Romans 7:2‭-‬3 KJV I was digging the sermon until it contradicted Scripture. God hates divorce, Jesus states that in the original plan divorce was not permitted + no man should separate what God unites, Paul states that God wants the separated spouses to remain unmarried and Matthew was speaking to the Jews that had a tradition that if a betrothed person(under contract/ covenant) fornicated then they could put them away. Only 2 reasons for Divorce 1. Death 2. If your fiancé/ betrothed fornicates before the "I do" event. If your spouse leaves or if you are separated, you must remain unmarried.

You believe it was just assumed and thats why it is left out of Mark??? or maybe you are misinterpreting "for any cause" and the way it is said in mark and matthew actually mean the same thing. There are verses in the bible that say you can get a divorce. The verse that says you are free does not mean you are free to marry again. There is not one verse that says you may marry again when your spouse is still alive. There are many verses that say it is adultery. No matter how or why you divorced, people are not free to marry again until that x spouse is dead. You are wrong Jeff.

Where does the old covenant law say that divorce is permissible? That's a blatantly false statement. Jesus is not in conflict with the law because there is no law that permits it. The Pharisees interpreted Deut 24 as permission and commandment (the grammar does not bear that out), but the law only deals with the injustice done to the divorced woman.

1 Corinthians 7:15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.

Galatians 5:18 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

I pray that you study this out in the Greek text and the difference between sending away (separation) and giving a certificate of divorce. They are 2 separate actions and both are required. Yeshua said that if you send a woman away (without the certificate of divorce) you cause her to commit adultery. It’s a mistranslation. Just as it is today if you marry a person that is only separated you are committing adultery. There was no change in Gods perfect law

This discussion with the Lord regarding D&R is documented not only in Matthew but also in Luke and Mark. The only time the "exception' is mentioned is in Matthew, and it happens to be the one book that was written directly to the Jews who were still under the law at that time. Could it be that he was referencing the ONE EXCEPTION that was listed under the Mosaic law? If that were the case, it would sure help explain the rest of the scriptures which seem to suggest that there's no cause for remarriage once an oath has been made. Just some food for thought.

I absolute love everything Jeff stands for but I believe he let his cultural lenses shroud this issue (like we all have at times). This is rare from Jeff but it's not a very good exegetical conclusion. The Greek word "douloo" means "to enslave, to be a slave, to make a slave of, be subject to, serve and obey" and is NEVER used in relation to the covenantal bond of marriage. When Paul speaks of the binding character of marriage, he uses the Greek word "deo", not "douloo". 1210. deo, deh'-o; a prim. verb; to bind (in various applications, lit. or fig.):- bind, be in bonds, knit, tie, wind. See also 1163, 1189. 1402. douloo, doo-lo-o; from 1401; to enslave (lit. or fig.):- bring into (be under) bondage, x given, become (make) servant. We can see some examples of Paul's usage of this word "douloo" throughout the Scriptures. It is consistently used in the context of slavery and submission. "And having been set free from sin, you became DOULOO (servants) of righteousness." (Romans 6:18, The Scriptures) "For though I am free from all, I made myself a DOULOO (servant) to all, in order to win more," (1 Corinthians 9:19) "So we also, when we were children, were under the elementary matters of the world, being DOULOO (enslaved)." -(Galatians 4:3) The Greek word for "bound" in this passage is "deo" (Strong's #1210) and means "to bind, to tie, to put under obligation, bound by law, duty". In context, it refers to being tied by obligation to the marriage covenant and is the exact same Greek word used by Paul in other passages related to the marriage bond. "For the married woman has been DEO (bound) by Torah to the living husband" (Romans 7:2) "Are you DEO (bound) to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed." (1 Corinthians 7:27) "A wife is DEO (bound) by Torah as long as her husband lives" (1 Corinthians 7:39) If his conclusion is true, I don't believe this is how to prove it from the text. May the Lord Jesus Christ lead us all into his truth in every subject, especially the controversial ones.

