What is all the damage that Christianity does for modern societies? Is there empirical evidence Christianity creates more violence, hatred, and mental health issues? What does the data actually conclude when it comes to this issue? Sources are referenced throughout the video. Thanks to Sociologist Kenneth Vaughan for helping make this video and to Sociologist George Yancey for reviewing it.

I'm Brazilian; in my opinion I would say the importance of religion in areas where murder rate is higher is because we live such a stressful life exposed to so many horrors that we look for justice and security beyond what we can find in the world: Imagine a family member went to buy bread and was killed by a mugger, would you really say "well, guess I will never see them again, and the murderer will be free forever."? I lived in Europe as well and I find that people with easier lives tend to be less religious (I believe) because of the lack of these emotional situations.

You are right. The need for justice forces a belief in an afterlife where such redress finally occurs. If only people would spend less time praying and more time working on social issues, the world would be better sooner.

Brilliant video! From my perspective as a British Christian who spends a lot of time online, it seems that Americans (both Christian and atheist) are oblivious to how different things are in the rest of the world. Sure, some things are universal, such as Christian doctrines and practices with deep roots in history, but the more uniquely American attitudes and beliefs are better explained by sociology than by religious doctrine (gun laws are a non issue here, despite their cultural significance in the US. We all need to be careful not to base our conclusions about religious matters on the politics and sociology of a small number of countries.

Interesting that in most western countries today - irrespective of their culture - the majority are fast getting ready to go on a full-out war against born-again Christians. We see this clearly with the move towards the ban on conversion therapy which is but a thin disguise of the intention to muzzle Christians. The countries all have pro-abortion laws and homosexual marriage already.

Why do you desire that a 2000 year old greek fan fiction about a dead arameic soeaking preacher who was executed as a rebel against rome has any relevance?
@caos1925
@caos1925 8 ай бұрын
hmm for a fan fiction it has a lot of accuracies, like common names of the time period, as proven by other writings from then, also attesting to that same preacher and gravesites, usually fan fictions are not so accurate. It would also be odd to go to your death for a fan fiction, as most of the writers of the new testament did. Sorry I don't know what you mean by a dead "arameic" "soeaking" preacher not sure what those two words in quotes are. Do you write some grammatically and linguistically bad fan fictions yourself? Already with this you prove the Bible is better than you. If it is only a fan fiction too, how do you know this preacher was executed as a rebel against Rome? You contradict yourself. Consider if the gospels are real though and not just fan fiction, then this man is much more than just a preacher, and you know it, troll. Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers.@@TorianTammas

With the correlation equals causation argument, I got into a similar argument where someone told me that Anime was the leading cause of transgenderism. I ask him simply: "If I went and made a study to see how football increased violent acts by interviewing prison inmates and asked them their hobbies, do you think I'd have more evidence for or against my case". They didn't want to answer because they knew what the answer woud be. I told him I'd never try to make the claim that Football caused more violent crimes because the claim is stupid. When you insist that a correlation is the causation of something, it doesn't make your claim seem more sound, it means you are willing to say deceitful things to attack something you dont like. It says little about the issue you're talking about and says so much more about you.

I’ll be completely honest, I was a pretty terrible person before becoming a Christian. I lied and cussed almost everyday, I stole from friends and family (I actually stole money from my father’s study once and I also used his credit card behind his back…more than once. I then tried lying to him about it afterwards and almost got away with it). I used to spread gossip and I knew these things were false but I didn’t care, I spread them anyway. I was very greedy too. I used to binge eat and I was very fat. I knew that I was being unhealthy but I didn’t care, I just wanted to enjoy myself. I did watch pornography a couple of times but not that much. I lusted pretty much everyday, I couldn’t stop, I enjoyed it too much. I used to go behind my friends and family’s backs and say some pretty nasty things about them. I did something else really awful that I will not mention. When I became a Christian, I stopped lying, I stopped cussing, I stopped stealing, I stopped gossiping, I lost weight, I stopped watching porn, I stopped lusting, I’ve got a healthier diet, I’m avoiding those who used to badly influence me, I stopped insulting people and so on. It’s made me better, I see the fruits of the Spirit inside me and I say that anyone who uses their Christian faith to look down on people or whatever it may be is not a Christian. Again I’ll be honest, when I was first introduced to Christianity, I used to use my faith to look down on people. I enjoyed being right and superior and wanted to make others seem smaller and inferior. I am a better person now that I’m a Christian. If you want an example of how Christianity can make you better, then I am a prime example. God still loved me despite my disgusting personality and died for me, and I’ve accepted His grace. And I think it’s about time that you did too.

