Is Doctor Who Bad At Series Finales?

Doctor Who series finales sometimes have a reputation for being underwhelming and cheap. But is this true? I looked at the series 1-4 finales of Doctor Who (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant) to see if the endings are as cheap as some people say.

I can't really recall the classic era ever even thinking in terms of a crescendo to a finale. For a time the last story was longer (with varied results) but it wasn't really a finale and I don't ever really remember being that concerned. It was just the end of a season/series. In the modern era the decision was obviously made to tailor the format to changed tastes. This brought us the pre-title mini-cliff hangers but it also seems they felt that some through continuity was necessary. The problem with that has been that it can only really involve a thin trail of bread crumbs then getting whacked round the head with a stale loaf right at the end. Not exactly ideal...
@amazingdisgrace1684
@amazingdisgrace1684 Күн бұрын
That's a hilarious but oddly fitting way to put it. Personally, I don't need the bread crumb approach. Especially after the results of this most recent finale. I will say, Susan Twist did a great job in her appearances and the pay-off for her specifically was OK. But the pattern of trying to build a "series arc" that really just amounts to "Look, here's the thing that keeps popping up or getting mentioned" is old. I think a series that has just completely self-contained stories across the board and a finale that has nothing to tie up or explain and is just a good story (or an attempt at one, not weighed down by a "series arc") would work fine for me. Or go all in and try a heavily serialized approach like Flux (though Flux is a very bad example imo). Just not the weird middle ground of having individual stories that also very minimally tease the "big pay-off".

Last of the Time Lords' resolution is a complete disaster, but I will NEVER forget the image of David Tennent T posing the Master into submission. It's just hilarious XD Better to be a memorably bad finale than a forgettable one like The Battle of Ranskor Av Kolos, or Name of the Doctor.
@Che1Angelius

The difference is that "Name of the doctor" isn't a finale, it is a set up for 50th and 11th regeneration. The Tim "Predator OC" Shaw episode was just terrible and stole from a poor brilliant scientist that wanted his people to be superior. Also, exterminate the rest of multiverse, to bring his people to glory.
@OkMakuTree
@OkMakuTree 3 ай бұрын
@@Che1Angelius Personally, that’s my complaint with Name of the Doctor, it isn’t satisfying as a standalone episode. The central storylines of series 7B, the Great Intelligence and Impossible Girl, receive weak resolutions. Destroying and restoring the Doctor’s timeline should be monumental in scale, but the impact is hardly felt. Meanwhile, the setup for Day and Time of the Doctor is nice, but both work as standalone episodes even if you skipped Name of the Doctor. Name of the Doctor is the finale to the 7B’s plots but it doesn’t feel remotely conclusive. Still, if you enjoyed it more power to you! It’s just not my cup of tea.

The problem with Moffat's run is that half his finales kind of aren't finales. The Wedding of River Song, The Name of the Doctor and The Doctor Falls don't really feel like finales. Wedding is fun but it leaves a lot unanswered, even series 5 questions are still unanswered. Name is the most obvious not a finale, it's mostly stuck setting up the next two specials rather than finishing out series 7. The Doctor Falls is basically a part two in a three part story but it also works well enough to end series 10 since most of the storylines finish, probably because it was originally going to be Moffat and Capaldi's final episode.
@caacrinolass3501
@caacrinolass3501 3 ай бұрын
There's a formula. Earth/Universe is under threat by one of the main 3 big enemies. The resolutions are as stated, cheap. To try and mitigate against that RTD always adds a cost. a character "dies" (but not really), or the Doctor regenerates so effectively dies. These things happen every single time. That works because people care about the characters, and only because people care about characters. Maybe because Murray Gold is on hand to tell you how to feel too. I'm not really disagreeing about characters and their value as RTD is very good at that but its just any story requiring a deus ex machina needs a rewrite.
@obiwankenobi687
@obiwankenobi687 3 ай бұрын
They’re never dues ex machinas though as they have whole entire series worth of build up, sometimes even multiple, they always come off the back of things that have previously been long set up. A dues ex machina would be if these things happen entirely out of nowhere, which they never do. Right until bi regeneration as nowadays RTD is too focused on messaging and diversity and keeps forgetting to write a plot first. But that’s a separate thing that’s going to plague his second era. His first era though is constructed in such a way that nothing that happens in a finale happens without any previous set up. Even the doctors hand that’s vital in series 4 gets passed around between the main show and the spin offs