So yes, Jesus did not abolish the Law but He did fulfill the Law in this regard by establishing the true purpose of marriage, indicating that the Law only permitted divorce due to the hardness of the people. I am disappointed with where this sermon went very early. Completely unexpected from this Pastor who I usually admire for his excellent Biblical consistency and exegesis. An astonishing error for something Jesus resolved in an attempt to trap Him regarding this very issue.

Marriage is a complex thing and personal think depending on people's situations. only God can know the true foundation of that marriage and who stay married and who doesn't. We have to understand salvation is a personal thing and personal journey, marriage is the same thing that is why we have to leave it to God and allow God to guide us personally because remember some.stay and die I don't think it is God's will either so pray and be guided by the Holy Spirit and He shall guide u to stay , to let it go and be restored in one way or another but divorce isn't the end of salvation or anyone's destiny God is able to forgive and restore anyone as any other sins or failures in our lives ..But teaching about it it is good at least those who goes into it know what is about and those who divorced understand his grace too..God Is love and He is able to redeem all of us as long as we repent and follow his leading. the word of God says that if the unbelieving spouse wants to leave "let him leave". we do not have to fight for it. we can let them go. read that scripture fully. if you insist the believer go and "fight" for that marriage, it is contrary to the revealed truth. i disagree with you in that context.

Since approx 70% of divorces currently are issued by women, please address what us faithful ex husbands who did not want divorce should do according to scripture. Seems backwards to constantly refer to the men regarding instigating a divorce nowadays since it's primarily women.

Why does The NT clearly say the Law is "obsolete "? The Law was given as a school master to lead us to Messiah. My take is we are now under the Law of Christ. Does anyone know the OT verses Jeff is referring to about food, shelter, love etc?

@apologiastudios Pastor Jeff, I admire your apologetic approach, and am currently in a nasty storm (separates, divorcing) and am standing on God’s heart, promises, and Word; but it has not been easy and I’ve had failures. I am under constant spiritual attack because of this, as well as I have started a men’s ministry for men who stand for their marriages. Brother, I’d love a chance to have some dialogue with you.

My heart broke when I heard one of my favorite preachers and someone I tell people about and suggest to hear, speak on this subject as though he honestly seems slightly lost. There is nothing GOD - our heavenly father - allows us to divorce for any reason anymore than He would allow Christ to divorce from His Church. A genuine and deep study of the Word, the character of Christ, the very fact God uses very strong language in saying He HATES divorce and even that it was simply some things Moses came up with for 'a wicked generation...' etc. Divorce is no more allowable than Christ deciding to leave His people.

One of the few things I have ever heard you talk about I disagree with brother I have been preaching about divorce, broken families, for 25 years. if the Christian is a part of the choir they are with me, 999 out of 1,000 just don't care, hate me, think this sin is popular (divorce) and move on. Being someone abused by my father, we suffered that abuse, been abused by my wife who sexually abused my son. Only adultery is acceptable in this era of grace. We, the church, are supposed to intervene in abuse, trouble, etc. When there were people just, only, refusing to work, spreading gossip, hateful words, the correction was that they did not get to eat. How much more to protect the abused children, spouse, work to save marriage and honor it in all thing, correct the abuser, get the whole story --- The last great generation hated divorce, their good fruits spoke of them, this generations fruits of marital divorce leading to devastation and apostasy - spirtual divorce has brouht in my opinion suffering like the world has never seen -- a few of us are preaching repentance to this apostate and wicked church and country My mother was cheated on many times when my dad in homosexuality did so in the 80s. She would not give uo until he moved out. My wife tried to kill my boy when he was a baby, abused him emotionally, neglected him. I called on the church for help, got none. Only when she sexually molested him was it done for me. The Word of God is truth and all men liars. It is the Body of Christ's duty to help, take in the abused family, rebuke and protect them from the abuser. If they will not stop, treat them as publicans 0- and how do we do that? Copy Jesus, Paul. Pray for them but without access to the church, witness to them, preach repentance, The last faithful generation hated divorce like few 'Christians' do today and fought tooth and nail to keep marriages together. it was as it should be: shameful and horrid to behold the destruction of a family. And if you read any studies on divorce you will not find that the WWII generation was so in bondage and so much abuse was put up with. The COnrary, when marriage was sacred there was not as mich. Since 1952 and the free for all marraige laws, many studies have shown all manor of any ill you can name: mental, social, political, crime, et al have exponentially gone up: spouse abuse up %2,600, teen suicide up %150. Having been abused and seen my son abused I know my God and His Word is right. The church and society simply neglects the ones who need their help in these situations - not a permission to undo what God put together. Having been through my parents divorce and my wife's abuse - I know though most every day i wanted to leave and get me and my son away, I did the right thing protecting him and obeying the literal word of God on the subject in the whole counsel of God. Abuse is not good, in any part of marrige, not an excuse for divorce, and definately not an excuse for the church not to do its job as it did with the people who gossipped and were then not allowed to eat.

