From smartphones to EVs to backup power, lithium-ion batteries run much of our modern world. But we’ve got a big problem on our hands when these energy reservoirs wear out, especially in a future where electric vehicles are the norm. Today we're talking to experts to explore the current state of electric car battery recycling. We'll learn how it’s done and why it's so important, and we’ll learn all recycling isn't necessarily good for the environment.

Lead acid batteries in ICE cars are recycled at 99%. We don't have a lot of lead mines all over the place for that reason and some of the lead in your battery may have been mined in the 1950s. If we can do that we can recycle other types of batteries too. EV batteries last a long time but the cars will wear out or become undesirable so in time there will be some. The other issue is they are extremely valuable for reuse even when they are not good enough for cars. Energy storage applications can use even a degraded car battery and get a LOT of extra use of it and unlike DC fast charging car you don't need a lot of thermal management when it's being slowly charged by solar. The risk for recyclers is that a new type of battery may take over and automakers won't be using the type of batteries they do now.

Lead battery recycling is one of the most polluting industries in the world - its all done with smelting. We can do much better with lithium ion, and not get locked into dirty methods

I have been part of a team developing recycling methods. Retrieve/Toxco has been processing Li ion batteries for a long time. They sell the black mass to smelters and so it goes into alloys. At least it is being used. It is not a great method but it is recycling that has already been happening. Cirba Solutions owns that business now. Making metal products through electroplating is not really producing the precursor chemicals, which are salts. There are ways to use electrochemistry in the dissolution step to greatly reduce chemical use. LFP type batteries are a tricky deal as there are not many valuable metals in them, they will be waste management. Generally the batteries of the future can change with new discoveries and add a layer of uncertainty to business plans.

The short answer is Yes! Once my 10 year old EV battery runs its life propelling my car (Another 5 years), it will then have a useful life of maybe 5-7 years as stationary storage. That could be 20 years or more before it gets recycled. That kind of lifecycle is unheard of, and any argument that EVs are more energy or material intensive than ICE is completely refuted. After the battery is done, my electric motor will likely still have plenty of life in it, and I will decide then if I want to replace the battery pack and have a virtually new car with more range than the day it was new - (energy density has improved consistently since the car was new in 2014). This amazing lifecycle will all take place within a very small geographic area. The recycling plant is right here in my city. The recycled materials will go to a new battery plant being built and another just announced a few hours down the highway. They will supply batteries to new EV manufacturing plants close by, who will sell their vehicles to people like me a few hours back up the same highway. Or we can keep burning oil, warming the planet and poisoning the air we all breath.

There will be many types of batteries in the future so not all of them will use the same materials.

Electric vehicles are a good chance to create a highly recyclable vehicle. Lithium recycling. Plastic recycling to make interior materials, other metals recycling...etc. I want to invest in Lithium recycling stocks.

Can a single 3D printed battery pack, with all its cells casings, be printed in one piece? Would make the assembly a bit faster /easier?

I would be cautious. A processor will need a source of material and I think some vertical integration is already established ( collectors partnered with processors and makers like the Redwood-Tesla example). There are also technology developing companies, they will have to sell tech to the processors. Based on all the literature and methods out there now it would be hard to pick the ultimate winners. This is an international game as well.

Well, we would have to know who you consider to be a "good authority" to evaluate that. KZfaq videos can be a reliable source of information but many are propaganda tools. Some poorly made and highly stressed EV batteries could fail (or not meet spec) early. The early production Nissan Leaf exemplified this. But don't extrapolate that to all EV batteries or battery tech in general. The vast majority perform as advertised right now and the technology is improving, literally, every single day.
