Or even earlier. IMO these recommended 7,500to 10,000 miles is way way too long. I do my oil changes at 3,000 to 3,500 on lightly used gas engines and 3,500 to 4,500 on lightly used diesels. Depending on the extremes I will shorten the maintenance times even more because in the long run oil and filters are cheap.

@Panthers89Fan9000000
@Panthers89Fan9000000 2 жыл бұрын
@@2003evodave that's a waste of money and old school thinking. Believe it or not, oil is a technology. All oil types have vastly improved over the years, including Dino oil. This improvement along with other improvements allow us to go longer on an oil change interval. These other improvements I speak of are plenty. There's been improvement in oil filters, fuel quality (The government mandated a minimum amount of fuel additives all fuel must have), and cars themselves (computers monitor everything in a vehicle these days and metallurgy has definitely improved). With your thought process, I'm guessing you are an older gentleman. Nothing wrong with that. I just know when something has been set in your mind for so long, it is hard to change. The easiest and most factual way to change this thinking is an oil analysis. Blackstone Labs is such a company that does oil analysis. Lots of DIYers use Blackstone Labs every now and then to get a hold on how their engine is doing. Send off your oil after 3500 miles to Blackstone and they will tell you whether or not you can go longer on an oil change. I can almost guarantee you they will tell you the engine can go longer on an oil change.

I'm an avid motorcycle rider, and in our community synthetic oil can be $20 per quart. So many riders use Shell Rotella T6 from Walmart for $22 per 4 quarts because it's JASO MA rated (safe for motorcycle clutches). For the past several years, there have been so many forum wars about why you should or shouldn't use this oil vs the designer oils that cost 4x as much. There are now NO serious reviews that put this argument to bed once and for all. Would be awesome to see it. I'm sure all the motorcycle forums across the country would refer to the review.

I have a 1982 Mercedes 240D with close to 400,000 miles on it. Sometimes, when it is burning excessive engine oil, and is smoking like a coal fired freight train, I add a quart of 90-140 Gear Oil to the crankcase. It runs smoother, quieter, and smokes a lot less. I have another engine waiting to go into her, when I get some time to spend in the shop. Until then, I just do what works to buy a few more tbousand miles or so. I have to chuckle at the sphincter-breaths that swear by expensive designer oils, additives, and their polly-parrot reciting of the advertisement data. Usually, during the lifetime of their vehicle, they spend enough on all of that fairytale crap, that they could have purchased a new vehicle.

I liked the Kirkland oil video. I am a bearing Lubrication engineer at GM and help design the crankshafts and bearings for several of our engines including the smallblock engine over the last 20 years. I am not really surprised by your results. Probably the most important part of the label on the oil container is the Dexos certification. That is a GM proprietary certification and oil manufacturers have to submit their samples directly to GM for their approval. If an oil has the Dexos certification I would have no problem putting the oil in my GM car.

An excellent set of tests if I may say so. Great video. I commented before, on a previous engine oil related video, that there are standard tests which provide insight to the characteristics of oil performance. This suite of cold temperature flow, heat resistance, lubricity, and wear resistance are part of the industry test regime, and the lab tests you asked for are best-in-class when it comes to assessing the performance of lubricants. Dexos 2 approvals should provide consistency of formulation if both products claim they are compliant, and your tests certainly confirmed that both of these products were comparable. One issue of concern when buying engine oil is whether you can truly rely on the label; has the vendor really achieved the claimed approvals? If you buy from a reputable supplier this will not be in doubt but some disreputable businesses will use the Dexos 2 logo despite not having it i.e. not using the correct formulation, and sometimes make outrageous claims such as an engine oil being suitable for gasoline and diesel engines, motorcycles, and heavy machinery. Such products do not exist. Best to buy from a well-known or trusted supplier. Your tests conclusively proved that the Kirkland 5w-30 product is within specification and therefore represents great value for money. Thanks for doing such a great job.

@@ProjectFarm 7:55 do you realize that you have just blown the minds of many car drivers here in Europe? Our car manufacturers claim the engine oil should be changed every 30.000 km (18.600 miles) - because of ecology? And many of these poor drivers do actually follow this "advice". The engines are clogged up very soon and a new car is needed because it is not worth to repair the poorly maintained engine with very often no more than 100.000km (60.000miles). I believe this the reason why we are suggested to use long life engine oils - sales of the new cars will be this way kept constant :) because their engines will not last long anyway :)

Warren makes excellent lubricants and have done so for many decades. Super Tech and Mag 1 are two of the most reliable and highest performing oil brands of Warren oils and you can't beat the prices. Mobil 1, pennzoil titanium, Quaker state, are good brands or anything over $28 bucks for a 5 qt jug and dont get the auto parts brand either, and stay away from that royal purple crap too, lol, I used to use recycled oil on my customers, but then I stop when I saw the results from the brand I use, which I recommend to my customers as I my self use on my personal and family members cars. Idemitsu is the brand but dont get it from internet lots of fakes claiming is the real deal , buy it from a local auto parts that sell it, hard to find at Auto parts, but some will carry and your car will thank you, 4 oil changes u will see dipstick coming out cleaner not black when u check the oil lvl before your start the 5th change

