I'm 28 years old and seriously considering going back to school to study engineering. I feel old and embarrassed about starting all over again but the business degree I got when I was 22 has proved to be useless and unfulfilling. Not to mention drowned me in student debt. Anyway, thank you for this video and I hope everyone is having a good day

Engineering is a beat down. You really start to get a feeling that math and problem solving are your life and that you'll have to know so many different things to be successful. You can't learn everything and people forget things over time so what is working like as an engineer? Extremely specialized team oriented tasks? Working in the real world is scarier than school to me, especially with people's lives at risk potentially.
@RiverTechJess
@RiverTechJess 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven! Real life engineering is nothing like school. Ya I know what you mean, we get beat down with so much work and info that it's impossible to remember. But real world companies love engineers because of the way we've been trained. We're problem solvers and we're adaptable; mold to our environment to solve a problem. So employers aren't hiring you for all of your knowledge (although basic mathamatical/physics problem solving skills are necessary and should be intuitive) they're hiring you for your problem solving ability. But, there are more specialized teams that work on specific tasks. For example, I start a job in March and I'm going to be working on a very specific problem in the "thermoacoustics-combustion" group and I was hired for my specific skill set:)

Honestly, the most difficult part of the job is to deal with people that do not understand what you are doing. As for the technical aspects, most of the times, they are quite simple. Complex stuffs are generally too expensive and customers are not willing to pay! That said, I am crazy enough that to get some challenge I left my company job to start a PhD in telecommunications.

Late comment but I so agree with you on "if you don't get it then keep trying until you get it" mentality. I did jewelery design in college, and in the beginning I sucked at soldering. I just did not get it and couldn't get projects done on time. But then I practiced and practiced until I became really good and started enjoy doing it. By the end of the year I was soldering really intricate designs and made a ring with over 50 solder joints on it.
@abdulkadirbilgin383
@abdulkadirbilgin383 8 ай бұрын
That's fantastic to hear! It's a great example of how persistence and practice can lead to significant improvement and mastery of a skill. Soldering can be a challenging technique to learn, but by dedicating yourself to practice and not giving up, you were able to overcome the initial difficulties and achieve impressive results. The "keep trying until you get it" mentality is indeed valuable in many aspects of life. It's easy to become discouraged when faced with challenges or when we don't immediately excel at something. However, embracing a growth mindset and persevering through difficulties can lead to tremendous personal growth and the development of new abilities. Your experience with jewelry design and soldering serves as a reminder that progress often comes with time and effort. It's inspiring to see how your dedication paid off, enabling you to create intricate designs and accomplish your goals in the field. I hope you continue to enjoy your journey in jewelry design and find fulfillment in further honing your skills.

You are truly an inspiration to me. I am on my second year of university in Italy, modern languages, and I’ve realized that it isn’t my path. Although I am “built” for languages, because I naturally understand the mechanism behind a language - while others may need a bit more - I still feel like it is not my field. I aim to finish this year, and hopefully start all over with engineering. At 21 yo. Maybe I am being too “romantic” but I adore the idea that engineering can give you an unique insight of our world and how we can make it a better place. I mean, I am amazed and I often find myself thinking “Wow, how this has been made? How it works?”. The only reason I never had the courage to peruse engineering is the fact that I always underestimated myself and my value. Wish me luck on my future journey, cause I decided to go for mechanical engineering! Oh, and thanks for making such a USEFUL channel, and showing that women can be as good as men in every single field!

I'm so happy that you've gotten the courage to pursue something that you are passionate about:) I also did not consider engineering when I first started because I didn't think I was smart enough. But that's exactly why I started this channel. To break this myth and show that you don't need to be a genius! Also don't worry about your age, you have you entire life to work and your entire life to study. It's all about the journey so just enjoy it as much as you can:) Thank you so so much for your kind words and good luck with your transition from one field to another!:D

I have never related to a post so much lol! I too have always believed that I am built for language/ communication or the other “soft sciences” but I have always been curious as to why things work the way they do. I am also very passionate about education and the environment so I’m looking to blend that into engineering. And up until recently I haven’t heard of people like you and I who are “built” the way we are. I hope all goes well with your journey Elena!

Ive always been a problem solver. Ive also been extremely musical. I knew that I wanted to do music but I had an interest in engineering. So I perused my Engineering degree.(still unemployed for over 10 years.. working for FEDEX though), I dont know what to say really engineering can be very difficult. I dont think that If your not a technical person that it would be an industry to just choose to do. Not to discourage someone from it, because you are going to work hard, REALLY hard. But if you have the love for It , then try it. When I started my freshmen class there were a bunch of us that were engineering students. after the soph year like 75% them all left school or switched into business or other majors. I wasnt one of them because I wanted to accomplish my goal.

Yes, everybody can learn everything, under the right circumstances: 1) stable motivation and priorization with a strong will to learn is needed even when learning consumes more time and/or money as expected. 2) Good learning circumstances: amount of time, information about concepts and details, material for applying with experiments and exercises - material requires access to it or money to buy it. 3) Application of learned lessons and doing something is very important from some point when more things getting more complicated. 4) If learning circumstances change any learning project can slow down - e.g. reduced available time, income.