All of RTD's worst traits - reliance on deus ex machina, justifying rabbits from hats with nonsensical wordplay and heavy expositionary dialogue with lashings of mawkishness (and not a little condescension) - were to the fore. Eight episodes, two bog standard but ok; two very good, and a great cliffhanger on the penultimate one. Then the finale - and it's an absolute shambles. You're probably working on a video as I write. I don't know whether "Tooth and Claw" is that forgettable. I always remember what jerks Rose and the Doctor are in it. (Now I'll rewatch and find out they're great, but that's where I am now.) I think the cybermen are scarier because they take you over and make you one of them; they are the zombies of the future. Daleks just kill you. That is also why they beat the cybermen here. Freema Agyeman also didn't like the unrequited love for Martha, so she thinks Martha deserves better too. RTD told her that everyone has experienced unrequited love, and he thought it was important. (That it was important to do with the only main companion on the show who black is certainly an issue. I cannot overstate some of the issues here.) However, I think the real problem is not her having feelings for the Doctor but the way he treats her, alternating between flirting and pushing her away and actually treating her quite badly at times. I don't think Martha is "pining" for the Doctor out of left field is what I'm saying. And people who love pining hate Martha pining. Not saying that's you, but Martha deserves better from the show AND the fans. Eh, I'm okay without major character death, thanks. Donna is the Doctor's real mother. Worse. The Doctor and Donna have a grown child together. The Doctor and Donna are Rose's father- and mother-in-law. Think about that one.
@markpostgate2551
@markpostgate2551 3 ай бұрын
Does he actually deliberately flirt with her? Most people who have experienced "unrequited love" have also experienced being flirted with by the object of their unrequited love, and that may well be what kindles it. But sometimes what appears to be flirting (i.e. is experienced as flirting) isn't. I mean one of the features of flirting is it is plausibly deniable which means in some ways it must resemble non-flirting enough that non-flirting can resemble flirting. And also flirting is kind of involuntary; we do it without thinking and certainly without foreplanning.

As for the cybermen, the cybermen and the daleks are two different kinds of supremacist; one sees every other being as inferior and not worthy to live as a result. The other sees every other being as inferior and therefore needing to be improved by conversion, like missionaries! They're assimulationists.
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 3 ай бұрын
@@markpostgate2551 I'd say he flirts with her and that he means it, but I didn't say anything about deliberation or foreplanning. I'm not sure what you're trying to argue here, as you want to know whether it was deliberate as if were I to say it's not, it wouldn't matter, and yet you say that flirting "is kind of involuntary." Also you note that "[m]ost people who have experienced 'unrequited love' have also experienced being flirted with by the object of their unrequited love," which leans into his having done it, I think. We would do well to look at the pulling in and pushing away in universe, but also, in a Doylist sense, what and why this occurred from the writers and, importantly, why great swathes of the audience blame Martha when her behavior is not odd at all under the circumstances. I'm sure the Doctor preferred to have plausible deniability, though, sure. But if you do a rewatch, keep it in mind, I guess, and see what you think then.

Its funny how what's her face shooting the master was " a bit out of nowhere, sure there were some hints, but it wouldve been better if she muttered a curse under her breath" but then "the details of one of the events being over the radio, how easy you could miss it, but its cool because that makes it realistic" Really highkights that for a lot of people, something feels out of nowhere because they don't have great social skills and can't read the emotions on subtle actors performances.

Yeah those are not quite the same thing chief. The "have her call him an asshole under her breath" thing was a joke, it was a reference to The Two Doctors where it looks like Peri calls the Doctor an asshole under her breath, which I showed as footage while saying that line. I also never said it was out of nowhere, I said *some people claim* it was out of nowhere, but it isn't really. The hints are quite subtle, but for such a major event that massively impacts the end of the episode, there maybe could've been a little bit more build-up. The news broadcast mentioning Sarah Jane's death is very different to Lucy shooting the Master. It's not a big focus of the episode, or even the scene, because it's not meant to be. It's the episode's way of subtly reminding you of Sarah Jane in the build-up to the finale, while also tying in with the overall plot of the episode. Also, the final sentence of your comment reeks of a superiority complex. I assure you I can "read the emotions", hence why I mentioned the subtle hints of Lucy's resentment towards the Master.

@@Cosmic_Nite oh my bad dude, I was referring to other people who make the same basic complaints that you were ripping on in the video, not you. I agreed with 99 percent of your video. My bad, I also listened to the video while working, so missed basically every video part of the video. In regards to the elitist comment about social behaviour, I myself am ADHD Asperger's, and had to spend many years not knowing social rules, or reading emotions very well, I ended up making a large effort for many years understanding that stuff, so even though I now feel as competent as a regular person in being able to read emotion, I still understand the mistakes people with poor social ability make, which was what my comment was trying to say, highlighting how people make this mistake saying things like that "come out of nowhere" (Which you said in your video in reference to other people making that complaint) when her body language in those final scenes tell you all you need to know that she was scared around the master. But like I used to be, like how many others are, can't pick up on that subtle stuff, I was just trying to provide an explanation.

