Dr. Jones. You are a breath of fresh air. I've been a nurse for 45 years. I have a Masters in Acupuncture. I didn't get the herb degree, in Chinese medicine, because I don't trust the Chinese. There is a lot of wickenism/witchy stuff that has become popular in some circles of herbal medicine. I have no interest in or use for any of that. I use science to explain things. If that doesn't work, I give God the credit and assume He'll help us figure out how it all works later. :0)

Back in 1978 we were living on a mountain six miles from the nearest school bus stop, so were home teaching our kids except for twice a week when we took them down because we felt it was important that they get some ‘socialization.’ Picked them up from school one Thursday and the six year old had a scrape on her wrist, didn’t think anything of it (this was before we knew that schools didn’t do anything with cuts or scrapes). Touched her on Sunday and she screamed, looked at her wrist and she had a red line going from the scrape to a sack under her arm. Didn’t have a phone so went down the hill to a neighbor who had one, called the local ‘hippy doctor’ (only doc in the area). He said to put comfrey on it and bring her in in the morning. I had no idea what comfrey was, but the neighbor grew it for his rabbits and gave me several leaves. Not knowing what else to do with it I put a leaf over the scrape and wrapped gauze around it. Checked it an hour later and the leaf was black and wilted. Put on another one. When I put her to bed, I put the rest on. Checked in the morning, the red line and sack under her arm was completely gone. The comfrey had drawn out all of the poison. Have grown comfrey ever since, won’t be without it. Mom had arthritis really bad in her back and neck. After we discovered comfrey, she started drinking one cup of tea every day for her arthritis (didn’t cure it but she could sure tell the difference in the pain level if she didn’t take it). Took about a week before she started noticing a difference. Took it every day for 30 years before she died of breast cancer at 84 years old, never had a problem with her liver. I think the key is moderation (as in all things but people need to decide what’s best for them and not take chances if they aren’t comfortable with it). I make a sun tea with dried comfrey and mint (sweetens the drink) and will drink a cup once or twice a month when I notice arthritis stiffening up my fingers.

You're awesome! Thanks for standing for comfrey! Also, historically it was used for feeding livestock and farmers would've noticed something has it been dangerous to liver! I think a historical assessment study should be done. Another thought is, how to get rid of the pyrizolidine? " good question yeeh🤔" Human figured out how to deal with so many potentialy toxic aspects if plants e.g. degelatinized maca root so as it does not affect your thyroid. The examples are endless. Some alkaloids would be deactivated by drying herbs in the Sun! I learned this from farmers. Some by rubbing plant with sea salt and olive oil! Let's think together so as we do not lose this beautiful healing herb

Hi Doc🙋‍♀️ Just found your channel. I have comfrey going in our garden (plant start from Azure Standard co-op) My hubby has planters facitis (flat feet) I have wrapped a poultice around his foot 4hrs 1 night & overnight 2nd night then heard about the liver issue and got nervous. I see in comments you said topical is safe...just not internal. How long is safe to keep poultice on? Also, how aren you using for stomach ulcers if we can't take internally? Thank you for your time. Grateful I found your channel. Blessings ♥️ Shanna
@HomeGrownHerbalist
@HomeGrownHerbalist 2 жыл бұрын
HI Shanna, IMO topical use is completely harmless. You can leave poultices on as long as you like. You can also put the tincture on topically which is easier and less messy. Internally, in my opinion from several decades of constant use for all sorts of issues, it's also practically harmless. The FDA disagrees....but they think ibuprofen and chemotherapy are a good idea so.... In all things we should do a risk:benefit assessment. About everything can kill us under certain circumstances. If we go to a little league baseball game, we could hir by a car on the way or be struck by lightening. If we recklessly take comfrey internally, we might die of liver failure. Near as I can tell, from my own experience, the odds of either are similar. If you want to be extra cautious with an ulcer, you can just put some comfrey tincture on the stomach topically. The good stuff (allantoin) will still soak in and the bad stuff (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) won't. Doc Jones homegrownherbalist.net/about-the-school/

This is a sensitive topic, but there are a number of respectable midwives who don't recommend comfrey soaks for deep perineal stitches, because that area already tends to heal so fast, and they think that the comfrey sometimes causes the outer layers to heal and the stitches to dissolve faster than the lower layers can heal up. Have you run into this with other wound types?

Thank you for sharing the scientific facts as well as your common sense & practical experience. I've read the root has the highest level of pyrazoline; I don't plan to use that when the rest of the plant is so useful. You are such an inspiration=) Would you use this on a healthy 2yr old who is recovering from surgery (skull fracture)? He was nearly run over by a car- PRAISE the Lord, his doctors say he is a miracle & will make a full recovery! He may need jaw surgery later. He's likely quite bruised up internally & I'm sure he will be hurting. I was thinking a comfrey, chamomile, echinacea & yarrow tincture (in 50/50 vodka & glycerin)- just a dropperful 2-3x a day would be helpful? I'm trying to decide if comfrey /yarrow are redundant internally? I have them in a wound spray & salve. I feel like there's always a threat of infection after being in a hospital, not to mention MRSA - hence the echinacea p. Would love to know your thoughts...

Thank you for the video. (I did catch that you said it could be used as a tincture or as a poultice which answered my question. So I changed this comment.) Curious what ratio of other ingredients you'd put in a comfrey poultice? ... People that raise meat rabbits say they are able to use comfrey a lot for feed. But I don't think they do ONLY comfrey. I'm not sure their feed ratios though, but its pretty common as a rabbit food. ... Re: the Crones disease... I would put that on the glyphosate that that guy had been on his whole life. Both crones disease and austism show up and have their increase in numbers correspond with usage of glyphosate on farms... this is mathematical where you can see it going up with each other's graphs.

Can anyone address this: I understand the disclaimer not suggesting anyone take comfrey internally, however (and I am paraphrasing), I thought you said if one chooses to take it internally that the S. officinale would be the choice over the S. uplandica? If that is true, I am confused because Susan Weed, Herbalist, said, (again I am paraphrasing), that the S. officinale is wild and the S. uplandica is cultivated and has less the P. toxins in the leaves and that she, SW, consumes infusions of the S. uplandica on a consistent basis, possibly up to a few quarts a week? I did hear you say the larger summer leaves have less P. toxins, but what about the s. officinale versus the s. uplandica internally. Thank you so very much!

I don't use comfrey on cancer cases. Dandelion is a specific for mammary cancers and there are other good anti-cancer herbs as well. But, for cancer, I'd strongly urge you to get modern medical interventions as well. Don't combine herbals and pharmaceuticals without discussing it with someone that really understands both. Also, don't do anything herbal for a week or so before any surgery. We have a module on cancer and herbs in the school. Doc Jones homegrownherbalist.net/about-the-school/

I have a question for clarification, please. When you say you don't give it to people who have bad livers, take a lot of pharmaceuticals or pregnant ladies are you speaking only for internally or for external use also. Say for wound healing would it be okay for someone who takes a lot of pharmaceuticals and wants to heal a nasty scrap on the arm?

My MIL has ulcers. Would a tincture taken internally be ok? What ratio/dosage would be best? She is in her late 50s with previous minor stroke but doesn't take her aspirin regularly but does take blood pressure meds, if that matters. Would topical be better to be less risky? She is also a smoker, if that matters too. I am wary of things with her. Was thinking of doing cabbage juice (cold pressed homemade) too but haven't yet. Can't decide. Lol but I wanna help! I'm a beginner and just started my medicine herbs. So far have salve and lotion, sage tincture, basil tincture, and rosemary tincture and have a plantain tincture started. All in 80 proof vodka.