Great exposition starting out but I was stumped when Jeff got into the two camps stating Jesus was taking the side of shammai. I dont see or believe that at all. I dont see that He was suckered to take any side like they wanted Him to. But rather He flanked and exposed them with the truth. Jesus didnt lend himself to nor practice the foolishness and qaurreling attitudes of the religious. He always cut right through them. Its really suprising to me when learned men such as Jeff (he regularly references the Greek) do not seem to be aware of the fact that "apoluo" ("put away" in the stated passages; and occuring 170 times in the NT) and "apostasion" (bill of divorcment; occuring 3 times in NT) are two diff terms (they are not synonymous). The heading in your bible may read "divorce" but the stated passages have nothing to do with divorce but rather the wicked "putting away". To say that this (blantant) translation error has perpetuated great confusion and harm for so many is an understatement. Dont take any preachers word for it; and certainly not mine, (on this subject or any) but you must study the word for yourself.

jeff durbin. I love your videos but you really need to listen to Voddie Baucham's "the permanence view." Matthew is the only book that has an "exception clause." So with all the other commandments he says "you have heard it said that ... but i say ..." but when he gets to divorce Jesus says you got it right..? And people said it would be better not to marry (matthew 19) Why would they come to this conclusion if Jesus said divorce was just fine? The relationship between Christ and the church is represented between husband and wife. This is reason alone to renounce the idea of divorce.

i Love the Lord and want to follow his law, but let me ask you what do you do when the wife of your youth has put you aside because she doesn,t want you anymore? Am i suppose to stay single for the rest of my life? I wasn,t happy with our life situation so i came up with a plan to change how i lived and the pace of my life. I offered her this and she rejected me and my plan. I could not stay living the way i was and had to change.

So, when i first came across the Teachings of Headship, i was Discipling someone.. i leaned towards my having my Wife and Daughter's sins laid on me (not in †he same measure as CHRIST, The HEAD; my HEAD/†he Head's HEAD) but, Scripture Does Lay Out that Role, rather repeatedly.. how is it that a Wife's Sins will Not affect Her Head/Husband any more than the Husband's will affect His Body/Wife?

Who shall we follow, Moses? or Jesus? Of coarse we follow Jesus. Moses himself said Jesus would come and to hear him in all things. Jesus taught that to divorce and then to marry again is wrong except for fornication. And that don't mean 25 years later, that means when they first came together. Paul says the law, that same law Jesus said he didn't come to destroy, the law of God, bounds them together so long as they both shall live. If you think it's ok to divorce, then let me ask you where is the love in divorce? Where is the Charity (Charity seeketh not her own!) in divorce? Is not divorce what I want? Me I what I feel? But yet we are not our own, we are bought with a price! I feel, if you cannot agree with Jesus, He is not your Lord.

