What you are referencing are so called "Rods from God" . The idea of pure kinetic orbital bombardment was scrapped as there is no way to produce durable enough projectiles. The one idea was to have satellites with nuclear warheads on stand by up there to do the same but with nukes . One major problem is that with this we can isolate ourselves on this planet , by building an arms network on orbit and then fighting it and creating a cloud of debree which prevent any attempts to leave this planet.
