Is Day of the Dead Better than Dawn of the Dead?

When I asked "Is Dawn of the Dead the Greatest Zombie Movie Ever?" in a recent review, a lot of you said yes. However, many people professed to love Day of the Dead even more. And because I'm all about making you guys happy, I figured I better make a Day of the Dead video just for you. See? I'm like the gift that keeps on giving!
This third installment in Romero's Dead trilogy can be a little bit divisive. Some love it, some...love it less. However, I think we can all agree that Tom Savini delivers the gruesome goods in this splatter classic.
Can Day of the Dead earn Romero and Savini another 5 Barf Bag rating? Let's get to the gore and find out!

I may lose my undead cred over this, but..... YES, Day is overall a better film than Dawn. I think because: A. Like Blade Runner, there’s a bit too much debate that depends on which version of Dawn you’re talking about. B. That stupid “hero” music that plays when Ken Foree decides to fight his way to the helicopter almost ruins Dawn for me. C. Dawn’s opening sequence is incredible, probably right up through the protagonist’s helicopter escape from the city but the potential best antagonist - the cop Woolley (“Woolley’s gone apeshit, man” “Hey, hey, hey!” ) exits the film way too fast, securing Cpt. Rhodes as the best villain in any Romero Dead movie 4. Rhodes has the best death scene in the trilogy as well 5. It’s easy to forget how much Dawn saga in the time between the mall is secured and when the bikers show up - Day’s tension percolates from start to finish 6. Bub is the trilogy’s most distinctive and only sympathetic zombie 7. Day has a “love theme” at the end lol 8. Day emphasizes “humanity is the real danger” almost as well as Night of the Living Dead did 9. Day has a larger, better ensemble cast overall 10. The most obvious reason: Tom Savini’s makeup/FX are superior

This is by far my favorite zombie movie of all time!!! Dawn is great, but I've always appreciated the story of everyone just falling apart and not really knowing how to handle themselves. The greatest special effects scene ever filmed, in my opinion, is the head rip scene towards the end. The fact that his voice pitch squeals higher and higher is realistic enough and his mouth continues to move. Just cannot beat that scene!!!

@Captain Brandon Punk & Horror Lover Same here. I think it's common for directors to lose some of that passion when money is thrown at them as opposed to them fighting to get it. I grew up with Romero, Carpenter, Landis etc and they all made great films back then, but suffered later on. Land was okay but I never got the Big Daddy zombie being aware (Bub was trained to be that way) and also that lame ending of "they're just looking for a place to live"... no, they're dead... they're f**king dead, and you want to teach them tricks (or in this case, let them wander off after chomping on a few hundred families). Diary and Survival just didn't work for me, especially that line at the beginning of Diary where the lead says "I added music" when she's talking about her home movie. Yeah, you'd do that wouldn't you. "Hmm, I wonder what works for when my bestie got chewed". Still, Romero gave us some great films and not just his zombie trilogy. I liked Knight Riders, Monkey Shines was a great thriller and Creepshow still stands out as a great horror/comedy.
@mk-ultramags1107
@mk-ultramags1107 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely right at the top of the list. Personally I love 'Land of the Dead' and 'Diary of the Dead' as well. Romero carried along pretty well when he was allowed to have free reign. 'Land of the Dead' was the only time he really got a STUDIO Budget and he did some great stuff with it. The cinematography and acting were top notch. Dennis Hopper was awesome. Gotta give thanks to '28 Days Later' and the remake of 'Dawn of the Dead' because it showed studios that well made zombie films could make money. Romero deserved it after all those years.

Wow, the timing, I watched Day of the Dead yesterday. Romero really went balls-to-the-wall with this one. I've loved it since I was a kid and was staying with the branch of the family that would let me rent horror, even something so gory and violent. I was eight or nine and watched it alone. That maybe had a bearing on my development. All I know is as a gore hound this film sets a high precedent. The younglings today have no idea how lucky they are to have the Horror Geek to guide them to the good ones without having to wade through all the time-wasters that fail to live up to the promise of their description or box art.

Pretty nuts to think that for the longest time, people thought this was not only the worst Dead flick but a bad zombie movie in general. It’s great to see that the last decade and overall time has been kind to Day and aged like a fine wine! I’ll never forget renting this from a Blockbuster in 2004 and cementing my love for zombie flicks that Resident Evil and the Dawn remake helped kickstart and then during the same year The Walking Dead started to publish and I started reading with issue 9. Nah. Dawn is still better. Outside of Bub, there isn't a single memorable zombie here...sure they all look better FX-wise...but there's no sense that these were real people before they were zombies - none of them have any individual character (compare them to Hare Krishna, Nurse, Airport, kids, obese guy, etc. in Dawn). The zombies here are just the weather...like a storm in a Gothic that forces all the diverse characters to spend the night in the haunted castle together so we can watch them consume each other with their character flaws. Unfortunately none of these characters or their flaws are as interesting as those that came before. Sarah is at best a discount Fran, and Rhodes is just Cooper with a gun and some lackeys. The rest of the cast is utterly forgettable...Hell, even Johnny with 5 minutes of screen time is more interesting than the cardboard characters in this movie.