The pope, the royal family, the whole lot of them have been ruling and reigning for hundreds and hundreds of years. But the Real Christ is going to return. It's a good day to truly get to know Him. For He is the image of the HEAVENLY Father. God is pure light, no darkness in Him. He is perfect Love/Agape, no fear found in Him, for perfect Love casts out all fear. His love is boundless, unmeasurable, unconditional and Divine. One must turn to Him with all your heart. For He seeks hearts and seeks for you to know Him. This can only be done by seeking Him. We do this through Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus is the only way to God. To know Him. Either way, if you do or you don't, God knows you. Knows everything you do before you even do it. Knew you before you were born, which suggests you were somewhere else and something else before being born into this flesh suit. He just waits for your heart, for your Love. Knock and the door will be opened and once you have turned back to where you come from and belong, He will never let you go. Even though you may go through difficulties, He will see you through them. He teaches us how to forgive, to forgive ourselves for making wrong choices and maybe doing yourself and or others harm. To sin is to miss the mark, to miss the point. When we keep making the same mistakes that harm ourselves or harm others and ourselves. He teaches us Forgiveness,which I believe is the highest aspect of love. Divine Love which is God. His spirit resides in us when we turn to Him. He then teaches us, we start to listen and hear Him. Turning away from the addictions and earthly nature of the flesh, which is to be appeased by the world and giving shirt lived pleasures, through addictions and selfish behaviour. He leads us to become selfless and serve others. To shine brightly in the world. This world truly can be heavenly or it can be hell on earth. Seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened. First we must open our hearts. When we do, with all our heart, then the river of life flows into our heart and we become truly born again without having to die. We become a new being and God's Spirit works His good works in us. I pray this brings some understanding to who Christ is and who God is. How the world is fooled today by lies. Tel lie vision being the main culprit. Lucifer is the prince of the power of the air, airwaves dear one. Turn of the indoctrinating TV and seek God. It may be the greatest achievement you ever make in this very short life we live here. Eternity is a very long long time. In fact past this earth, there is no time. Time is a man made conception and had been changed. The true time is told in the heaven's via the stars sun and moon. All ships navigated by the Heaven's. Look up your redemption draws nigh. I pray all do. Peace Love and Grace be upon us all ✨💛✨🌿🕊️ Absolutely nothing to do with Christ Jesus and His teachings.

Yes, churches build social structures that have positive effects in those that live in them, BECAUSE these were built by churches. Does HE have examples of social structures built on top of anything else than a religious institution that shares these positive effects? And assuming he does, is this effect consistent across ALL the social structures sampled, in the same way that structures with a religious basis do? Because as it currently stands, the evidence he expects you to provide is right in front of him, but it looks like he's choosing to ignore it.

Christianity itself is not harmful, but Christians certainly are because like the non-Christians, they too are sinners no better. The problem is the people, not the faith. The doctrine of total depravity makes people better because when you tell people they're inherently good, they become narcissists. When you tell people they're inherently evil, they always self-reflect and improve. You don't have to teach a kid to be bad, you have to teach them to fight against their bad nature. You don't have to teach humans to be evil, we already are. You have to force them to self-reflect on their evil nature, then they improve.

