Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) star in Netflix's Bridgerton season 3, following in the footsteps of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
In this video, I discuss and compare the differences in major relationship milestones for Colin and Penelope's love story in the book "Romancing Mister Bridgerton" and season 3 of the Netflix series: their meet-cute, "I would never marry Penelope," first kiss, hand cut, and carriage scene.

I didn't particularly enjoy that part either, but I can kind of imagine why the author went about him in that way - he was built up to an impossible standard and put on a pedestal in Penelope's mind. She didn't know the real him, because he was wearing a veneer of jovial politeness, easygoing attitude and charming smile. But he's a real human (within that fictional world) and had to be exposed for the flaws and insecurities he had, so we can see him overcoming them for her sake. If he was perfect, like Penelope imagined him to be, then it wouldn't be realistic that he wouldn't have fallen in love with her years ago, since she hadn't changed that much. Him having a temper (which surprised himself even) was a shock to the system and allowed Penelope to stand up for herself and show her true colours as a confident dignified woman, who took pride in her life's work and who had the right to defend it (with some help from lady Danbury as to the confidence boost). They both had to prove/showcase they were deserving of eachother, otherwise the coupling wouldn't have been believable with all the prior information we had about the characters. And obviously some drama was necessary to raise the stakes, so we can arrive at the culmination of "I-love-yous" and whatnot.

"A kiss is for two people" is my favorite line from the book, hands down. It sets Colin apart from his rake brothers and shows that he appreciates Pen's full participation from Pen

The show is better purely for the reason that I can accept this behaviour from a 22 year old man but never from a 33(?) year old man like he is in the book. Also, people do not realise that he did no amount of grovelling in the books, just a lot of huffing and puffing. Though I’m only halfway through the books, they got together with no amount of yearning from that man. At least we got one episode and a half episodes of that from the show and it was in subtle ways that not a lot of people realise (maybe that could mean that it was too subtle?)

Also, didn’t like how Colin always knew Penelope had feelings for him in the book, because it truly doesn’t make sense to me, especially with how much longer their friendship lasted in the book. You telling me you always knew your friend held romantic feelings for you but never questioned your own feelings for her? And if you had questioned it before and the previous conclusion before the kiss was you didn’t have feelings for her, what changed your mind now? I don’t know, that part of the book bothers me so much, because it’s either he’s a jerk who’s stringing her along until he’s ready to settle down or bad writing on the part of Julia. At least in the show, he didn’t question his feelings for her because he had no reason to because he didn’t know about Pen’s feelings, and the kiss makes him realise he’s always had feelings for her because it makes him start questioning his feelings for her. Might show Colin actually be a clueless demisexual?

The book yearning for Pen or his realization is also like. THREE DAYS max irc. Versus the WEEKS it is in the show, which feels sooo much better? for a friends to lovers trope where all the angst and anxiety of it is earnt from the tension of yearning and worrying about your friendship or messing it up. Its CRAZY that they just. yeah??

Agree that some of the book scenes are better than in the show. It seems like the book gave Penelope more dignity, which would have been nice to see in the show. Especially love how Book Penelope handled the "I will never marry Penelope Featherington" scene.

Luke newton bringing up the books in almost every interview is spectacular to me because he really cares about his character and the source material. And I can see those subtle book nods he adds with his character even if it just his eyes and facial expressions. I also love when the rest of the cast brings up the books as well. It is nice seeing how important these characters are to them. I do agree with you. The journals are better in the book than in the show. They were actually about his travels and quinn did not try to make him look like a rake.