Night is always going to be my favourite, because you feel that claustrophobia like you are locked in that house with the survivors. However, if its just between Dawn and Day then Dawn is my favourite, hands down. Yes the effects are better in Day, but Dawn has the more realistic story, to me anyways. I can relate better to the Dawn story. And it has that added reminder of 'even when you might be safe from the dead, you still have to fear the living'. That is kind of in Day as well, but its more a case of constant close quarter craziness. And as much as I know most people prefer the original, I actually prefer the remake of Dawn to the original Dawn. I find it far more unforgiving in its demonstration that the world is done for. Its just straight up zombies brutalizing humans. And come on, Johnny Cash's 'When the Man comes Around' intro music . . . just perfection.

I once read the original script to "Day of the Dead", some elements did make it into the remake with Dennis Hopper, I believe. And Romero introduces a strange religious element (not in keeping with dawn) that the infected when given the last rites can't resurrect as zombies. It also dd feature domesticated zombies, who were trained not to attack certain colored vests.

It's not better than 'Dawn' but is a worthy successor. Also, this movie inspired so many more ideas/ movies and videogames that if I had to name them all it would be impossible. In recent years Day Of The Dead has become my go to Zombie film, much like a comfort movie oddly enough. I love the way that the characters prove that even during a Zombie apocallypse people still find ways to mess things up among themselves. The make-up fx are tremendous and look great even by modern standards. This is probably George Romero's most well made Zombie film with great acting across the board, tight direction, fabulous make-up and fx and a brilliant music soundtrack to top it off. A fitting end to the original Dead trilogy. Great review, highly entertaining and re-watchable 👍

What was the original script?
@Ataraxia462
@Ataraxia462 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonia7724 You can find the script online pretty easily. Basically Romero wanted a $7 million budget for the original script because it was much bigger in scope. He wanted to show how they were training a zombie army to fight the zombie hordes. The studio didn't want to spend that money with the amount of gore in the film so they dropped the budget to $3.5 million and cut those scenes. A lot of the unused ideas ended up in Land of the Dead ($15 million budget and released by Universal).

One moment from that script always comes back to me and there's some evil doctor (who changed for the actual film) and he ties one female survivor to a post and forgets she's there or something, and then the zombies break in (as they always do). Just the thought of that stuck with me.

Day of dead is my personal favorite of the trilogy and not just because I enjoy the more dark and claustrophobic tone of the film but also because you can see Romero's progression as a film maker and even as a person. Especially thought the portrayal of Sarah as literally the strongest character in the film opposed to Barbra and Francine being weaker characters in night and dawn. I feel Savini also carried this idea over into the night of the living dead 1990 version with how Barbra was portrayed more like Sarah.

Short answer: i think it is. I think it shows a more complex subtext, it's got a more nihilist aura and it's more claustrophobic, both phisically and psychologically speaking. I love the way it devastates humanity and how it suffocates the viewer. I also love its approach to God-like science and its dark sides, that is why I put this movie close to Cronenberg's masterpieces. Last but not least, it is a true "SPLAAATTER THAT MATTERRRRS". Dawn of the Dead I felt had better pacing and more story to it, I guess the fact that it's set mid-way through the ongoing outbreak kind of helps with it. It was more easily able to be relatable than Day of the Dead because it had more of 'what would you do' when the zombie outbreak happens. There's more moral ambiguity that is even discussed throughout the film. Day however I feel is a more full on zombie film, again helping the fact it set at the end of the outbreak when the vast majority of the world is now part of the Living Dead, it's more of a bleak apocalypse. Has far more zombie related stuff going on and of course the GORE & special effects is on a new level. I like both movies, but for different reasons.

Day is my favorite Zombie movie of all time, but this love needed over a decade to grow. The fact, Tom Savini shocked the world with his evolutionary ability to create the best violence and gore effects others not even dreamed of becomes crystal clear first time watching. For me, Tom Savini is one of the most important architects of Horror. Without him the over the top violent and bloody Horrormovies, that we love, wouldn't be the same. I remember when I first saw Dawn, I was in middle school and it blew my mind. It was one of the greatest films I've ever seen. When I first saw Day shortly after I was a bit disappointed. Years later when I got the DVD and revisited it I really loved it. It is actually the film I revisit most in the dead series. Its strange, Dawn is the better film and is great but through the years Day has crept up and became my personal favorite of the series. A big reason for that is because of Joe Pilato as Captain Rhodes. He is one of my favorite characters in film history. I love that guy. "I'm running this monkey farm now Frankenstein, and I want to know, what the fuck you're doing with my time?" Yeah, he has some Great dialogue in this film. Great video as usual.