Hey ! I like your content, and I'd like to have your opinion on my situation : I'm currently studying for a business degree but originally my first choice was physics, which I quickly abandoned mainly because of my low math-skills. But now I'm getting better and better at math again (I was very good at math some years ago, and then started sucking at it at some point) and I'm now considering going back to a more STEM field. Moreover, I recently got interested in programming and it's a lot of fun. And anything related to space and rockets is really my biggest turn on since I was a child. Even though I know the math in STEM fields will probably be a lot harder than in a business one. I think software and aerospace engineering would be the 2 most likely to interest me. But damn I often hear that only geniuses can succeed in aerospace engineering (like, that's literally rocket science) and to some extent I still doubt of my capacities so I don't really know... Moreover, the job market in the aerospace industry doesn't look that great, at least for now and the next years. So what's your take on all that, is aerospace engineering really that hard ? PS : English isn't my first language either but I hope you understood everything ;)

Hey Extremo7! That's a great question. First of all, that's awesome that you wanna be a rocket scientist (like me haha). I mean, of course engineering is hard (like I said in the video) but you dont have to be a genius at all!! And I really really hate how society acts like you have to be a genius. I think it's just nerds that want to feel special so they "pretend" like it's so hard so that they seem like geniuses. If you thinks its something you really wanna do then go for it! I also talked about this on a podcast I was interviewed for if you're interested: itpd.mprw.co.uk/feed/podcast/

I was browsing your video and found it fascinating. I find it interesting that as an engineer such as yourself thinks history is hard. I think history was easy since I have a bachelors in it. Anyway, I stumbled on your video because I have this "what-if" scenario of if I could actually do engineering. I get math concepts, and some are easier to understand than others. But I also thought I might not be that intelligent enough to do engineering. Anyway, thanks for the video.

My parents wanted me to be a dr as i always did good with sciences but i didn't see my self in it, i left college for 2 yrs trying to find what i really want. Not until later i decided i wanna be an engineer and i love it. Wish you best of luck dr.

Same here, I am terrible in essay writing even in my 1st language. Solving a differential equations are far easier for me than memorizing the biology terminologies and history. I still remember my 11th grad exams. I studied biology 100 times more than physic and maths. It's totally depends on person's interest. Calculus and electrodynamics are favourite subjects,so electrical engineering is not that hard for me. But still there are some subject which are difficult for most of people like analoge system design, computer architecture. eg. In in final lab exam , no one was able to get correct output from my class. So, engineering is difficult. But if you are ready to challenge your self then every thing is achievable.

One thing that’s obviously extremely important in engineering is mathematics. I’m a reasonably intelligent individual but I don’t have the aptitude for mathematics. I can’t even do long division so that shows just how inept I am at math.

Hey Sangil! I know it sucks but that's also what I did. I would spend hours on problems until i really understood them and was able to solve them. The more you do, the faster you get. Maybe there is a more efficient way, I'm not sure but with this method I got really good grades in school.

hey bodybuilding lover, ya I had this problem once, but I ended up getting grouped up with the worst people on the planet. So bad that I vowed never to do a group project again (and that's why i decided to do research instead of a final-year project). But maybe I was expecting too much from my group. I would say that the number 1 thing is communication. Just be sure to really communicate with the group, make sure all of the tasks are deligated and make sure everyone is finishing their part on time. I know it's tough, but it's a fact of life and also we're going to need to get used to it in the real engineering world:)

There are impossible problems in engineering, mostly to do with resource allocation (budget and scheduling). Say you have a project that you estimate will take about 30 hours, and your boss only allocates 17 hours to you. Now it is impossible for you to complete the project on schedule. Sometimes you get people defining conflicting project requirements (managers or customers) because they do not understand the engineering tradeoffs involved. (Ex. Filter Noise vs Bandwidth) And some people will set you up to fail deliberately because they want to use you as a scapegoat, just dump their problems on you, or because they are threatened by you and want to see you crash and burn.
@RiverTechJess
@RiverTechJess 6 жыл бұрын

@alexv5581
@alexv5581 5 жыл бұрын
You answered your own question. You said you don't like problem solving but like to help people. Why not go in to medicine? Engineers and scientists do one thing in common; solve problems. Both work together and need each other. The problem with pursuing something you are not really interested in is you won't put that much effort in to it and you are going up against nerds who get brain orgasms talking about thermodynamics like me lol. What will you tell your future employer if he or she asks you why you wanted to be an engineer? I would rather hire a passionate, high work ethic person than somebody that just wanted to get by in university.

I also prefer engineering to biology. Even though I'm passionate about biology, and never thought I'd eventually get into engineering, I realized in high school that I can't deal with the way they teach biology. I can memorize paragraphs of information, but find it boring and pointless. I'm now in comp eng, I'm not passionate about it, but I'm getting through. It was the easier option that was still safe. I definitely prefer learning methods to solve problems than having to memorize a lot of information.