Oh, you just made me realize something the show picked up from the books-subtly, quietly: Penelope never does tell anyone she wants Colin to ask her to marry him. The audience can clock it right away, and Marina confronts/accuses Pen of feeling it. But show Pen never utters a word about it to anyone. The closest she comes is to Colin himself at the end of S1, but she “forgets” what she was going to tell him

I like the show better. I like that they didn’t wait so long,I like their lighthearted relationship and joking around and gossiping. it seems like he is more aggressive and outraged in the book for kinda stupid reasons. I like how in the show he is more emotional and sensitive like highly empathetic people in the world how they try to live their life for others and doesn’t take time to notice themselves. It seems like it was a last resort in the book for them and Penelope deserves more than that. I also like how in the show Collin is remembering their meeting and how she “teased him mercilessly, in fact” that was adorable 🥰yea it would have been nice to get a flashback, but I’m happy with how they executed that scene. I agree that the balloon scene was pretty stupid, should have been made a little more dramatic like she was physically caught on something not that she just chose not to move lol 😂cracked me up though in the behind the scenes where Nicola is like “well in the world of bridgerton horniness is more important than survival so she just stands there” lol seems about right 😂

I actually didn't like anything about Colin because I know nothing about Colin. He is so blanked and spaced out. His sleeping around barley exists in the book to that degree. He's given me the ick honestly. He doesn't know who he is and he hasn't given reason for nw to care for when he finds out. The book is much better imo. I actually liked his little praise kink and funny exerpts in the book.

The book did a lot of telling and not much showing. I never saw that Colin was lighthearted and fun. He was always distressed in the book. I like how in this show he’s goofy in love. In the book he’s acting like he was sentenced to marry her. However, the book does so much to show how hard he fell for her. Once he sees her as a woman, there is no going back. It all clicks into place and he’s wild for her. The show can still pull that off, but it hasn’t in part 1. ❤❤

I have seen so many interviews where Nicola fought for certain book scenes and quotes to be included, and I'm so glad she did. She and Luke are doing a fantastic job. I appreciate they knew enough about the source material to know what fans would like vs what they wouldn't, and I'm sorry Luke had to deal with the hate he knew he would get. You can tell both of them took the time to work on their characters and it shows in their performances. I do hate the show dragging out the LW reveal and the whole plot line of Eloise's anger, which didn't exist in the book. It's all unnecessary drama.

I also prefer how Lady Whistledown is handled in the book, as a whole. She, for the most part, uses her powers for good and not to tear people down like in the show. It makes the tension between Penelope and Colin on the issue less toxic and more endearing. She hasnt hurt him or is family in the books. I cannot choose because the spirit of the book is in the show and this is only part 1 so we are still waiting for scenes fans want from the book. I feel colin is better in the show because we don’t see his temperament and I like how they show how he feels he has to be like his brothers but chooses against that when he is with Penelope. I also like the new dynamic with them with the lessons being a way to make it up to Penelope at first and him finally waking up to his feelings about her. Penelope is more outspoken in both the book and show which makes me happy. I also like how both separately are finding themselves before finally being together romantically.

I also am with you on the book where the positives outweigh the negatives of the book. There are some iffy things that won’t fly today, but the positives were seeing their friendship and why they loved each other romantically and platonically. We do see what they would do to protect the other one. I also like seeing Colin’s internal monologue (minus the violence) and quinn’s humor. This was the first book in the series where I constantly laughed multiple times. I feel as the series progresses, quinn does try to create healthier dynamics, but sadly so far, I only saw healthy relationships in three of the books. And thank you for recognizing Luke’s and Nichola’s chemistry because I do not understand why some say they don’t have it. Like do they not have eyes?

To be fair, this video isn't really about comparing the ENTIRE relationship from book to screen (impossible to do when Part 2 isn't out to the public yet) but more so comparing those specific moments. I haven't read the books, but you've gone a long way in convincing me I probably should. The character 'development' in the show is annoying, while what you've included of the books makes so much more sense to me. The writers of the third season needed to step away from extraneous storylines and pay closer attention to how the characters appear to be motivated in the books. I am losing interest in Bridgerton as the series goes on, precisely because the characters have become caricatures. Ok, romance novels aren't meant to be War and Peace, but the characters seem to 'flow' better in the book excerpts you've included. Thank you, @LadyJenevia.

I also prefer the book's version. They could have so easily kept the beats of Polin's romance while fitting them into the broader framework of the show--or, failing that, they could have at least given them more screen time to develop their relationship. Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are doing a great job, and I want to see more of them. I am also not sure why they seem so keen on humiliating Pen and making Colin less likeable. I am keeping an open mind for part two, but the previews seem to suggest that more public humiliation is in store for Pen. I know that she and Colin will end up together, but it's stressful. 😅 Anyway, terrific video as always!

