Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Soren, your knowledge of Hip Hop and its various distinctions per region is amazing. This is a very good subject and question that you have presented. Growing up on the west side of Chicago in the seventies and eighties (I was born in ‘73), I’ve always leaned towards what a lot of people consider the foundation(s) of Hip Hop. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed some “gangsta” and some “street” centric Hip Hop (Ice Cube, King Tee, M.O.P., Mobb Deep, etc.), but you had to be an EMCEE.

Great breakdown, was just looking into Chicago gang culture and how it’s influenced the modern hip hop scene there. I agree with your take on the lack of regional access from major labels based in just New York and Cali, and the way Twista and Common defined two completely different sides of hip hop at the same time causing that split in style. However I don’t necessarily think this is a detriment to the cities culture. I think a good metaphor for it is kind of looking at it like this, Pizza (New Gangsta Hip Hop) been around since the 1700’s, but New York style pizza (Twista) has only been around since 1905, but a lot of other places adopted this style because of it’s success and more diverse flavors, however whenever Chicago came out with deep dish pizza (Chief Keef) in 1943, you recognize it’s a complete new thing and although everyone wants to cash in on it, it doesn’t really feel the same outside the Windy City. Idk if that’s an even remotely comparable way of looking at it, but it was fun connecting the dots.

Honestly Kanye, Common, and Twista’s styles were so unique to most stuff out, the flow mostly, but even production and album covers have played massive roles overall. I mean the “chopper” flow is technically a Chicago originated thing, but it grew so quick that it just became a part of midwestern hip hop.

Great points, @Abstract_FWTX. Chicago artists are immensely talented. It's too bad more people don't appreciate them. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.

Part of the reason is because Chicago is in the middle of the map. I grew up an hour from Chicago in Northwest Indiana and I grew up listening to everything from everywhere. East, west, south, midwest all of it

Is Chicago’s Hip-Hop scene too diverse for its own good? Short answer- No…Hell No. The endless styles created by Chicago artists from the 80s til today is not and has never been a hindrance. Speaking as an artist from Chicagoland (Harvey World), that witnessed the movements from the Mid ‘90s thru through the mid 2010s to today, the only major hurdle for Chicago was label infrastructure-ie. marketing & distribution. A city can have all the talent in the world, which Chicago does, but unless there are labels (independent or major) to push the music the movement doesn’t move. The talent/creativity/music is like a tree and the business infrastructure is the soil. No matter how much potential that tree has, if there is no soil to facilitate growth that tree will become stagnant and die. Every region, every city that “blew up” had to create a thriving independent market. There’s no Texas movement without Southwest Distribution and other entrepreneurs. Same with LA, same with the Bay, same with New York and Atlanta. Incredible talent HAS to be matched with aggressive marketing and adequate distribution. In Chicago we always had the talent. We did not always have the access to infrastructure.

It was supposed to be like that for Chicago. First New York, then Hip Hop/Rap went Westcoast, then South, then went up to northern Midwest (Chicago). Chi represents the final frontier of hip hop. The middle and heart of America that also represents more of the real world than New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. That's why hip hop labels always preferred to stay away from the realest world (Chicago) and post up everywhere else except for Chi, hence other regions always been more commercial and market ready. The real world (Chi) always been a little too real for mainstream hip hop.