I might hesitate to support TOTAL depravity. While there is of course a danger from telling people they’re inherently good because it leads to a feeling that they don’t need to better themselves, there’s also a danger of telling people they are utterly evil in that they get pessimistic and think there’s no way to better themselves. Ultimately God created us humans “very good” but due to the Fall we are distorted by sin.

This is a great video! Some people who do not like Christianity don't usually go to scientific data to try to prove that Christianity is harmful, they look at sexual sin and financial scandals from Christian leaders or some bad effects from cults. Or they just use personal experience. They will also use historical events like the Manifest Destiny, Canadian Residential Schools, Relocation Camps for Japanese in Canada/US during WW2, the Holocaust, and the US Civil Rights movement to name a few. Some Christians fought against atrocities while others idly stood by silently. The best statistical analysis would be from God himself on Judgment Day. So we Christians must repent, believe in Jesus (Rom 10:9) and live with integrity.

The common error in these comparisons is lack of taking socio-economic levels (income and poverty) or perhaps to a lesser extent levels of unemployment into account. Pointing to the possibility of the reverse cause is quite interesting as well. There are also studies which look more at a personal level, which seem like a more direct way to make these types of comparisons. Ultimately, meta-analysis is the way to go.

The opposite (extrinsic religiosity), is the person who have a given hierachy of values (ex. Familly, Country, Health) and uses religion as a way to reach their already stabilished goal.

It's ironic how the bad things atheists point out about religious areas are directly contrary to the teachings of that religion. Take, for instance, the homicide example. You know, the very behavior that goes against one of the ten commandments. The terrible thing they point out is committed by individuals who act contrary to the teavhings of a religious person. The only logical conclusion you can come up with is that those specific individuals committing those crimes are either not religious or claim they're religious but don't actually take their religion seriously...or else they'd actually follow the beliefs of their religion.

The word "religion" is a complicated one. Considering the four points mentioned below, things like atheism, humanism, commerce, parenting, schooling, farming, Christianity, Hinduism, science, philosophy, transhumanism, sports, art, music, etc. are basically all religions--regardless of whether or not they include a god or mighty one or belief in the supernatural. 1. People have different views as to what exactly a religion is and what should be considered religion and what should not. 2. The use of the word religion has changed over time. 3. There are different definitions of the word religion even used today; some definitions are more inclusive, others are more exclusive. 4. If you go to the dictionary, you'll see that a belief system, a lifestyle, or whatever can basically be both a religion and non-religion at the same time partly, because the word religion is not generally agreed upon. Religion (in Oxford Languages): 1.the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. 1.1a particular system of faith and worship. 1.2a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.

That it is mostly evangelicals who beLIEve that the former president of the US is still the president or that the hard working people who counted votes are lying, does not make the expositions in this presionation, with gratuitous citations that are non sequiturs, very credible.

@Eric Bailey Bad things happen to people randomly. People are not perfect. To correlate someone's behavior to some incidental adverse occurrence is "superstitious" at best and stupid at worst. My mom died of old age without a car accident. She had a St Christopher medal in every vehicle she owned. What should one make of that ? A devout Christian friend's 18 month old grandson had a near SID event while she was babysitting him. The child is severely mentally challenged from that encounter. And is now a huge burden on the family in many ways. Is that a "noble blessing" ?? Preachers make a living reconciling "strange circumstances" with "the will of God". However this is really because of humanity's greatest attribute to making order out of chaos (which is why computers exist)...but when people can't make sense of the chaos...they just proselytize their "meaningful religion story" as an answer. It really is a mockery of intellect though, to create a fear or presupposition of harm, because of some comment related to a deity.

