This week, Cal is at Doug Duren’s farm outside of Cazenovia, Wisconsin hunting deer and talking Chronic Wasting Disease. Home to our good friend, Cazenovia is also ground zero for CWD, a 100% fatal and highly transmissible prion based disease. Join Cal as he hunts with Doug to see first hand how CWD is changing Wisconsin whitetail deer hunting traditions.

I live in wisconsin. The source of all our outbreaks has been canned hunting operations. No ifs,ands,or buts. More deer than ever now and lack of killers. Nobody kills does anymore to protect "their" herd,deer. Sportsmanship is for sure out the window. I hunt public property and have no problem filling all my tags. You can roll archery tags onto your rifle tag. I believe EHD kills way more deer than CWD. Just my view,but I do spend 200+ days a year in the woods.

Yeah man I hunt alot to in Wisconsin. everyone looking for bullwinkle lol. Won't shoot does ... but I do and yeah we can shoot alot of em 12 bucks a tag . We do alot of drives in gun season and shoot alot of doe but many don't do that it changed for sure 100% and the buck to doe ratio I see is like 40 50 doe 5 to 10 bucks it's way way off . My logic is shoot does they make babies yes but one that lives to 5 or 6 makes 5 or 6 babies maybe some twins in there. But 1 buck breeds how many doe ? In a season ? Alot I'm guessing so in areas maybe dudes should do earn a buck again or something

Scrapie comes from farm-raised sheep feed with animal by-products (food containing animal protein), Mad cow disease comes from farm-raised cows, feed with animal by-products (food containing animal protein). There are more and more farms in North America raising white-tailed deer and feeding them questionable food (probably containing animal protein). The three diseases (Scrapie, MCD & CWD) are modified infective proteins called prions. More research is urgently needed into deer farming practices. I am a wildlife vet by the way.
@xrpfreak7881
@xrpfreak7881 2 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that nature has built in check mechanisms. This disease originated in farm raised deer, cramped in to tight unnatural areas. Nature sees this as an overabundance of deer in a specific area and the disease kicks in from the transfer of body fluids from within the enclosed deer. The population then collapses bringing deer levels back to appropriate levels for the land. In the wild this would be natures way of a population control. This is my own theory. I have no evidence for it.
@Eric-dr5bj
@Eric-dr5bj 2 жыл бұрын
How was the spread of mad cow stopped? If I remember it was mass slaughter of entire herds and change in the feeding practices. Something similar would have to take place to slow CWD spread
@manuelwebe
@manuelwebe 2 жыл бұрын
@@Eric-dr5bj Yes, MCD was stopped with the mass slaughter of cows. That would be next to impossible to do with CWD in deer as there are at least three species of deer involved (white-tailed. mule deer and elk) in many of the lower 48 states and some Canadian provinces. Controlling overpopulation, however (as Doug is trying to do in this video) is a good management practice as the disease is clearly density-dependent.

pretty sure the first record of CWD was from a whitetail in a pen with sheep. CWD is probably either a mutation of Scrapie or could be the same thing just a lack of genetic testing to confirm.

Such a interesting episode. Cwd is something we have to deal woth here in Norway aswell. We mainly se Cwd in reindeer but there are yearly reports of infected deer. Right now you are encouraged to send lymph and brain samples of reindeer, i believe deer are encouraged aswell to the norwegian environmental agency. They have made the testing and test kits free and have the hunting community in their side in this case aslo. I believe that a coordinated effort is the only way to go, if we are to learn and to try and combat these types of illnesses in game.

Thanks for this video, i am from southern Quebec where we have not had issues with CWD yet or that we are aware of. Where we hunt on the family farms we have a huge abundance of deer due to the fact that we can control how many taken every season and not overhunt. It also makes us wonder if we should start taking more does than we do to trim down the deer population so that it does not get out of control.

There are some inherent cultural attitudes and practices entangled with hunting and I hope it doesn’t take a wiping out of all deer to get our brains away from them, like the stock piling up deer is a good thing. Or that an abundant deer herd is healthy. All I want is my share, Don’t care about what others especially nature wants. Wanting everything easy. We must also realize what little control we actually have but at the same time we can be great docile natural collaborators with nature.

