owing them money!

I sell mainly low value singles and been competing with them for years. Their prices are pretty much impossible to beat. I do it where I can and don't when it simply makes no sense. I shudder to think about how much money I've lost over the years in trying to undercut their extremely low prices. Fortunately, after many years of making friends, developing relationships, and gaining repeat customers via fair prices and solid customer service, I'm able to sell enough to still make it worth my time.

People get very passionate about cross listing on other platforms. To the point they think everyone should. To many, it's a waste of time management for the result. Some passionate people think they're really doing something by listing on other platforms, sort of like sitting in rush hour vs going an alternate route to get home at the same time.

I don't think it's necessarily crashing the low-end market. eBay is a weird place where the lowest price doesn't always win. I've seen several situations where the most successful sellers for a particular set are not free shippers. Even if the 99c free shippers do win, they are likely opening hobby cases which means the pack hits may not cover the losses from the commons.

Then you have expenses I do not have, like your eBay store, a Card Dealer pro subscription, and any other subscriptions, you have, like Canva. "We got customer service," always loses in the end. Always. Price is just about all people care about. This is pure delusion. My mom ran a mom and pop audiology office. They all though that their customer service would make the difference. When Costco started selling hearing aids it was, "But we have better service." I'll never forget her telling the story of an old man who came in with tears in his eyes saying, "I love you guys so much and you have done so much for me. I hate to return these hearing aids but I have to in order to save money cause Costco has them cheaper. Pure doom if customer service is your strategy. The little this or that store? Bro, those places are evaporating. They exist in small towns but guess what? The internet ain't a small down.

Two points... 1) Burbank's massive inventory was and is a bigger threat to low-end card sellers. Not the price. 2) All of the fear mongers talking about Burbank is doing more harm than good. 99 percent of wannabe card sellers strategy. Undercut the other guys price. Genius. Now you all are losing money to sell on eBay. And Burbank amongst many other large card sellers are blowing out their inventories because the juice is gone. They are more then likely attempting to pivot. Problem with card shops is you rely on the sales of cards. But it’s been a race to the bottom with penny cards.