Jeff, it sounds like You claim that ANY relationship leading to marriage is ordained by God. What- did Satan go to sleep? He is not a believer and left this year after 23 years- our children have suffered greatly by his hands and with verbal/mental abuse- I was abused by him in all forms. Thank you Lord he walked out. Not a single negative comment; I think that's improbable.

I would advise the woman to live away from her husband or vice versa until things get better. Pray and fast for the Lord to work. I think that if after some time, nothing happens... it would have to be something God would seriously have to confirm that relationship. At the end of the day, I do believe Jesus restores relationships and he requires us to forgive one another.

MARRIAGE IS FOR LIFE --- NO DIVORCE ALLOWED Luke 16:18, Mark 10:2, Ro 7:2, 1 Cor 7:28, all of Old Testament

There is a fundamental problem with this idea of divorce and remarriage, and the problem is this. Marriage is a picture of Christ's marriage to His Church. Now every picture is an imperfect representation of the actuality, but Christ as the bridegroom is always ready to receive back His wife, as there is an unbreakable bond between Christ and His bride, the elect church. How can Christ go back to His bride if she's already remarried and the wife of another man? We read in Ephesians 5:31-32: "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church." If the husband and wife are one flesh, then the idea is that you can't break "one flesh", and neither can you break the union of Christ with His elect church. The second problem is that the Old Testament Scriptures never permitted a wife to divorce her husband, but only a husband to divorce his wife. The permissible reasons for divorce are one: sexual immorality... not abandonment, not cruelty, not a failure to provide. There is one reason given... sexual immorality (Deuteronomy 24:1.) Thirdly, if we are going to demand consistency, then we would expect to see a precept about remarriage in the Old Testament, Gospels and the New Testament (1 Corinthians 7 does not speak of remarriage), but there is nothing there about remarriage of either the "innocent" party or the guilty one. The speaker seems to suggest that the House of Hillel was the overwhelming view of Jewish society, but if that was the case, then why would the Pharisees even be asking Jesus about the controversy. Hillel had been deceased for a couple of decades when Jesus began Hi public ministry and Shammai only died in 30AD. Shammai had been the head of the Sanhedrin, and his views were only firmly rejected AFTER 70 AD with the Jewish revolt. So when Jesus is asked about the controversy, He is being asked about a real controversy where both sides had significant support in Jewish religious society. But what is Christ's response? He speaks of marriage as an unbreakable union which man cannot break. We read in Matthew 19:6 "Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." So if Jesus says "let NOT man put asunder", then why is the speaker here telling us that a spouse can divorce for a whole list of reasons? That's not the teaching of Christ here. In fact, what Christ is teaching is a rejection of both the schools of Hillel and Shammai which both permitted divorce (for various and differing reasons) and remarriage. While God certainly permitted men to divorce their wives for adultery "because of the hardness of their hearts", this still does not dissolve the marriage union. That is why Christ's teaching is that it is not only adultery to divorce your wives for unbiblical reasons, but "whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery" (Matthew 19:9.) Note the response of the Apostles who are astounded by Christ's teaching. Now why would they be astounded if Jesus was simply teaching one of the two prevailing and popular views of His day? They were astounded and said "If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry" because they rightly understood that His teaching was far stricter than either school of contemporary thought, and so strict that they questioned whether a man should even consider marriage if he could not remarrry when his wife failed him in some way. Paul in 1 Corinthians tells the believing spouse to be at peace if the unbeliever departs, but never tells them that they are free to remarry. To suggest otherwise is a gross misunderstanding of the text. Paul in Romans 7 says very clearly: 1Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Paul's teaching is the same as that of the Mosaic law, and of Christ, namely that a woman is bound to her husband until the death of either party. If she remarries while her husband is still alive (without any Pauline reservations here), then she is committing adultery. 1 Corinthians 7 is not teaching a new doctrine on remarriage, but simply saying that if an unbeliever refuses to honour the covenant of marriage and leaves their believing spouse, then it is not the fault of the believer. It is not teaching that they can simply "move on with their life" and remarry the next man they meet in church. This speaker's position while representing a more "conservative" side of evangelicalism is simply not Biblical and it's obvious why. It not only permits remarriage of the innocent party, but permits remarriage of the guilty party as well. Take this example: So a 50 year old husband commits adultery with his 20 year old assistant and his 50 year old believing wife divorces him. The husband remarries his assistant and then goes back to his ex-wife's church with his new 20 year old wife. The pastor asks if he has repented and the man says "yes pastor, what I did was wrong, but now I'm remarried." The pastor accepts that and the 50 year old and his 20 year old model wife sit are admitted as members and sit down in the same pew next Sunday with his 50 year old believing "ex-wife." How is that showing any respect to the covenant of marriage, or showing a fallen world that marriage is a "one flesh" union that man is not to put asunder?

