I had an inguinal hernia for 17 years, and I did light weight training and hiking without complications. It was a minor discomfort, and I was always pushing it in to relieve any stress. I eventually got it fixed with a mesh (incision) at age 51, and it hasn't been a problem since. I waited 6 weeks after surgery before doing any exercise, then proceeded carefully until I was confident it was secure.

Love this thanks exercise to health. Interesting to hear about the single upward tricep row on the bench as I feel this is what caused my inguinal hernia. Confidence is now the main barrier for lifting again with me, 6 weeks is now the aim to return to the gym (currently on week 3 after open surgery). Thanks again guys!!!

Very informative. Thank you so very much. I’ll be 76 in about 6 weeks. I’ve been training with weights since I was about 13 and to this day, I’m always seeking slight progressive overload. About 10 years ago, I developed an inguinal hernia. I would rather not undergo surgery because I couldn’t go 3 months without weight training and the surgery doesn’t always permanently correct the problem. At my age, I would lose a lot of muscle mass that I’ve worked so hard to preserve. Consequently, each workout is like a round of Russian Roulette!!

A hernia shouldn't stop you from doing most things. Just be more aware of what can make it worse if you're lifting too heavy for example.

Since I was diagnosed with my inguinal hernia, I've stopped doing heavy squats and crunches. I do cable pulls to either side, and stop if I feel any pain in that area. I also do bench presses, being careful not to activate my core too much, and arm exercises including dumbbell curls, tricep extensions, and overhead presses.

I noticed you mentioned the mesh. Most of the literature I've read says that the mesh is the standard procedure for a hernia these days, but that having a foreign body in your body is dangerous and many of them cause a problem or get infected. The alternative was the old style surgical fix which is still done by the Cleveland Clinic who are touted as experts in this surgery. Any comment on that, pro or con?
@ExerciseForHealth

Couldn't comment on that as it's more of a medical question and I only specialise in exercise advice, not surgical treatment. Good that you're researching it though.

I've last week been diagnosed with hernia in my upper left abdomen, which started as what felt like a side strain in late 2019 which didn't go away and the minor ache would come and go, now in recent months I've noticed a hard bump has appeared which isnt tender to touch or push, but am aware it's there sometimes with a momentary ache which radiates slightly and maybe a slight pulling feeling. It doesn't bother me too much and I can carry on with my daily activities, including some walking and jogging,just being a tad careful of putting any strenuous strain on the area. So the excercise given in the video could be of benefit to me. Thanks.

is it possible to build connective tissue over the hole, so the inguinal hernia wont be healed, but wont be causing issues anymore? i have a 8mm hernia or another doctor called it weak groin, when he couldnt find the hole. also no visible bulg, since the muscles down there have no hole yet. but i also learned that the hole doesnt repair itself, so im curious, if there are other ways to reduce the pain, the (probably) inflammation caused from the tissue being squeezed slightly ever down there, especially when doing lots of sports, like i am in my late 20s. also my doctor advised me against a surgery with mesh. he told me basically i should think about if i want a lifelong plastic piece in my body.

Anything twisting, like running and swimming with kicking I have ruled out cuz I feel slight pain. I do not feel any pain biking or swimming with a float buoy between my legs. The initial Dr. said it is ok to continue activity that is tolerable. What do you think? Should I be more cautious? I feel I could get the injuries to heal with pt and staying away from twisting activities.

Idk what to change I am calling doctors tomorrow and we will se it is not big small only and I think not my intestines but only fat is coming out and it is forming a little bump. I did exercise today no problem but no core, I really needed to strengthen my core now idk should I do core at all.

