I would say that Drake makes hip hop, pop, and R&B "music". The reason he blew up at first was because he blended into all three of those genres on their own and at the same time. Most rappers traditionally only go down the rap lane (like Mos Def, which is also great) but Drake has gone down multiple lanes of music. Hold On, We’re Going Home is definitely R&B, Tuscan Leather is definitely rap, and Hotline Bling would be a great example of pop (but also R&B too). Artists don’t have to represent one genre of music.

What is happening is that you have people who don't know hip hop commenting on hip hop and get upset with someone who knows provides and opinion. Hip hip is NOT music. HIP HOP is the name of the culture. Culture develops a society. There are 5 elements of hip hop: breaking, emceeing, djinging, knowledge, and graffiti. Much of what is made now isn't hip hop. It's just an element. Rapping alone is no more hip hop as English alone being British culture. Drake is a rapper. That doesnt equate to hip hop.

When Mos Def was introduced as an artist ('94-'98), Hip Hop was in a different place. We believed that this "golden era" was the best that things would get for "our" art form. Others enjoyed it, but we assumed some rights to what it was and wasn't and how and where it could be consumed. Drake represents (to Yasiin and the culture) an elevation to heights that the backpackers couldn't even imagine. For those that are mad at Drake, they're really mad at what Hip Hop has become and how accessible it is to the masses. Drake is merely a prominent symbol for artists like Yasiin (who I still enjoy) losing their control of the definition and trajectory of the art form. I can empathize with his and others' frustration.

What’s frustrating for people who like me grew up in NY and people not understanding what hip hop was. It was an actual culture drake could never fit into the culture of hip hop. As an MC his job is to report the news the struggles and the realities of our people he has never done that. His music has never been disruptive or impactful on the community. His lyrics never made you sit back and ponder concepts that you never understood or have a hard time dealing with. His early music was much closer to hip hop than the last ten years. His first three years I could say he was quasi hip hop because that boy had bars, but it was also pop music which is cool. Hip hop has always had a mixture of pop. But drake went full pop over ten years ago. The man is a goat as a rapper pop artist. I’m not a fan of drake but I respect the shit out of him. But he isn’t a hip hop artist and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s been on top for 20 yrs and beat all the hip hop artiest longevity records. So he wins in the end regardless. He is in his own lane and will never be duplicated. I rather be in my own lane the. Follow those who came before me regardless of the respect I have for my predecessors. Last point drake is an artist and can’t be put into any category. The boy got range and that makes him extremely special in a good way. I hope he’s content and not stressing the dumb ass conversation.

Room for improvement was before Comeback Season. I'll say Drake is hip hop but he makes a lot of rap-pop songs. We will call him pop for hopping on different rap sounds but don't call none of the other rappers he raps with/whose sound he adopts pop. I'm not really a Drake fan anymore and have my critiques, but it just seems like folks just hate on him hard because he's so popular. Also, the pop/fun sounding element has always been in hip hop. To keep it G, all the OGs and pioneers weren't as conscious as we like to paint them.

I see Hip Hop as a place where people specifically love, respect and honor rap music as a whole. That’s understanding the history of it and trying to be as technically good as the people considered the greatest rappers. That’s something Kendrick Lamar, J Cole and Eminem talk about constantly. They actually learned from rappers who came before them and try to grow their skills on that level. Drake is too industry backed to truly be a Hip Hop artist. He also is surrounded by white CEO’s telling him what to do. He’s like a nice little student who gives the teacher presents every other week. Even Jay-Z had the balls to make songs that didn’t work on radio - he may be jaded now from his fame but he still has an understanding of the spirit of Hip Hop. Drake does what he’s supposed to do - but it’s all calculated for him to get even more popular. There is no real struggle, pain or raw passion in Drake’s work. Therefore I think he is a Pop artist. He’s a pop star and he should be proud of that - but he doesn’t have the energy of real Hip Hop. That’s why Kendrick has a problem with Drake though - because Drake thinks popularity equates to the kind of skill Kendrick has. I’m just hoping Drake knows he is a pop artist.

Well the interviewer definitely knew what she was doing with the Drake topic 😂. In all seriousness, I don’t think Mos Defs commentary was that out of line. It’s a pretty accurate assessment; Drake and his music are considered to be very approachable and digestible. People get offended when we consider something “pop” but it’s quite literally popular music. I think Drake is intelligent and knows how to capitalize on trends, and he doesn’t have a reason to prove himself as a true “hip hop artist” because, as Kev and Angel said, why would he? If it’s not financially broken then why fix it? I’m pretty indifferent to Drake tbh; I don’t love nor hate him and just enjoy him in a passive way. This isn’t about whether his music is “good”, rather can his music be considered hip hop. People do use pop as an insult in this context because somehow I guess you can’t necessarily be both? Because I would say that Drake is basically both

If you came up on non-comercialized hip-hop, no Drake is not hip-hop. If you came up on commercialized hip-hop, yes Drake is hip hop. Hip-Hop has been and always will be founded on black culture and the black experience. Like blues, hip hop came from the black experience in the hood in America. It was talking about your struggle in the hood, what you saw heard and lived. You can't recreate that experience in a lab (studio), you gotta live that. Because that experience couldn't be recreated, "they" came up with an experience they could recreate, repackage and sell to those who love hip-hop, the imagery and lifestyle of celebrity hip-hop. "I got women/men, I got money, designer everything, foreign cars, the best food and drink, and it's a party everywhere I go." That became the new hip-hop, the selling of that fantasy, not about the struggle of living in the hood, though if you listen to any rap artist from 10'- now, those who are from the hood always found their lyrics and platform on being from the hood.

Hip hop is conscious... it's living music- truth telling... progressive to a degree... aspirational... not city girls or city boys
