When Donny Cates was announced as the new Thor writer, I was excited since he was my number one choice for the series. He achieved stardom with his great Venom run and has long exhibited a fondness for Thor. When he was announced, I called him “perfect” for the series. Now that we’re twenty eight issues in, it’s time to put that theory to the test. Did Cates meet my expectations? Did he struggle to lift the hammer? Is his his run worthy? I give my thoughts, praises, and critiques.

I feel like Thor overpowering Galactus was because of the power cosmic Thor was given, which added with Thor’s skyfather power and partial Odinforce would make him super powerful Not enough to justify embarrassing Galactus but still something

The fun thing is, if he had the full odin force back then as many assumed he had back then (or at least assume he was supposed to have it), him overpowering Galactus should be unconstestable for nearly everyone. Because vanilla Thor has always been portrayed as able to wound Galactus, skyfathers to be able to meaningfully contend with Galactus and so are on the same general power class (regardless of how one thinks skyfathers and Galactus rank within that same class), and Thor with the full Odinforce is usually shown to be at least one whole weight class above Odin in raw powers, so a full Odin force Thor with herald powers should by extension be capable of bodying Galactus 1 on 1 everytime they clash when they start at the same percentage of their power, so to speak. And if him allowing Galactus to turn him into a herald (would have to, for the just mentioned reason) also created a door way for Thor to be able to pull power cosmic from Galactus, then to me it would check out. Would is the keyword here. Even if that were true, it was still explained poorly, because I have to asume that Cates indeed meant to pull from the history of interactions between these characters, and if that were true then it would still be bad writing to assume most of the audience would be as familiar with said history. But we know that it either wasn't his true intentions from the start, or that he changed his mind and retroactively made it not the case when he revealed that Thor didn't yet posses the full Odiforce.

My most hated story of this was what they did to Donald Blake. I was expecting a redemption Arc. This guy found out he was solely created for Thor as a punishment/learning tool who was then thrown away by Odin while learning that everything around him is false. HE WENT LEGETIMENTLY INSANE; LIKE JOKER LEVEL INSANE!!! When he found out he called out to Thor for help for years all going unanswered; therefore setting up his mentality of being betrayed by Thor leading to his crusade to kill him. In the end all he got was LOKI'S PUNISHMENT for all of eternity after the first mistake/being a bad guy/waging a one man war on Asgard while Loki, after all the shit he did (most recent in my mind have DOOM EXPERIMENT ON THE ASGARDIANS TO SERVE VICTOR VON DOOM) is a welcome member of Asgard and Thor's friend. This is fucked up on how they did Blake because we know he is a genuinely good man.

Thor was only really “bullying” galactus when he absorbed that power from galactus and then brutalized him. The rock thing was definitely weird. But I don’t think it was meant to hurt. He just looked stunned. There was a future issue where we saw Thor fighting through getting impaled. And we have now seen what just base Thor can do when he completely let’s go and becomes unsympathetic and lacks empathy. Dude straight up tears Yggdrasil (which contains all of time and space) out of its roots. So the power scaling wasn’t horrendous on the higher end of things. Cosmic Thor obliterating galactus is more logical than moonknight somehow contending with Thor.

I mean Thor stole galactus cosmic power through his news powers, without that he couldn’t have defeated him but yeah I agree he was kinda overpowered all of a sudden. I’m expecting a lot from this for the end of the Thanos arc, Thor also is so cool, he looks so awesome in the first volumes and after too although a little less. But yeah the writing needs an extra effort like the Donald Blake arc was overwhelming and Thor didn’t do anything it’s like Cates has a huge potencial and passes right next to it without noticing.

Absolutely. When Thor and hulk both had "each others powers", Thor literally tears team Odin and Hulk's arm off and it is very clear that both Odin and Bruce know they can't win the fight, as they never thought they could hence their initial plan was to trick him into getting trapped by the world ash. Sure, it might not be a fully conscious Thor fighting a fully conscious Hulk/Banner, but they would never fight to a "definite answer" if they're both of sound mind (or whatever passes for that with whatever iteration of Hulk/Banner we are talking about). And also during their fight before Iron Man showed up, Hulk has aways been shown to be able to physically hurt base Thor, nothing new there, but Thor is still shown holding back and hardly taking a back seat to it. He is fighting sportmanly, not like "I will put you down" or anything. And the story pretty much says so too, as when Thor is Hulked out BRB explictly says "Hulk/Banner never fought Thor unleashed, just the avenger", which includes the fight just before too. Maybe the winner is not revealed in a satisfying way, but it is plenty clear.

