Common Pokemon I've seen mentioned: Mega Rayquaza: No boosting ability, weaker than Chi-yu. Dragon Ascent (120BP) is pretty strong but weaker than Chi-yu's Overheat Mega Medicham: Can't hold an item, weaker than Chi-yu, but only barely. Mega Medicham High Jump Kick is barely weaker than Chi-yu Overheat Medicham: CAN hold an item, barely stronger than Chi-yu. Medicham Choice Banded High Jump Kick is barely stronger than Chi-yu Overheat Chien-Pao: Lower Attack (120) than Chi-yu has special attack (135), also weaker attacks Darmanitan-Galar: Has the boosting ability and access to choice band... but icicle crash is really weak :( Bidoof: I forgot this one, it is stronger than Chi-yu. Please forgive this error.

The common thread I have seen with the most recent broken pokemon, mainly referencing Zacian, is that self boosting abilities that provide an offensive advantages are broken. Zacian had stupidly high speed with the extra boost to attack. This fish just gets to have the highest spatk stat. On gen3 we had Slaking which had an ability that nerfed him because of the high stats. Now the high stat mons are buffing themselves further.

I'M FROM THE FUTURE! In Gen 18, Groudon holds a niche in ZU as a bulky sun setter, after being replaced in PU by Kamisakana. Kamisakana ability is World's End, that sets up the new global warming weather effect, that instantly KOs Ice types with BSTs lower than 500, and maximizes the attacking stats of all fire types on the field, this is of course balanced by the fact that Kamisakana has 10 in both it's defenses to balance the 255 in its other stats.

I find it hilarious that Chi-Yu is the most devastating offensive threat in OU despite being the least intimidating looking out of the four ruinous mons.

Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham are in the same vein as the mentioned Mega Pokemon, in that they are stronger raw stats-wise, but they're locked to their Mega Stones in the first place.

A 100 base speed tier makes it strong but not unplayable like Zacian was. A lot of Pokemon can outspeed Chi-Yu if it isn’t using a scarf, and then revenge kill it pretty easily. Still an amazing Pokemon regardless, and probably one of the best overall mons from this generation.

Today when I played in OU I saw something I dread every time I close my eyes. Someone had brought Chi-Yu. I started sweating as I sat down and gazed over at the Chi-Yu with highly likely a choice item. He had already reinforced his Chi-Yu with sun and was in the process of finding a way to switch it in. I start shaking. I keep telling myself I'm going to be alright and that there's nothing to worry about. He somehow finds a fucking way to switch it in. Tears are running down my cheeks as I send my last texts to my family saying I love them. The Chi-Yu is now there, staring, and starts spamming Flamethrower. The eyes on his Chi-Yu flare to life like a nuclear flash, and rage fills my heart and shakes my very soul. My entire team goes down. My desk begins to shake as I rage. In mere seconds my world has gone from vibrant life, to a dark, earth shattering void where my body is getting torn apart by a Chi-Yu. As my body finally surrenders, I weep, as my ELO go under. I'm surprised there was no mention of mega mawile or mega medicham. They are certainly less viable than chi-yu but with huge power and pure power their attack stats are functionally over 200 base. If I'm not mistaken mega mawile's attack stat is so high that it literally cannot be matched by pure base stats, because they max out at either 254 or 255.

the fact chi-yu can compete with kyogre or miraidon is mind blowing when you realize rain or electric terrain are already taken in considerarion for those two, but chi-yu wasn't under sun which means its moves can potentially be boosted even further. that mon truly is a beast

Hello I'm from 2024. Currently in Gen 10 Mega Rayquaza is viable in PU as a niche pick to counter primal Groudon and Kyogre. The Current OU is run by Lashaqabaca and Peepobpeep who have quad typing with wonderguard and 1hit KO moves in blabloomp and Balalala that are guaranteed to hit regardless of evasion/defense after tailwind.

Chi Yu had 145 base spA on launch, only mon ever nerfed like that

A thing with Dracovish outspeeding is that for many targets, the ones that can outspeed it are usually on the frailer side and will go down to an unboosted Fishious Rend regardless. It's probably even more dangerous in doubles because Beads of Ruin boosts its teammate's attacks as well, which helps popular spread moves like Expanding Force, Electroweb, Heat Wave, Icy Wind and so on. Regieleki is a stupidly fast transfer Pokémon that's not part of the restricted list that gains even more powerful special attacks when Chi-Yu is on its side, having Tera Ice to punch through resists and Electroweb to help set-up a one-two punch with Chi-Yu. 180 HP / 252 SpA / 76 Spe Timid Eleki outspeeds Scarf Garchomp and is too bulky to be oneshot by most Choice Scarf Pokémon, while also free to hold any item it wants. A boosting item is the most consistent, but you can run Lum Berry to negate Prankster sleep move, Covert Cloak to blank Fake Out or even a Choice Scarf vs Scarf Miraidon (after Chi-Yu's Beads Tera Ice Blast is an OHKO). If you want a cleaner answer vs Dragons such as the Box Legendaries, you can run Iron Bundle as your other restricted mon which does not need Terastalization to beat them. In fact, it doesn't even need a Choice Scarf vs a Scarf Miraidon because the terrain boosts its speed!