I’ve seen a lot of people upset that we didn’t get a flashback to Colin and Penelope meeting, but I actually like it better the way the show did it. They spent two seasons showing us that our girl Penelope is in love with Colin, and he has seemed, at best, oblivious, and, at worst, uninterested. Having Colin recount the way they met, with specific details like that it was a yellow head covering, or that she laughed while charmingly teasing him, shows the audience that she meant as much to him from the beginning as he meant to her. He didn’t know her before this interaction, didn’t know that they’d develop a friendship, but he still remembered every detail. It mattered to him. She mattered to him, even if it took him a while to see why.

Read the book. Liked it. Didn’t like the 10 year time difference. The show, love it. They condensed it. Pen in the book a pocket Venus. In the show a gorgeous pocket Venus. I loved the book version of how he found out about her lady whistle down persona. And how her praises her at the Duke of Hastings ball!

One issue I have with Colin and Penelope in the show is that the storyline doesn't exhibit true love between them. If they truly loved and respected each other, Colin wouldn't have tried to sabotage her engagement to Lord Debling if he truly believed she liked him, and Penelope would have told him immediately about her being LW. True love is wanting someone to be happy regardless of whether it is with you, and Colin would have supported her engagement to Debling if he thought it was good for her.

I also had a hard time processing this Pen in the show. Maybe I just read too much in the past two years that I create this bubble of what Pen should be based on my interpretation. Nicola said she hates Pen being such a good liar and maybe I need to accept that, atleast for the show (book Pen is very different). I read a comment somewhere that Pen in the film is completely different from the book. With that, I guess I have to just make peace with all the expectations I had and just appreciate the story as it is.

I like the show version of the journal entry better, if only because we get a hint of an insight into what’s going on internally in Colin Bridgerton, whereas the journal entry in the book is strictly talking about his travels. Neither are stellar, in fact the show version would’ve hit it out of the park had they stayed in the journal a little longer, but again, it gave more insight into the mechanisms of season 3 Colin Bridgerton whereas the book journal scene did none of that for me. Just made me go, he’s a good writer, I guess🤷🏾‍♀️. But, I like that it led to a discussion about Colin’s purpose in the books, whereas the show just left it there. I guess their thinking was we already had the purpose discussion in season 2, but it would’ve served as a nice reminder for those who didn’t go back to watch season 2 to hear him say once again that he feels like he has no purpose in life.

I did incorporate some references to the book for season 2 in the very first Bridgerton video I ever published but from what I can remember it was mostly just me showing a couple of really gross book quotes from book-Anthony being far too aggressive/demanding (s**ually) towards Kate and me telling the viewers "Thankfully none of these unacceptable things were adapted into the show" 😆 That was a very different video/time though since that season didn't have the whole half/half review embargo and release format and more importantly, the review embargo lifted BEFORE the season was released.

I think the reason I prefer the show first kiss is because I just didn’t like the ass-groping in the book. I felt like the kiss in the book just went too far too fast, and it’s not that I don’t like a spicy kiss. I liked how in the show it was so gentle and romantic-but I think mainly it’s that it can be interpreted ambiguously (by Penelope) in away I don’t think the book kiss can be. The book kiss was 🚨🔥🚨🔥🚨🔥, like it went so, so far beyond a favour kiss.

You expressed some of my issues with the show beautifully. I have not read the books but still there were certain aspects that bothered me from season 3 part 1. We needed more from Polin (their actual friendship when they were younger and how they met and what not) not the bit of them saying that they are friends. Show me, don't tell me. Ultimately, I believe the writers really did them dirty cause we go very little from them, compared to other couples. I hope part 2 somehow redeem this but I'm not super positive about this. Unless the episodes on the second part of the season are longer.