There is no essential dichotomous between ritual and intrinsic. Many of us Christians that attend ritually based traditions balk even at the hint that these two things cannot exist simultaneously. This is the problem with Protestantism and the continued reaction against “tradition”, the tradition of reacting to tradition which is a ritual in and of itself. There is no escape from ritual. A mode of thought is itself a ritual. We need more nuance and also more resolution when discussing ritual, tradition, intrinsic belief etc.
@abyssimus

While I do agree (and from personal experience) that extrinsic practices are very useful scaffolding for intrinsic faith to climb up while it grows, there is a point where one has to decide which has higher priority (either letting the intrinsic grow beyond the extrinsic, or else sealing the intrinsic up in a tower of the extrinsic). The New Testament is pretty much Jesus and then Paul arguing with extrinsically religious folks that intrinsic faith matters more, and letting them know that no amount of extrinsic ritual will build that intrinsic base if it's not already there.
@MrGustavier
@MrGustavier 2 жыл бұрын
Nice Job ! Great animations ! I liked the distinction between extrinsic vs intrinsic. But like you said, correlation doesn't mean causation. Within a religious group, some will be intrinsic, and some will be extrinsic, but maybe it is their personality that determines who will be which (maybe it is neuroticism that makes someone extrinsic). In that case, the real comparison shouldn't be intrinsic vs extrinsic, but compare people with the same personality traits across the religious line. If the causality goes the other way around, then doesn't that mean that religious people should strive to be more intrinsic and less extrinsic ? But doesn't that mean that religious people should stop proselytizing ? Stop reasoning in a tribal "us vs them" manner ?

I believe that in the case of Christianity, harmful Christians are like this because of external factors, such as the teachings and ideologies of bad parents, literalism and biblical misinterpretations, the ideology and society of the local area, and the fact that a large percentage of the population are meanies, for example i have seen atheists and theists be complete idiots. And vs what measure of scientific accomplishment ? Maybe it should be conceded now that the most Nobel Prizes go to followers of the Old Testament, right ? NO skeptics claim the best scientists are likely to be none religious, that is idiotic...first science is a process that is used for predicting physical behavior. The best SCIENCE is done by providing quantitative descriptions of events that can be used repetitively. I'll put it this way: 94% of all wars and major conflicts were secular, not religious. Only 6% of wars had anything to do with religion, and more than half that percentage was Islam. The only time Christianity was associated with violence was when Christians were persecuted by atheists, pagans, Muslims & Jews, so other people (usually non-Christian) get upset at the injustice and fight to defend the Christians. But that's rare. Either that or non-Christian forces will infiltrate the church and inflict harm against society, so it appears as if there's Christians doing it. The least corrupt countries on the map have a Christian heritage. Usually when there is corruption in a Christian society, it's because non-Christians are attacking that society. Or because corruption scares the people there into Christianity, so there's a correlation. There's also the definition of "crime." Statists commit a lot of crimes, but they change the definition of crime so they appear innocent, and they entrap others into crimes. So you can go to a secular communist country and say "there's less crime" but it's only because the state covers it's crimes or changes the definition of crime. Secular statists will murder and steal but say it's not a crime, then cause others to have to murder and steal. Upwards of 250 million people were killed by atheists in the 20th century, which is more than all people who've ever died at war combined. So if we're talking about appearances then you can say Christianity is harmful, but if we're talking about reality, it's the opposite. It's obvious, we all know it. Christians don't rape, murder, kidnap & turn people into zombies, they made pretty much every ethical advancement in history from the abolition of slavery to almost every human rights movement. When non-Christians make "ethical" advancements, it's usually a front for something corrupt or a money scheme. The reason atheists are underrepresented in prison and religious people are overrepresented in prison is because atheists imprison religious people, and because prisoners tend to become religious, particularly through proselytization. Christians are sheep, others are wolves. How did we get slavery in modern society? Because Chinese atheists combined with western communists to weaponize atheists & pagans against Christianity, now everything is corrupt. That's the scientific truth.

@@codygillard I mean… no matter how much the modern view distorts the crusades, they are undeniably violence associated with Christianity, which was my only assertion. I’m not exactly in a position to pass moral judgement on the crusades; it’s not a subject to which I have exposure sufficient enough to offer an informed historical opinion.