I've been blessed by this sermon. Question: Let's say a spouse does forgive their spouse who committed adultery, but the law of the land is that adulterers should be put to death. Would the ruling authorities be acting unjustly if they did so (because the offended party forgave them)? Would similar principles apply to rape and murder? I'm a budding theonomist, so just trying to think through these things.

I was married before, my ex left me, I tried EVERYTHING that I could to keep her, but at the end she went to the loo at church and I never saw her again. The divorce papers came through on my birthday.. My question is, am I free of this or am I an adulterer?

Divorce is a sin and God hates divorce and anyone who encourages anyone to divorce is a false prophet and is going to hell. there is no right way to divorce. divorce is a sin period and there is no way round it.

I think Jeff makes a mistake here, and it is this. He is still rooting Jesus' teaching on divorce and remarriage in the Law of Moses. I believe Jesus actually takes his view on marriage from a previous point in the Old Testament, namely the Garden of Eden, God's covenant with Adam and Eve. This is really clear in Jesus' explanations. Paul does a similar thing when he deals with Male and female relationships. See 1Corinthians 11:8-9 1Timothy 2:13-14. So the key passages for Christians are Genesis 2 and 3 rather than Deuteronomy. Despite this, I still really like Jeff and appreciate his ministry. I hate some of the judgemental comments on here. This is simple. Divorce is not sin, unless someone does it wrong (such as if a spouse burns food). Deuteronomy 24:1-4 is the answer. Divorce is unfortunate. It is sin if the divorced spouse remarries the spouse they already divorced. That is an abomination. Divorce because of hardness of heart is unfortunate, but not sin. Yeshua perfectly explains this if you know the Torah. No one adds or subtracts from it and Yeshua said all of it stands. He was asked this because the Pharisaic law (Talmud) says you can have premeditated remarriage. That is adultery because a man deliberately divorces his wide because he finds an attractive woman and marries her and then divorces and remarry so he avoids adultery. Obviously that is adultery because he thought about it, and remarrying the same person is detestable.

If anyone else is going through the comments. Durbin discusses the moral law of God and Matthew 5 where contemporary Christian’s mainly misinterpret the Old Testament law with an alleged “higher morality” of Christ in Matthew 5.

Jesus, looking to Lev. says there is one cause for divorce. by this Law a man only can give a certificate (in the absense of stoning i.e. hardness of civic heart) for uncleaness. God forgive you if you make 3 + reasons out of one. Consider Samson who left his wife and came to find her and her family must have went to Westminster etc. but she was his wife. Paul nowere uses the word abandonment, he does suggest that IF 1, the unbeliever (in Christ) leaves the marriage (pagan 'divorce') they should not consider themselves bound. A man should marry a believing virgin who is subject and bound until his death. any creed or convention or legal theory that claims otherwise is trash.

no one is.....stuck......1 Corinthian 7.10-11 addresses this...10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Ok forgive my ignorance. I was married before I was a Christian, I was the guilty one in sin. We divorced. Can I get remarried now as a repentant believer?