I absolutely have love this run with Cates. I REALLY appreciate him dominating Hulk since he was brought in to be the person to be stronger than Hulk and be able to keep him in check. I wish Thor would stay this powerful, I'm loving it. To be fair, he is the son of Odin and Gaea, arguably the most powerful Elder god, and he had life breathed back into him by the Phoenix who gave him a portion of her power...he should be more powerful honestly.

As a Hulk fan, I did like Banner of War but did found it to be flawed in terms of plot. Tony trying to stop Hulk again despite Bruce and Tony making amends & The story not giving us a winner (although I expected that). However, I found it to be entertaining and I do like how it ends with Thor and Hulk having a new found respect. Donny Cates does regress Bruce’s character development a bit but does take him on a new adventure that has my attention

I have a question. Why doesn't the MCU unleash Thor's true potential? The DCU does it Superman which is why so Superman can defeat Thor. That's just not true. Thor gets thrown around too much in movies and it's almost opposite in the comics. What are your thoughts?
@mr.joedirt8583

Just look at the MCU. Those movies are pushing feminism and leftism. All straight white males are either goofy, incompetent, evil, or weak. All the women are stoic, confident, and capable. Most of the straight white male characters have been replaced.

Very good video. I took your word and moved from MCU Thor to Cates Thor. After that I was on cloud nine. Devourer king was pure hype, but now looking back it was mediocre at best. I think Jason Aaron is a better writer, his Thor issues came out frequently and for the first few years it was awesome. Hell I didn't even mind Thor giving Jane his name, the whole reason why Thor is the All-father now is because Aaron deconstructed him. Even his Thor's secret origin storyline was good. For me personally I think Aaron is better then Cates Cates is just so inconsistent, I like the relationship between Thor and Odin its a huge step up from Aaron's work with Odin. But other then that I think Aaron does everything else better. When Thor became the King of hel, Thor knowing how to do magic. Odin kneeling down to Thor, Thor stressing out about the war of realms. Thor entering warriors madness and strangling Bill. I know I'm pretty much alone in this, but I think Aaron's run was good but he did have some inconsistency's with the sun and Odin Thanks for making this video

A few come to mind. I tried to think of some that I thought would work for your channel’s style. Even though I mentioned some problems with them, Cates’ Devourer King and God of Hammers would be good for more recent adaptations. Ragnarok is really good and big in scale (Thor #80-85). Matt Fraction’s Mighty Thor #1-6 is an Asgardians vs Galactus story that’s decent. If you’re looking for a more obscure one, Kieron Gillen’s Siege Aftermath (Thor #611-614) is underrated. For individual comics, I might recommend Thor volume 3 #3 (Thor brings a reckoning to Iron Man for Civil War), the Last Stand of Skurge the Executioner (Thor #362), and Thor negotiating with the Kree (Infinity #4).

Before watching, just so I have a record of my uninfluenced opinion to later compare, I think it was serviceable. It had highs, but it also had quite a few problems. Sadly, it was mostly high flexes and... where is characterS really? Thor, honestly, nothing changed or happened to him. It is just the same over and over. Blake? My feelings of him as a separate being aside, he starts with potential, ends cliche ableism "so he went crazy, and violent and evil, how original uhuu". Loki? He is there, the few things he does are potentially interesting but also, went nowhere. Odin? Felt like he was gonna have a return to glory, nah, still an Aaron hand me down "just an abusive dead beat of a father, and also to add insult to injury, powerlevels definitelly not skyfather". Asgardians in general? Still just pop culture pg-13ish "vikings" but with superpowers. Sif, cool stands but... really it is just her with Heimdall's (comics and movie, sorta) role and powers and re-threading of the xena warrior princess tropes, but the version that shows up in hercules first to be exact. BRB? He exists, yes. Anything interesting about him happened outside cates' books, really. So yeah, some cool actions pieces, definitelly less idiotic than the predescessor, some interesting seed ideas but they go nowhere really, and I am not 15 anymore to be impressed just by power flexes and high ligthed action pieces, so just mildly entertaining to me.

Reading Al Ewing’s Venom and Donny Cates Thor, I much prefer the new venom run in how it sets up the overarching narrative and how it patiently set up everything for a great pay off that will likely lead to something very interesting. Venom takes its time, and it can be slow here and there, but the big reveal as for what the main point of the story is has now fully hooked me in and appreciate everything up to that point. There is a clear focus here without setting up a ton of different sub plots. However, with Thor now, it tries to set up all of these different stories that have potential to be great, but not fully realize that potential and ends arcs very quickly. The overarching plot with Thanos is also barely focused upon or teased, with it only now being expanded upon.
