Hi Julie! I loved your video and your tips! I use a drop of glycerin mixed with the gouache, so it won't crumble when it dries.

I have a Folio palette for dried gouache as well as a Portable Painter Classic palette for gouache. I love them both. I really like using dried gouache over fresh for the same reasons you mentioned… I hate wasting paint if I squeeze out too much and I don’t like the additional time it takes to get ready if you need to select all your paints from the tube each session. Lovely video!

I love dried gouache. I use Holbein, W&N, and Schmincke. To prevent it from cracking or crumbling I use honey, but I read that Qor WC medium or W&N Watercolor medium works better and does not dry sticky.

I very much prefer the dried gouache format. 😊 No problems with opacity when using professional grade gouache.

Thank you for the video! I think I will try gouache this way as I have found the workflow of gouache coming from watercolor quite strange. The water content is unpredictable, the value when dry changes and it never seems to be the texture I expect when putting it on the page. The mat quality is nice and I like how it shows brushstrokes but blending out shadows without mixing every color for the transition is weirdly difficult. The previous layers pigment always seems to lift off no matter how dry the layer is.

I've used a dried gouache pallet for my calligraphy and illumination projects for decades and have never experienced problems. The only time I experienced a failed project was when I used the gouache fresh out of the tube. It was a red paint and the binder had partially separated in the tube. The paint never, ever dried and I had to throw the project away and start over. Ever since then, I ALWAYS dry the pallet first.

Hi Julie! I have tried both dried gouache and wet gouache straight from the tube, but my experience with them depends on the brand I am using. For Daniel Smith, I have no issue using them dried as the colours still come out opaque/semi-opaque, creamy and they dry/cure again really well after. I can't say the same however for my Holbein gouache, as after a few sessions with them outdoors, they started crumbling very quickly even after adding glycerine in it. So what I do now is carry a tube of white gouache or buff titanium with me and just use the others dried. Otherwise, always wanted the try the LeFranc Bourgeois gouache but they only have the academy and the kids range available in my country.

I've painted with gouache straight from the tube and after it's dry - I dislike using gouache straight from the tube because it is too thick - I have painted some pictures that I like with it when I first started using it, but it's like trying to paint with acrylic paint that has not been watered down. It's very difficult to get detail with it. I've also found that you can reactive it once it's dry because it just sits on top of the paper if it's thick and I always worry that I will ruin a painting by getting it wet again. Recently, I used it like watercolour and I very much prefer the results and it doesn't reactivate if you get it wet again once it's dried into the paper. Of course, if you use it like watercolour, you need to use watercolour paper, but I prefer using it that way.

Hi Julie. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). I'm a wildlife & nature artist, mainly in watercolor and dry mediums, but recently I started using Gouache (traditional one, not acrylic) and I had the same doubts as you have... Wet right from the tube? (Since I'm not sure yet, this is what I've doing so far for each painting but it's not practical for me). Should I use instead an airtight palette? (I see other artists use them and it feels a lot of work to jeep the Gouache creamy whilst avoiding mold build up - I HATE to waste paint!) Or... should I use a dry palette like for watercolors? (this I think is the most convenient and stress free approach but will I loose paint consistency and its opacity?). I've watched Sarah Burns using it dry on plein air and it seems to work well for sketches and I just found you on KZfaq and saw this video which is exactly focusing on my concerns. I have W&N Designers (Artist grade) Gouache so I don't know if there will be a difference with how the paint behaves. What do you think about dry Gouache? I mean... have you've been able to try it outside? Does it perform normally? I have started to do some Urban Sketching as well with watercolors but I want to be able to take 2 travel palettes, one for Gouache too, in order to increase my artistic options. Sorry for such a long message and I hope you can provide some additional feedback based on your experience. As for most artists... I have a small budget and can't afford to make many mistakes when finding a solution to a problem and buying the necessary materials (if you know what I mean). that palette is nice, but another artist on youtube shared her travel palettes and when she opened her art toolkit palette the metal pans inside had rusted. she said that happens with that palette. what is your experience up until now?