I love your breakdown of the book and how you contextualized aggression in media during the early 2000’s - I was a wee one in those years so I didn’t experience it directly until watching those things maybe 10 years later. Obviously it doesn’t excuse it and you make that clear, but hindsight is 20/20 and all that 🤓 I think the biggest thing for me is that I miss Colin’s inner dialogue from the books. I also miss the long conversation they had in the carriage, and the lack of communication in the show has me crying, screaming, throwing up, etc. But honestly I adore the introduction of Debling because the idea that no one else found Pen desirable is insane to me, and it lights a fire under Colin’s ass which is fun to watch 😂 Also, Luke Newton’s portrayal in the show is chefs kiss! He’s got a lot of great subtle expressions, especially in the latter half of the “lessons” in his transition from “she’s my bestie” to “oh she’s the love of my life” Anyways I’m crazy for part 2 already, I know you can’t say anything about what you’ve seen (if you’ve seen anything) but I hope you liked it! And I look forward to hearing more once the second half comes out and the embargo is lifted. Thank you for all that you do!

As always, they are different and I am learning to appreciate them as such. I think the development of their friendship/romance is better in the book but that is likely because the show gets to show us this friendship over 3 seasons instead of 1 novel. I love the Lady Danbury friendship in the book. The thing that I think I miss most from the book is the way that Pen and Colin bond over writing and the nature of Colin's writings; why show Pen thinks that prose pondering sex and relationships with other women is good, I am not sure in part because the show does nothing to show us what she identifies with in his writing. That said one of the things that bother's me most about the book is that Pen seems to feel grateful for Colin choosing her when she is a treasure. I do not think it is fair to ask Colin's character to make up for not loving her or acknowledging her feelings asap because he is allowed to love who he wants, but I do wish that his character had more opportunities to fawn over her when he does fall in love and that Penelope had more of a change to realize that this is her due from the person that she chooses to spend her life with. I do think book Colin does seem to recognize that Pen is great (one of my favorite scenes is the one where he holds her hand at a ball and he is just so pleased). As always, I wrote my own mini-novel. I will cap it off by saying thanks for the video and for my regular dose of Selfie.

Yes to all of this! One of the major differences between this season's love story and the previous two is the fact that Penelope and Colin already know each other, so there were opportunities to show how well they get along, the fact that they have a shared history, etc, but this dynamic just did not come across much to me in the show. The "lessons" and the realization of his attraction on Colin's part could just as easily happen between 2 people who have just met. (Narratively, these aspects slightly resemble Simon and Daphne in season 1, which is sort of friends-to-lovers too.) This issue overlaps with another complaint that I have (and that you've mentioned in another video): that S3 (especially part 1) doesn't show how Penelope's relationship to the Bridgerton family is so different from what we've seen of Simon's and Kate's (pre-marriage) interactions with the family. This again could have been a new angle and provide different opportunities for complicated relationship dynamics that we haven't seen on the show before. We got a little bit of it from the Pen/Colin/Eloise conflict, but if we had gotten more, then the payoff at the end of the season when Pen finally becomes a Bridgerton would have meant so much more.

I've so enjoyed your thoughtful analyses of s3 so far, and I echo your sentiments re: wanting more from Colin and Penelope onscreen together and falling in love. You know, in a show supposedly about their romance. It's been frustrating as a longtime fan of romance in media and especially as someone who has loved Polin since I first read their book in like 2010. I've mostly been going with the flow of what the writers have come up with, but Colin not knowing about Whistledown before the proposal would be a DNF moment for me if I was reading a romance novel. It's just such a bad look. I have the sinking feeling that they're going to push the reveal up to ep 6 or 7 and I will hate every second of secrecy between them. I guess we'll see. I will be one of millions ready to press play in ~10 days. Anyway! I also wanted to say that you have amazing taste in media. The consistent Selfie cutaways in pretty much every video make my life - I adored that little show and will forever be mad that it was cancelled. And your Vincenzo reference had me rolling, I LOVED that show too. Kdramas really have the formula down: 16 or so eps at 40-60 minutes each to tell a complete and closed story? Sign me up every time.

