Started about 13 years ago, probably trained for a total of 10 years and averaged 3 times a week. I am a brown belt and will probably remain so for another 5 years. The most important thing for me is to keep improving and remain active.

40 year old, 9 month white belt (started Jan this year at 39) here with zero prior experience in any martial arts. I used to think there'd be some sort of epiphany that comes with belt promotion but then I thought about those other age milestones: 16, 18, 21, 30, 40... At no point was there some magical moment that I instantly realized more about life than the day prior. Life, similar to gaining experience in bjj, is the culmination of everything learned previously. And hopefully we've surrounded ourselves with people, training partners, instructors, etc to be the best we can be on and off the mats.

I agree break away from toxic people student or instructor 🤙🏻never compromise yourself over a belt stay true to yourself ☝️

When i got my black belt it didnt change any of my games. My xbox still worked the same 🤷

What a journey it must have been. Your message reminds me of The Four Agreements. It's hard to do, but the more you can be impeccable with your word, the more you can just be present, at peace.

I think it would only come off as pretentious if youre not in a martial arts setting. Introducing yourself as a bjj black belt in the start of a video only makes sense as a presentation of your credentials. If you introduced yourself to your car salesman as a black belt that would be a bit odd.

Hey Ryan, I recently purchased the monthly subscription for the white to blue belt course and was surprised by the amount of content there is. So I would like to know what is a realistic timeline to be proficient with this? Also I recently purchased a Fairtex grapple dummy as I don't have any training partners since I just joined a BJJ school. Is a grapple dummy good enough to get me through this course?

Depends on you, but you could realistically through white to blue in 6 mos to a year. I’m not a fan of grappling dummies. Maybe for offense, but they a solid not work for defense and self defense.

Heh, those Gracies can SAY they respect other arts but their ACTIONS scream that they do not. All the dojo storming and stuff that they did back in the day was anything but respectful.

@@KamaJiuJitsu sure. Out of all the ways they could chose to market things they chose the one that was as disrespectful as they could possibly be to other arts. I certainly benefit from what they did to grow the sport, but that doesn't mean we need to go in and white wash what they did after the fact.
