I woke up to the tragic drawbacks of our debt-based financial system during the last financial crash. Through discipline, determination and Abby Joseph Cohen my financial advisor, I was able to retire recently in my early '50s with a bit of land in the Williamson act on the California coast and an investment portfolio that can sustain my daily living. I try to spread the word and encourage many people I meet it is possible to achieve the goal of independence. Living below your means can be enormously rewarding! Practice humility and above all, Invest in the financial markets with expert guidance.

I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Abby Joseph Cohen. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, she was able to scale this quickly to $150,000.

LOL! Hey George-Rachel's seemingly too light and casual (possibly wimpy sounding) delivery for the "Declaration" portion of your show is what actually works when dealing with a group of female friends & relatives you don't want to p-ss off :-) They will be more likey to get on board than get angry.

Oow! Pick me! I have a comment on the "allowance". It absolutely can't be called that ...by the bread winner but as a stay at home mama who was not helping our financial situation we went on a 3 year journey to stop being Dave Ramsey" ish" we met with a local Ramsey coach who expressed that how we talk to each other about money was our issue and boy was it and our motives (spender and saver, completely opposite personalities). I found Rachel and read every book and consumed everything you put out and it changed my mindset! I had listened to Dave but he was "mean" to me 🤣 Now I get it. Now we're a team. Now we're millionaires and I'm part of the solution and not the problem. So we call it an allowance for a lack of better terms but I don't care anymore! Perspective! Thanks For helping me guys! I never miss an episode!

The story behind the star spangled banner is absolutely awe-inspiring, beautiful and heart wrenching. If you don't know it, look it up (George not knowing about the ramparts made me think of this). Also, understanding its history just elucidates how far gone our education system is, when people kneel during it in the name of oppression/repression. The act screams profound idiocy and historical illiteracy. God bless the USA, good episode ya'll.

My parents co-signed for both me and my sister when we were buying our homes. We both opted to buy larger homes and rent out the extra rooms as opposed to trying to buy the cheapest and smallest homes in our expense markets and slowly work our way up. My sister and I also both put about 75K of our own money into our home purchases. MY sister and I also had and continue to have great credit scores. Sometimes a good business plan just requires some vote of confidence from family when it’s earned in the form of co-signing. I do think co-signing for a car or other depreciating asset is a bad idea.

For the dinner situation, I’ve had a similar experience. Not with family, but with friends. I don’t drink, so my bill is usually much lower than most in the group if you itemize per person. With most of my friends, we just take turns paying, but if I’m in a larger group and close with everyone, I have a few strategies. If I’m close with the group, I just tell them I’ll pay for what I’m having because I budget. But that’s because I’m close with them. For those I’m not as close with or if it’s awkward, sometimes I’ll excuse myself early before the check comes (right after we eat) with an excuse and just say, “Here, this should cover my amount with a tip.” Or, if I’ve eaten with them before, I’ll have an excuse prepared and say to the group “I’ll probably have to leave early because of X, so I’ll need a separate check.” And then I’ll ask the server “Can you please bring my check with the food so I can pay right away?” Unfortunately, it does mean I leave these dinners early, but I don’t mind getting out a little early and not lingering.

I lost over $70k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. Taxation without Representation, A thought here. How can the government tax people receiving income that are working and under the legal voting age? You would think that this would be a no brainier. How do We the People allow this? Our founding fathers did not, so why do our teenage children? Someone in power needs to address this injustice. I can not be the only one to point out the hypocrisy.

I had the privilege of singing the National Anthem several times for baseball games. I was with a group. We did it twice at Three Rivers Stadium and twice at PNC Park (I think - it was awhile ago), and once for a Scrappers minor league game in Youngstown, OH. So a story of the experience of singing at Three Rivers, for those who are interested: We went to audition in February (a snippet of our audition was on the evening news - our five seconds of fame, lol). The sound setup there was a nightmare - worst singing experiences I've ever had. They had two microphones that four of us shared. Those microphones had literally ONE sweet spot: right at the center and within a few inches. If you moved away from that spot, your voice cut out completely, so picture four of us on two microphones trying to make this work. In addition, the sound came out of the speakers a FULL SECOND LATER! This messed with several people who were auditioning. They sang slower and slower, like they were waiting for the sound to catch up! Thankfully, when they built PNC park, they didn't use that sound system anymore!

I support paying taxes for public services such as roads, bridges, parks, libraries, police, fire departments, etc…but I draw the line at public schools. I owned a house for 20 years and discovered 65% of our property tax went to the school district. I don’t have children and, at age 63, will never have any. And some of my neighbors home-school their kids. Why should we pay for a service we will surely never use (and have no say so as to what they do) when that money could be used to pay off our mortgage?

I agree with Rachel about property tax. As long as you own it you have no option to pay or it will turn into debt. It could be bare land that no one lives on, but it's still due. I feel it produces the same slave mentality as debt. It's different than income tax, utilities and other bills. You do have the option to cancel it or if you don't earn income there isn't a tax due for just being alive.

Love you George but have to disagree with you on this one. If I can charge you on a RECURRING basis, that's not a tax, that's a lease. If the government can ultimately take my property for failure to pay property taxes. I don't own it. The government does.

You have to take into consideration that some parents spend their money helping adult children because they re concerned about the welfare of grandchildren. I have a coworker that has had adult kids with their children in and out of their home. When they all finally got out, she continued working. I asked her why and she said she would work four jobs to keep having someone move back home. Also, numerous people are raising grandchildren because of addictions and poor work ethic. A lot of people in our society never got past minimum wage jobs which they would need to work three minimum wage jobs full time to be able to afford a very basic life.

I did not know this eagle thing! I'd love links and another episode on great symbols of financial freedom. (Actual symbols/emblems, not like paid for mortgage). I thought Martina McBride's most well-known was He Loves Me (Just the Way that I Am).

Mel Gibson's movie is about the southern campaign. Northern campaigns were Brandywine, PA, Lexington and Concord, MA CHALLENGE - Can you name a southern battle?

The best line for a person that asks you to co-sign for a loan is I don’t believe in debt and I don’t want to put you in a bad situation by co-signing for a loan that way you get to say no for the best interest of the person trying to borrow money.

1700’s are pretty relevant but it can be tough when studying ancient history to draw parallels to today

Long time listener, first time commenter, but Rachel 😭😭 love the enthusiasm, but Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day 😅 it’s September 16th. There’s a lot of history there though so it is a common misconception so I don’t blame you at all hehe much love 🤍🤍

Mexico's independence day is September 16th, not 5 de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo honors the 1862 Battle of Puebla.

What if the wife blows every penny that enters her hand? What if she is running the family into debt? What if counseling failed? Still against an allowance for the wife? Actually, they're getting a divorce now. Be careful what u criticize and make fun of...