Excellent analysis. I just bought a 2 x 5 qt package from Costco this past weekend, since I had heard people say good things about it. I had previously been using conventional oil, but switched to the Castrol Edge Advanced Full Synthetic High Mileage for my 2005 Cavalier last March. It's exactly about a year now and time for a change. I did just over 3K miles. It held up pretty well but I've noticed the oil level start to drop rapidly over the past few weeks. I typically only check the level once in about 3 months, until it gets close to the interval change. I will say that the Full Synthetic definitely made the engine a lot smoother and quieter, especially at the late stage. But the Castrol ( which supposedly is rated higher than the Mobil 1) was @ $28 + for 5 qts, and the Kirkland is $38.99 for 10 qts. That's about a @ $10 savings per 5 qts. If it's almost the same in performance, then why not? Will update later down the road, maybe after 1K miles/ 3 months.

Use the Kirkland 5W30 SYN in my Acadia, Canyon, and 200k mile Suburban for years. Never had any issues at all and much cheaper than big brands. Changed every 3k miles religiously regardless of what manual says and motors are spotless inside. 5.3 in Suburban looks brand new inside when you pull valve covers off.

you can definetly go upwards of 10k miles (non turbo) for synthetic oil, though I wanted to see if this would hold up against the big names. 3k oil changes is old school and time consuming! Save your dime and time :)

@@qtopthisqif u want ur car to last 200 to 300k miles change every 3 to 5 k miles, just because it says it can last that long doesn’t mean if u plan on owning ur car for 20 years u should, there is metal shavings and wear and tear, if u have prestine oil in your car it’s entire life it’s gonna make a difference, if u sell your car at 100k or 125k then you will never see the difference

@@MikeJones-gj4me No need to (typical daily vehicle), personally I'd run quality oil and get analyzed throughout and project the wear and tear that would occur (track/daily). The thing is a lot of this info is already online. Cars get over 200k without rigorous oil changes as well, though obviously one of if not the most important factors to engine life.

I saw this trick the other day to help catch the oil from an oil filter positioned like that one in the video on the Suburban. The guy grabbed the filter using a red solo cup and spun the filter off using the cup. It catches all the oil when the filter disconnects from the vehicle, holds the filter in the cup, and doesn't make a mess. Smart!

Thank you for taking the time to do this fair oil test comparison. While using good synthetic oil does help, it also helps to change the oil more frequently. Going 4,5, 6,7 thousand miles between oil changes Vs only 3 to 4 thousand miles results in far cleaner internal engine components and less overall engine wear. Those little post office cube trucks we see on our nation's roads each day were all built during 1986 & 1988 and their 4 cylinder Chevy engines are still running reliably today almost 40 years after they were put into service and their oil is changed every 3,000 miles or less. Those Grumman built aluminum bodies and Grumman aircraft quality paint jobs on them while over 35 years old look almost as good as new.

Most synthetics allow you to go much further than 3000 miles with nothing adverse. Its real advantage is in Cold temps when the synthetics shine. In warm to hot weather, the differences are not all that great, though theres less crud producted over time.

I've been a Costco member for awhile and have found them trustworthy. Generally their stuff is quality and there's been no complaints except when they discontinued something I like. I've found their store brands to be better than the name brands which is refreshing. Still, nice to get the reviews and testing to keep them on their toes. Thanks.

I remember reading that Costco requires their Kirkland brand to be something like 5% BETTER than whatever the name brand thing is. Not sure how that metric is calculated on certain items, but after doing a lot of testing, I find it to be true in my opinion. Also, their store brand items are frequently actually made by the top of the line competitor (but not always). For kirkland batteries, for example, Duracell makes Kirkland branded batteries. I would buy ANYTHING with Kirkland's brand stamped on it and feel comfortable that it was a good purchase. Cannot recommend Costco highly enough.

As a railroad employee I have spent many hours placing loaded tank cars of lube oil into facilities that process oil from tank cars into packaging. One tank car I tracked from a refinery in Texas was turned into no less than seven different brand containers! Refineries make the oil to meet a given standard and sell under bulk contract to packaging facilities. I was stunned to watch pallets of various brands of oil bottled, placed in boxes, then onto pallets and loaded into trucks to various retail outlets. Same with some tools. We spot the raw materials and they are turned into molten ingots which are then forged into wrenches with different brand names. Did you think Craftsman had their own steel mill? The massive power hammers the slam the hot steel into wrenches are an awesome sight. And that's just the beginning. Don't even ask me about beer...

For my work, i get to visit many different plants quite often. The practice you described is extremely common. Your refrigerant gas for cars? Yeah, those cans are all filled at the same factory from the same gas tank, they just tag on a different brand or can shape for each batch. Same thing with a lot of food products (especially trail mixes, and most packaged foods). Even boxes -- the logo on cardboard boxes (not the product logo, but the company that sells the box) doesn't even match the factory it comes out of. It could have been produced by Company A, but the logo says Company B. There's a lot fewer differences between brands than people realize.

Same goes for most gasoline. It's sent to refineries then once turned into gas it goes off to different gas companies who just throw some additives in and send it to stations.
