Is buying a used subaru wrx sti or wrx a good idea or even worth it? I give my thoughts on buying a used wrx sti or wrx.

bought a 2019 sti with 91K miles for $20k. so far the only problems I've ran into is power steering rack needs to be replaced. Will replace the timing bet when it hits 100k miles. I'm running on hopes and dreams that it doesn't have any other major issues.

few tips for the used one. clean fax first (please don't cheap out on that) than you start to walk around the car look for damage/paint repair and panel gap, any mis-alignment could be a sign for major collision. once done that, check the oil when the car is COLD and sometimes you can tell if they put heavy oil in it. Any interior wear/rip that doesn't match the mileage of the car (roll back). check for modifications, when you spot alibaba/ebay part that's instant red flag. Also let the dear check for ECU flash and over-rev. I think the subaru form has some good source too.

I bought a 2019 sti with 31 thousand. It’s a one owner lease so I knew it wasn’t modded out. Im a mechanic by trade so my butt tells me a lot when I drive a car. Took it for a 1 hour test drive driving it normally and a little hard. Felt smooth and right. I’m 3 thousand miles in with no problems. This car is going to be modded out but extremely respectfully. So I bought one with a small damage spots in a few areas that I knew I could address and bring back to perfect when the time was right. Mod list. One piece drive shaft carbon fiber. Cylinder 4 cooling mod Rear sway bar and links Redline intake Cobb 91 stage1 plus. Spark plugs Air oil separator. Stis hold their value extremely well regardless I want this car to be done RIGHT. Don’t be afraid of wheel rash here and there. Little bumper scrap ( not a dent ) or a little touch up paint here or there. If you want it and everything feels right and it doesn’t throw Iv been modded by a 18 year old signs at you. It’s a good one to start your sti ownership journey in. I wish you all luck have fun negotiate walk away from a couple and buy from someone who makes you comfortable. I’ll walk away from any car where the seller makes me a bit uncomfortable. You only live once and sometimes being a car guy or passionate about them leads you to engine work or clutch jobs. It’s all apart of the process.

I bought my 21 STI used with 28k miles. Dealer told me straight up the car was modified previous owner blew it up and had to trade it. They replaced the block and some other components. The selling point for me is the car is a certified Subaru so it is covered until 100k. I don’t plan any modifications and I have just been happy to have my dream car. Also… watched a few other videos and I’m pretty sure we both live in the same area. The CVT WRX drive up sweeneysburg gave it away.

Yeah I don’t think I would have purchased it without the warranty. Poor car lived a rough life before me so I’m trying to treat it right. Yeah man there doesn’t seem to be many people on KZfaq from southern WV so I was stoked to see it!

I’d say only buy a used one privately. If someone mods then trades in the car and parts it out before they trade it and flash it back to stock tune but keep some mods on will cause problems. So stick to buying privately to be able to get a more in depth history of the vehicle in terms of mods and whatnot from the owner. Plus dealerships will mark them up huge
@spdkills83
@spdkills83 Жыл бұрын
I would agree and say the better used versions will be found in the private market. This is especially true if it is from an original owner. Dealerships can be a pita to deal with on most occasions with their jacked sales mentality these days also.

Some Reddit users reporting their stock 20’ and 21’ STI’s have had ringland failure. Makes me reluctant to buy one despite really wanting one.

I can fully understand the hesitation. Sadly the stigma and certain issues that surrounds these cars makes it difficult to pursue buying a used one. Wish I could sugar coat it and say every one of them would be fine. Sadly, that is not the case. Good luck to you 🤛

@@spdkills83 true that. I genuinely approach it now with the assumption that it’s been driven hard by the previous owner.

it's very important that how you drove the car. One very bad thing to do is lug the engine (high load with low rpm) and that's how the piston get cracked. the engine will sound like metal fan blade is touching the shroud. let go the gas immediately in that situation and downshift. The car is really not everyday friendly because it needs 1st gear to accelerate while other cars could take 2nd. So don't get lazy on the shifting give the rpm that engine needs. Of course, don't cruise you car 40mph in 3rd gear, you kill the motor and kill your pocket for gas. downshift when you need the power.
@PlatinumPeasant
@PlatinumPeasant Жыл бұрын
@@Align700nitro you can do all the things you recommended and still get ringland failure on an STI. That’s the crappy part about it.

Is a difficult situation to be in, I guess if you find the right one, like you said, take it to a mechanic or something. Used STIs are like pandora boxes, you might not know what you got until you crack it. So do your homework. I had a used 2010, 2015 and now the 2018 (altought the 18 I git it with 1200 miles) and never had issues.

Being able to tell if it had an AP on it is almost visibly impossible as they can umarry it and unplug it from the car with almost no trace. You could look for mount marks on the A pillar area, on the vent beside the A pillar, suction cup mount marks on widshiled (although that could be from several things). Other mounts can go low on the dash around the radio and such. Some say a dealer may be able to pull ECU mapping history and tell you if it had been flashed previously. That's a stretch, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I've personally never heard of dealer (local to me) ever being able to tell, but on the NASIOC forums in the past it was brought up that they could.

Its a 3500lb car with 240whp, its slow. It gets horrible gas mileage, any V8 powered car will annihilate it in fuel consumption. Most unreliable motors in history. The rod bearing clearances in every EJ are too tight, this causes them to spin bearings under sustained high RPM loads. You 100% should skip the turbocharged Subaru and buy a fast, reliable Vette, Camaro, Mustang, CTS-V, etc.
@spdkills83
@spdkills83 Жыл бұрын
Sadly cannot disagree with any of that. From a pure performance standpoint you are correct on all accounts. I’ve personally thought of LS swapping it down the road one day. And I would like to own a ZL1 1LE or even an the SS 1LE would do personally. I personally can’t lay off the dirt bike addiction to make room in the garage or have the extra cash to buy another car lol.

@@benjaminbotley depends what Subaru. The STI is actually horrible in the snow. The LSDs make it oversteer and understeer and 4 wheel drift anytime you even look at the gas pedal. The electronic nannies (TC, stability, etc) do not work because no variation in wheel speed on a totally snowy surface. WRX on the other hand is an absolute beast in the snow. But I dont drive any Subaru in the snow because road salt kills cars and mine are for life. Also the newer plebian cars like Forester and Crosstrek have pretty crummy AWD systems.