As a Tinkerbell Jesus Doctor enjoyer, you do make a very good point about Murry Gold. It's just a very good score ok! To be fair I think I also like the Doctor coming down and hugging the struggling Master telling him he forgives him, and then a few moments later decides to keep him locked up with him till he reforms, just for the Master to get shot and refuse to regenerate out of petty spite. It's a fun mix of sweet and deeply fucked up. And tbf maybe I had just been keeping an eye on Lucy, but when she shot him I thought "Good for her!" Thematically it kind of counterpoints the Doctor's Messiahnic thing where humanity doesn't revolve around the Doctor's decisions. You can even say it ties into Martha's choice to leave him at the end.

My favourite finale is controversially dark water/death in heaven, but its probably because im just the biggest missy fan and she makes up for all the problems (i still dont emotionally connect with clara/danny after watching the episode like 6 times, i just cheer when missy mary poppinses in after the supposed to be emotional moment) also i dont count it as a cyberman story, because again, MISSY!!!

Creating the whoniverse The time war unfolded, paving the way for the Bad Wolf phenomenon. Bad Wolf's existence was crucial for the salvation of Gallifrey. The rescue of Gallifrey set in motion the formation of the cracks in time. These cracks extended the Doctor's life. The Doctor's prolonged life was necessary to persuade the first Doctor to regenerate. The encounter between the first and twelfth Doctors shaped 2-11's journey into becoming the twelfth. This makes the doctor a fixed event in time, leading to the TARDIS dropping the thirteenth Doctor to Earth. The thirteenth Doctor, now immortal with regenerative abilities, shares similarities with the Timeless Child. The Doctor's destiny inevitably leads to becoming the Timeless Child, with the TARDIS finding the Doctor's future after the Fugitive Doctor's salvation. Thirteen experiences this future out of sequence due to the TARDIS trading Doctors, saving the Fugitive Doctor from the Division, and finding Fugitive Doctor's TARDIS at the Ghost Monument. Thirteen, constructing her sonic screwdriver on Earth without the software from the previous sonic, remained unaware of the TARDIS's unknown trade, leading to her being oblivious to Missy and the Master's previous deaths and their crossing into different universes. The intricate layers of time and the Doctor's timeline continue to unfold in unexpected ways. Fugitive prevents her own Division-ruled future, and in doing so, alters the Doctor's timeline. Ruby Sunday, child of Bel and Vindor, left at Ruby Road, plays a crucial role in unwriting the Division and allowing a new Gallifrey to take its place. The Flux leads the Grand Serpent (Rassilon) to deep space, striking a deal with a trickster, eventually leading the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors to Donna. This results in the permanent return of the Doctor Donna, sparking the fifteenth Doctor's regeneration with memory loss. The Doctor Donna Hybrid stands in the ruins of the original Gallifrey as prophecy unfolds. The Fugitive, as the future Doctor, intersects with the fifteenth regeneration, guiding them to Ruby Road to understand the necessity of becoming the Timeless Child. This allows Ruby to be born, unwriting the Division and ensuring the continuation of the new universe. The sequence of events repeats, with Lulubell and Mrs. Flood being future versions of Ruby and the next parallel Doctor born in the subsequent timeline. The Whoniverse's origin traces back to William Hartnell's first Doctor meeting Peter Capaldi's twelfth Doctor. The Doctor's encounter with Professor Yana, who was revealed as the Master, was essential for guiding the Tenth Doctor to his regeneration. This regeneration led Clara to the Eleventh Doctor, playing a crucial role in the plan to save Gallifrey. The Eleventh Doctor's actions then set in motion a series of events, including leading the Twelfth Doctor to the trap street. The trap street was influenced by the Twelfth Doctor's familiar face from Pompeii, who granted Ashildr immortality. This immortality, in turn, attracted the attention of Rassilon, leading him to Earth and eventually becoming the Grand Serpent. The intricate web of connections showcases the interconnected nature of the Doctor's timeline, where each meeting and decision shape the course of events across time and space. Indeed, this rich tapestry of the Doctor's timeline opens up exciting possibilities for spinoffs and a vast "Whoniverse." A Fugitive's timeline exploring the Timeless Child's prequel could seamlessly link classic, reboot, and Whoniverse eras, providing a captivating journey through the Doctor's history. Ruby, the new Doctor in a new universe, offers a fresh perspective, retelling classic stories with alternative narratives on a modern budget, breathing new life into familiar tales. DrDonna on Earth working for UNIT adds another dynamic layer, blending the Doctor's adventures with the complexities of Earth's defense against extraterrestrial threats. The Original Doctor, with the ability to travel anywhere within the Whoniverse, provides an opportunity to explore uncharted territories and revisit iconic moments, creating a sense of continuity and nostalgia. These spinoffs promise to enrich the Doctor Who experience, offering fans diverse and interconnected stories across time, space, and different incarnations of the beloved Time Lord.