I just caught an inguinal hernia; most of the information you get out here is so pre-canned and from a doctor basically telling you only to do walking, swimming, yoga, and cycling. However, different instances may or may not apply, and KZfaq really gives you a bunch of whatever info just for "content". I got my inguinal hernia playing Top Golf 3 weeks ago, and I thought I pulled a muscle or strained my groin and didn't think anything of it. I worked out the next day doing legs (deadlifts, squats, etc), and two days later, I did chest, and I just felt sore in my groin thinking it was because of the Top Golf. After the shower, it's when I noticed the bulge, at first, I had no clue what it was, after extensive googling. I figured out it was the inguinal hernia. I watched dozens of videos, and most of them I found very bad and you have to piece things together yourself based on your condition. This conclusion works for me until I get my surgery in about 6 weeks. I had the hernia for about 3 weeks, and it was protruding but would reduce after I lay down. I did some of the exercises I found online from those that claimed you can self-heal the hernia, but merely because it made some sense to me, which were the stomach vacuums, I would retract and maybe strengthen some so the bulge would stay small. The main thing is to keep pressure off the hernia sucking in your stomach, I believe, pushes your insides back some. I purchased a hernia belt that I put on laying down when the hernia is completely back inside which seems to keep it in place and allows me to do normal things. I now lift weights after I laid off for a some days to see how it would affect me and I made modifications legs - I don't do anything that puts pressure on my abdominals like squats, deadlifts, etc, I mainly do isolated machine stuff like standing leg curls for one leg at a time which allows me to focus on the leg and reduce my pressure, I do leg extensions and reduce the weight so I don't strain. Upper body I do lat pull downs (lighter weight and focus on breathing and that the pull is coming from my back), I do seated rows where you have that pad in your chest so the pull comes from your arms and back and you keep pressure off you abs. I do bench presses and keep it light so there is no squeezing or straining with my abs, for inclines I opted for the hammer strength to have more control. Biceps I do the seated curls because the weight stays on your arms. Shoulders I use machines now, nothing that puts weight over my head and requires the core to stabilize. What I pay attention to is staying off anything that tightens your core and requires you to strain, squeeze and/or push. If you can do exercises that allows you relax your core and focus on the body parts you are working out, it works for me. I do lots of walking on inclines but no running to avoid the impact. I do stomach vaccums to alleviate some of the discomfort and make sure I wear the belt. I am restricted for a bit but at least I can still focus on my gym routine with modifications and of course use lighter weights and more reps. But again what works for me may not work for you because your hernia may be very different than mine. You just have to listen to your body and experiment with things that you feel is best for you. But if you take general advice all you can do is walking and swimming and yoga and that's not a solution for some of us.

Did you have surgery yet? I got an umbilical hernia. Not sure what caused it. Didn’t feel anything. Just looked at my stomach and noticed a bulge that I can push in. I got an appointment to get it checked out next week, but have still been lifting with similar modifications to my training. I just hit legs today and although I’m not lifting as heavy as before, I still got a great workout. Been using my belt a belt more and avoiding any deadlifts. Really being mindful of using the targeted muscle rather than horsing the weight up. Wonder if I should wait on the surgery or get it done soon. I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t get bigger, but always a chance it could get bigger and start causing pain.

It's worth getting it checked, as it is possible to get a new hernia in/ near the location of the repaired one, so if he is experiencing pain, best to get it checked out by his doctor.

@ExerciseForHealth Жыл бұрын
It's difficult for me to advise as I can't assess you and I don't know which muscle you're referring to (rectus abdominus/ tranverse abdominus/ internal oblique/ external oblique etc). If it was a long time ago, it's probably healed but not properly (scar tissue left). Speak to a physical therapist who may be able to help you following an individual assessment, but generally gentle strengthening of the affected muscles allowing blood flow to the area will help.

It might be OK if your hernia isn't causing you any problems (pain etc). The high impact nature of jogging/ running shouldn't affect it too much, it's more of the internal pressure build up (i.e. straining) that can make it worse.

Hi. I have a very small inguinal hernia. My doctor told me to do ab exercises as much as possible in order to strenghten the core. However, I have read in many places that ab exercises can actually worsen this condition. Do you have any advise regarding this?
@lamarinaelche
@lamarinaelche 9 ай бұрын
I have the same, and been told NOT to engage in any exercise that increases the abdominal cavity pressure, which in turn, may aggravate or worsen the extent of your small hernia. So we’re talking Planks, Squats , abdominal stretches and basic core where the AB’s are contracted , increasing abdominal pressure which may push an inguinal hernia further through the muscle wall. I’m here to find clear information as to exactly what strengthening exercises are safe to perform around an inguinal hernia. Still looking!
@ExerciseForHealth
@ExerciseForHealth 9 ай бұрын
Don't do any exercises that contract the main abdominal muscles on the front of the stomach such as sit ups/ crunches/ plank/ ab roller etc. This will increase intra abdominal pressure and potentially make the hernia worse. Deep abdominal exercises such as a side lying lower abdomen gentle pull (drawing lower abdomen below belly button about 1-2 inches towards the spine) will be beneficial though as this will target the corset like TA muscle.
@lamarinaelche
@lamarinaelche 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for your helpful comment @Exercise For Health. Will try that as I’m sleeping on my left side anyway, and prefer the recovery position as I think the pressure is off the abdominal wall that way . I do a lot of walking and have got into the habit of drawing my abdominal muscle up and in under gentle tension for mist of the walk. Would you say it’s aggravating my hernia & may have even exacerbated it ? I’ve just got so used keeping my abs drawn in !