What I really think is an improvement from Book-colin to tv-Colin is that tv-Colin seems to have a better translation of anger due to concern or betrayal and anger due to jealousy. Because Book-Colin needs quite some time to realise that he conflates the two and to honor his queen as he should. I agree very 2000's male of him in the book. I am fascinated to see how this power dynamic between them will evolve. The new trailer has me scared that Penelope will be put through the wringer way more than Colin. I also agree that the way they worked out his insult to Penelope (I would never dream of courting...) on TV was just a bit too off character for me. Book-Colin is way more sophisticated and able to hide his true self behind charm and a joke - except when his evil siblings and mama push him over the brink haha.

Thank you for your analysis. For me, there are things that I liked more in the books and things I liked more in the show and, I think, my brain makes bridges form one version to another to fill gaps. I'd think that probably a good fanfic can take the best of the 2 and combine it 😆. I am one who voted for show kiss and show carriage. But jsut today I asked a friend to do an edit of the kiss with colin thoughts from the book. Show kiss is beautiful (I don't mind it is shorter) but they missed to put his desire to do it before she asked. For me what is incredibile is how many times they were UNCHAPERONED and didn't use this to create a scandal with LW having to downplay it writing (like in the book) that if Penelope Faetherington was going to end up with a Bridgerton she would quit writing because this meant that she didn't understand a thing. This way Colin could have the idea of Pen as potential interest AND getting angry to the ton that doesn't see how special she is. I so wished to get this. The other big missed opportunity is the journal! About the carriage, i liked because he said clearly he had feelings (in the book seems more lust and for Pen the proposal was an act of care) but if they decided to not have the LW reveal I WANTED for her to refuse the proposal (because she knew she was hiding something important!!!!!!!). Ok... I have to find the time to write my version of the story 😆 . . . . I wanted their first meeting so bad. Ans the scene in the market was reshooted (he has a wig in this scene as all the reshooted scenes) and who knows?!?!? I agree with almost all of what you are saying (and with choosing the book over the show in reference to the scenes you cover) but not (quite) with the way you rationalize the portrayal of his aggressive behaviour in the book. I understand you are not excusing it but I don‘t think it‘s entirely true that the times just were different in 2002. I mean, they were, sure, but I was 21 in 2002 and I remember discussions I had with female friends around romance plots romanticizing aggressive behaviour and/or asigning a passive role to the female character even at the time. I hadn‘t read Bridgerton at the time but we quarreled about the gender roles in Twilight in the mid-2000s and about Shades of Grey five years later. The conversation wasn‘t as pervasive at the time but these conversations absolutely did happen already. Also, what I‘m critizing isn‘t so much book Colin‘s behaviour (people/fictional characters make mistakes and can be flawed and so on) but that the book asks us to actually find it hot, that it is wrapped up in and an integral part of the building steaminess of the scenes. Reading it (admittedly, as my present-day self), I just cannot help disliking the way it is framed (rather than disliking the character who really overall is much more appealing than show Colin - though I actually fell that having first read the novel, then watched the show helped me to like show Colin). It is dated (which is your argument), sure - but I don‘t think 2002 is sufficiently long ago to completely explain why the writer felt it needed to be there. I honestly think it‘s a thing that‘s a little bit rubbish about the book. Period. BUT there is much to like (prefer), as you have skillfully pointed out. Thanks for the video. Great work! xx

One thing I did LOVE from the show was the whole I need to get a husband, Debling, jealous Colin change. Cliche, yes, did I love it, 100%. I felt like the book failed to add a moment where his feelings totally turned for her and kinda did a slow build up, but the I suddenly got shaken because she can interest other men works like a charm. Just wish maybe we would have dragged the jealousy, discovering his feelings, more sensual tension a bit longer. I would have preferred he learned about Lady Whistledown before he proposed. It just ruined the romance piece and became stressful for her and the viewer.

I like the direction the show is going. Wish they added in "a kiss is for two people" part though. Maybe a redemption for the mirror line

I like the show. It seemed more natural, paced but natural. I feel there is more depth to both the characters as well. I love how Colin always cared for Pen. He remembered their first interaction