How are people keeping there meat while the head is being tested for CWD? Do they process the meat and wait for the results to throw out or keep?
@captmiker7423
@captmiker7423 2 жыл бұрын
I hunt down the road from Doug & shot 2 deer last rifle season. A local processor charged $120/ deer for the basic cutting & wrapping. They will cut up your deer almost immediately but not make any sausage until you contact them letting them know your deer was “CWD not detected”. All that was required from me was a phone call to the processor letting them know my CWD results from the WI DNR. The WI DNR took almost a month to get my results back. The testing location told me it usually takes 1 week. The testing process needs to be sped up. If CWD was detected, you’re still on the hook for $120/ deer & you can tell the processor to throw out your meat or you’ll pick it up. It’s up to you if you want to eat it or not. It’s a lot of money that could be wasted. I need to learn how to process my own. CWD was not detected in mine-thankfully. I could have been out $240 if they were positive & if I was following the CDC guidelines. The processor I used waited until all deer came in after rifle season w/ CWD not detected results & then batch ground sausage starting in January. That was my experience. There are many opinions on this subject on how things are done…
@ColoradoStreaming
@ColoradoStreaming 2 жыл бұрын
Colorado will refund your processing costs up to $200 I think if your deer tests positive for CWD in a mandatory CWD testing unit. Supposedly its very hard to clean any tools that have been in contact with the Prions and you basically need to hard soak everything in bleach.

During the WI 9 day gun deer season I took my deer to a local store that is a designated registration station & CWD sampling station. Checking in our deer at a station is tradition for us, not just phoning them in. These stations can be found on the WI DNR website or Google WI CWD sampling stations. They had iPads for registration & trained CWD sampling workers. Some are biologists. All they did was cut out the lymph nodes. They did not remove the heads. They also checked teeth for age. My deer were a 3 & 4 year old. I didn’t have them caped for mounting but did overhear the CWD sampler say he could extract the lymph nodes a cleaner way if you were planning to have it caped & mounted. I do not know if the CWD sampling technicians (biologists) are at the registration stations outside of the 9 day gun deer season. Hope that helps.

@@richrobinson202 imagine the trail of cwd left by one deer. Anything they pee on, poo on, or lick will carry cwd for 3 years . Surgical tools used on animals with cwd must be thrown away because the heat required to kill cwd would melt steel. 4 years ago we had large herds of healthy deer. Now small herds of sickly ones. Best thing would be to kill them all and start a new in a few years . Or just let it spread and slowly kill them all and give it time to morph into something that could kill humans.

I can understand the concerns. Prion diseases in cattle can spread to humans and you often don’t know you have it until decades later. Generally speaking you shouldn’t eat sick animals. Maybe the only way do deal with the issue is eliminate deer farming and reduce feeders. That way there will be less contact in small areas where food is, so when the CWS infected animals shed it is less likely to be consumed by uninfected deer.

The WI DNR has wasted literally millions researching CWD with zero results in 25 years. The herd is obviously flourishing despite CWD, it doesn't infect humans, and we'll never be able to eradicate it. How has anyone's hunting experience been improved due to the DNRs research of CWD?? All of that money should be redirected to acquisition of public land and habitat improvement on those lands. Something tangible to hunters for all our tax dollars.

The only thing people have seen is a decrease in the number of deer, including trophy bucks. It has been around for decades, why do we now try to control mother nature? Furthermore, if people are concerned about it instead of shooting everything, quit corning in the summer and planting food plots to congregate deer.

I mostly agree. It hasn’t been transmitted to humans, yet, and I have heard of one long term study that supports this, but I still don’t want to be the first and neither does my wife. We test. My issue with the DNR, in addition to what you pointed out, is that the testing turnaround takes so long. Reduce testing time, and/or if a replacement tag is issued for a deer taken by firearm or muzzleloader, the same method of take should be permissible through the end of the late bow season for that tag.

So let me understand this now, Every deer has these Prions within their bodies and it's only a few that have one of them that decides to go crazy and get out of shape. That deer can then pass this to others via body fluids etc. It also stays in the Earth for upnto 4 years now so where that big 10 point falls and dies and Mother Earth reclaims him, eventually Brouse will grow(in infected soil) and Bambi comes along and munches down on (Infected Brouse). So 99.9% of us have killed deer that are infected and never even knew it because 99.9% of us Will Never see a deer in the late stages of it because they are getting killed of by what? Predators, Logging trucks, soccer mons and hunters. So how does the Department of Wildlife And Fisheries of Any state think they can stop it?