Obviously Chi-Yu is strong, but the math to get 492 is inaccurate. You aren't boosting your own sp attack, you're reducing other pokemons' sp defense, which is entirely different math. If their sp def is lower, that ability has less of an effect, and if it's higher it has more of an effect. It's hard to say if an equal sp def of 369 being reduced by Chi-Yu's ability would even equate to a sp attack stat of 492. It's worth mentioning I think.

Purely off numbers: make shuckle switch its attack and switch a focus band onto it. It’s probably possible to consistently do it in doubles, but it would probably render at least one of your own Pokémon more or less useless

The thing with Chi yu is that you an reduce and increase stats, unlike boosted Pokémon that get their power from their Stat raise, meaning a chi ju can have +6 spAtk on top of beads, while porygon or zacian can't, but that's not to be expected. However, the guts scenario isn't that unlike: very often you'll have someone with toxic, or t spikes or will o wisp, and you can predict said switches on ghosts to get burn and earthquake chandelure or chi yu to hell, or Mach punch or bullet

Good to know that my favorite pokemon of this generation is _an absolute god._

I’ve been using chi-yu to great effect in the ace tournament with an amulet count. Spamming dark pulse always guarantees the knock out. Only Dendra’s hariyama, and penny’s umbreon and sylveon give it trouble and even then there both 2 hit ko

I think Gorilla Tactics Darmanitan Galar is stronger, but you are always choice locked.

I would argue that like all the other major threats, mainly Iron Valiant and the weird cat weasel one, you can always catch them off guard and hit 'em where they least plan on it. That's why my scarf Garchomp has Tera Steel and iron head. They see the switch in with super effective damage, and eat the cranium instead

This is the first generation where it wasn't a power creep it was a power jump. I think the ruin pokemon and certain paradox pokemon would be at home in ubers, but I don't know if they'll find their way there since we're just using other gen 9 pokemon to counter them, and pushed 70% of older pokemon out of OU.

How does Chi-Yu compare to Last Respects on Swift Swim Basculegeon or Sand Rush Houndstone? Your own Pokémon fainting happens pretty reliably, and you can set up a Drizzle or Sand Stream user right before switching into them.

Xerneas, for exemple seems like a much more appropriate candidate than Rampardos, with comparable spatk stat and boosting ability, but with added bulk and one of the most dangerous setup moves in the game in geomancy. Good old choice locked Kyogre too with better stab in Water Spout, coverage, bulk and team support capabilities. Plus, Chi-yu's ability being versatile is kinda pointless because it is known to spam stabs anyway... But still incredibly strong by the OU standards !

if you count glitches, in gen 3 thanks to the pomeg glitch, minimum HP max special attack kyogre holding mystic water using Water Spout with 65535 HP is the strongest no set up move in the series

Tbh I think there is one thing that should also be noted, this stat drop also helps your allies, just having Chi-Yu on your side of the field effectively boosts your ally's SpAtk by 1.33x aswell, for example Regidrago which has 100 SpAtk has the same effective Dmg output (though with +SpAtk Nature unlike ChiYu) when using a Dragon type move as Chi-Yu but having both out means Regidrago now effectively has an insane 656 SpAtk before accounting for items but with the downside that your ally Pokemon also takes 1.33x more dmg. I think this is an even more potent boon of Beads of Ruin, being able to not only buff itself but its allies always.

chi yu will absolutely annihilate zu in gen 25 though

im running bulky koraidon with heat rock on ubers alongside chi yu, its quite despite chi yu himself getting outshined by koraidon and flutter mane on that tier

I think rather than stating if Chi-Yu is the strongest Pokemon, it's better to state that Chi-Yu is the strongest Pokemon unconditionally. Like you stated, something like Banded Guts Conkeldurr or Banded Fishious Rend Dracovish can be stronger, but the scenarios where that's happening are too inconsistent to really rely on. And in that regard, I'd say that Miraidon is overall stronger. Electric is a really good offensive type, and many of the Pokemon who can somewhat reliably take Electro Drift probably don't want to be eating a Draco Meteor.

I think you missed 2 mons: Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile due to huge power/Pure energy. The latter has an effective 259 attack stat. Still, Chi-Yu has an effective 319 Special attack with specs, even surpassing Medicham's High Jump Kick with Fire Blast despite the lower base power, although barely. The strongest reliable special attack is still an specs water sprout from a modest Kyogre.