THE "FRUIT" OF THE DOCTRINE OF ETERNAL TORMENT 1. Many see it as evil and do not want to worship a God that advocates such things. It causes people to reject Jesus Christ and instead become atheists. 2. It desensitizes a person to such an evil teaching and shows a no mercy attitude. 3. Only a selfish heart can be content in their personal salvation, when people are burning and suffering for all of eternity. 4. This teaching gives people a perverted sense of love and justice. 5. The thirst for revenge. 6. They love God out of fear, instead of genuine love. 7. It causes anger and tension amongst people because they think, chances are, they're going to hell. 8. It promotes violence and unforgiveness. 9. It breeds self-righteous Christians. 10. Has been known to cause mental health issues and in many instances to become severe and even suicidal tendencies.

A very well done and comprehensive video. You continue to make very good points in defense of Christianity. Your research won't be in any way, shape or form, and it is clear you have worked very hard on this video(as you have in so many other videos as well). Rest easy after your work. God bless!

*"It's the social structures and good people that decrease crime. Not the religion itself."* That doesn't make any sense. Those social structures are built upon the beliefs of the religion in the first place. If the believes were inherently dangerous, than the environment would reflect that. This is why Churches with doctrine ranging from poor at best to alt-right at worst are always the toxic Churches that everyone fears. Because they push homophobia, ableism, sexism, racism, perpetual McCarthyism, misinformation, conspiracy theories, and the heavily politicized culture war narrative as essential doctrine. No social structure can properly function without a good belief system serving as its foundation. This is why its those types of Churches that always have toxic social structures that are built upon an imbalance of power that consistently end in scandals one after another. There's a reason why it's always the Churches founded upon sound doctrine that actually thrive and do real good for the community.

I object to the using of the term "Atheists" in that general way. Most atheists don't care about religion (that's why they are atheist). Certainly there are some "Atheists" who argue agsainst all "Theists". But most of the time I think its some of the one kind argue aginst some of the other kind. E.g. most atheist channels I'm viewing are arguing agains fundamentalist or literal interpretations of the bibel; not actually against the "be kind to one another" part of Christianity. At least in my community it's about being convincing by behaviour, not: be of my kind of belief or get your head bashed.

32:51 I facepalmed when I saw this list. Reproductive rights is just a euphemism for abortion which I view as just a subset of homicide, and same with death with dignity which is just assisted suicide. I would probably have similar gripes with the other statements as IP points out later in the video but if you are arguing that these 2 things are good you have lost me entirely and I would say that this list in general even if it was 100% accurate is more reason to think that secular people are less moral.

"While the rest of the world was busy constructing and developing civilization through all its trials and tribulations along come atheist convinced they can take credit for it all". When atheist make claims like how religion is the cause of all the ills of the world it's easy to not take them seriously considering how very little, if anything, atheist and atheism has contributed to the improvement of society. Atheist almost pathologically deny any correlation between communist authoritarianism and atheism despite the fact that regimes like North Korea and China make atheism practically a state religion if not a requirement for political success in any event. One goal of communism is to replace the moral authority of God with the moral authority of the state and we all know how that works in China and North Korea. China currently has the fastest growing Christian population in the world by adult conversion and projected to be the largest Christian demographic in the world by 2030. This statistic lends credibility to a desire for "intrinsic religiosity" which may then extend to culture and societal improvements. After all, why embrace Christianity if atheist China is such a model of societal perfection? This is once again a masterpiece of clarity and by IP. But I'm a simple man. When an atheist tells me how evil Christianity and religion is, I'll just consider that atheist an example of having an under-evolved sense of reality. Peace and God Bless

The start of European Atheism, was in 1755 in Lisbon (Portugal) on All Saints Day. 98% of the population was in churches praying. Then the earthquake struck, and the stone churches came tumbling down and killed everyone in the churches. Those who weren't in churches, got killed by the tsunami 15 minutes later. Just thought you'd like to know.
