i have a grudge against this movie because it was the last big event of 2019, then covid happened. I think this movie was so bad the world tried to end itself and because of that I couldn't watch any live musical theater.

In defense of the CGI in the movie. They didn't have the actors wear suits for species effects. They just had them wear brown bodysuits. So the animators had to hand animate everything. They also were severely underpaid and overworked. It's not the animators' fault really. The creators of the movie just got what they paid for.

I feel like the girl who was crying next to him in the theater was crying tears of pain and disgust over the trailer, not crying bc she was excited for Cats the movie

I know no one cares, but they REALLY did Mr. Mistoffelees wrong. They completely changed his personality. In the stage musical, he is confident and a big statement, but not arrogant like some of the others. He's fun, mysterious, and uplifting. They COMPLETELY SUCKED the life out of him in this movie and made him look like a shy, nervous little mouse who needs to build up his confidence. In the play he just is depicted as quiet because his magic and spectacle speak for themselves, but he's not like... such a weenie? idk

They hired a lot of professional dancers in this movie. My favorites are the twin cats which are well known French dancers they go by the name of Les Twins. They are the cats with the white shoes on and long chains on.

If one watches the '98 production, which was an adaptation of the original but cut down by roughly to allow it to fit on VHS tape, there is a story being told with a plot, but it is not a narrative. Rather it is the story you receive when sitting down as guest at a family gathering. The cats are all singing about one another, with few exceptions, and they are all interacting with one another. This includes Grizabella, who as the outcast is trying to be welcomed back, and McCavity who is seeking to cause disruption and havoc for his own purposes, which he never elaborates. Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks, Gus (real name Asparagus), Bustoffer Jones, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer all sing their own songs because they are imparting personal information. But even then Bustoffer Jones shares his sing with Jellyorum and Jennyanydots, Rum Tum Tugger shares a bit with Bombalurina and the chorus, Skimbleshanks shares with the chorus, and Mungojerrie and Rumbleteazer singing their song together and being mutually supportive. These are all aspects that the movie missed, mainly the deep interpersonal interactions with one another. Beautiful ghosts undermines the dying Grizabella's arc from outcast to acceptance, and the absence of Demeter for Bombalurina to protect turns her song from a warning of his dangers as a criminal into a celebration of his wickedness. The movie also managed to butcher nearly every song. Munkustrap is recommending Jennyanydots for consideration as the one to go to the heavyside lair and is supported by Jellyorum, Demeter, and Bombalurina. Jennyanydots barely sings any of her song beyond a small number of lines. Bustoffer Jones is not eating from garbage cans but is being given scraps by the upper end establishments, and he is proud of his size, not embarrassed by it, and Jennyanydots seems to be especially overwhelmed by his attentions. And Mistoffelees song is butchered by 1) having him sing it, which was actually changed shortly after the premier of the musical in London, and 2) by endlessly starting and stopping the song as he tries to bring her back. For nearly 40 years, Rum Tum Tugger has been the one to both recommend Mistoffelees and sing his song, building his confidence and providing him with approval whenever Mistoffelees checks with him for reassurance. The magic works perfectly the first time, and it is Rum Tum Tugger who informs Deuteronomy who it was that rescued him. The fight scene is also wrong because it is supposed to follow after Demeter reveals that McCavity has attempted to supplant Deuteronomy. This movie cut the most important element of the musical, which is the story of the cats gathering for this one night of magic and their love and interaction with one another.

They're moving like they would on broadway and its disturbing to see that kind of movement in a movie and not on a stage

I actually enjoyed watching Cats 2019. It was a hilarious movie to watch and it was made even better by the fact that the theater only had like... 10 people in it and 3 of them left halfway through. Me and my friend went and watched it purely to make fun of it. It's a memorable movie for me.