The RTD finales are the best because he always plans them out, the easter eggs are there throughout the series and the story is well paced and the material of the plot is used to its full potential. But Moffat's finales always feel underused and poorly paceded (except series 10) but they do feel epic. But Chibnall's finales have bad stories and are flat and dull.

Well, I think the finales of series 1, 4, 5, 9, 10 and 12 worked very well (with series 10 as the real highlight), while series 3, 6 and 11 fell flat. The rest of them; 2, 7, 8 and 13, were okay but not that great.

'Turn Left' is basically 'Sliding Doors', so really not that original. Also, where are the 'Reapers' from 'Father's Day'. They turned up for one man not being killed, but not for this ?
@Cosmic_Nite

That entire universe was created around Donna never meeting the Doctor. The alternate timeline of Turn Left is the *purpose* of the parallel universe, so nothing actually breaks in that specific timeline. That's why Donna stopping herself from turning right fixes the timeline. It creates a paradox and cuts off the new timeline at the root.

It might've done. Tbf, Donna's parallel universe was created by the Time Beetle, but yeah, there was likely at least one parallel universe where the events of Father's Day went differently. But that wasn't the focus of Father's Day as an episode. When an episode of Doctor Who happens, we don't spend the whole time focusing on what happened in any alternate universes. That's a different universe, not relevant to the plot we are experiencing in the actual episode.

So, IF you can just absorb the Heart of theTardis and wipe out the Daleks with a wave of your hand, as Rose did, why didn't the Timelords just do that in The Time War ? They had hundreds of Tardises, and almost all of thm more modern than The Tardis. It makes no sense.

The Doctor said that if a Time Lord did that, they'd become a vengeful God. Also, none of the Time Lords presumably knew how strong the heart of the TARDIS actually was, or what it could make them do.

I think the issue with the series finales really stems from the issue with the story arcs as a whole. For whatever reason, Doctor Who loves dropping constant reminders of a mystery without offering any clues or development until the final two episodes. That much buildup will inevitably lead to disappointment, particularly given how quickly things are resolved relative to the amount of time it takes to get you interested.
@amazingdisgrace1684
@amazingdisgrace1684 Күн бұрын
Bingo. RTD is particularly bad with that. Looking back, outside of Bad Wolf, which the characters do at least acknowledge (though only right before the finale), the "series arcs" aren't acknowledged at all before the finales. Torchwood and Saxon are probably the worst offenders, as they're literally just there to pop-up or get mentioned every now and again, but that's it. I don't think it's to the series detriment, but it's hardly well done. But then you have S5 and the cracks in time. I think Moffat's first attempt at a "series arc" was actually kind of well done, as it has little developments that play out across the series, we get more little tid-bits of what's actually going on. Except when that happens, it becomes all the weirder that The Doctor isn't more actively investigating. In the Weeping Angel two-parter, he discovers the exact date that the explosion causing the cracks happens. And it's the same day that he took Amy with him. What does he do? Nothing. In the Silurian two-parter, he discovers that whatever caused the explosion, the TARDIS is involved somehow. This is serious. What does he do? _Nothing._

Series 1 finale is brilliant, so is series 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. I don’t get the issue. Only series 11 is god awful. Even bad acting aside series 12 is a big grand finale, as is 13.

The Parting of the Ways works. Doomsday works. Last of the Time Lords works, but only just. Journey's End works. The End of Time works. The Big Bang doesn't work. The Wedding of River Song doesn't work. The Name of the Doctor doesn't really work, but it's a good and gripping romp, so it's fine. The Time of the Doctor doesn't work, but it's alright. Death in Heaven doesn't work. Hell Bent doesn't work at all. The Doctor Falls works. Twice Upon A Time is flawed but alright. Series 11 Finale doesn't work. Series 12 Finale doesn't work. Series 13 Finale doesn't really work, but compared to the previous two, it's fine. The Giggle works.
