Do you think you'll make a video about FF X? Perhaps X-2 as well? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. I, for one, never got into X-2. The contrast was too jarring back then, Yuna's 180 degree character shift didn't fit, and then there's the uhm... odd parts about the game. Like certain scenes with Leblanc (?), Brother's attitude towards Yuna. Anyway, good work on these videos so far

I just beat it in 2023 and I don’t regret it. As a kid I’d watched my brother play but was too young to comprehend what was going on as I was like 5yrs old. I decided to play this before the remake because I wanted to play it through the eyes of my older brother. And completing it makes me feel so proud to have played his favorite game. I’m amazed by the amount of heart and dedication that was put into making this game. There’s so much charm, emotion, and I can genuinely say this is one of the best games I have ever played in my life. I’m so happy to have played this version. Yea the new one has voice acting, but reading the text in this version allowed me to really connect and think with my mind as if I was really with the characters. The 2d background with 3d characters was a site to look at and when playing it. Gorgeous looking game. I think of how technology is now with modern graphics, but the effort and artwork that went into this with the music and story is just unbelievable to me. To think someone could make such a masterpiece just makes me happy. And for anyone who has played or yet to play, I just would like to say you will not be disappointed! This version over the remake and I have yet to play the remake. This game came out in 1997 and there will be nothing ever like this!

Nice take on things. The other benefit is you can now comprehend the „remake“ actually being a time travel sequel and the term „remake“ is a narrative subtitle :) and the OG FFVII being canon with its story getting remade in a new timeline. Have fun with rebirth! Looking forward to it myself.

Man I love FF7 so much. I remember coming home from high school in the late 90’s I couldn’t wait to play more FF7. I’m sitting here a 43 year old man, and I still play FF7. This time though, I bought durning the Steam sale. I modded it just a little to clean up the images. It looks pretty good for a ps1 game.

Cloud struggling with his identity was life-changing for me as I battled with depression and suicide at the time. Albeit he is not a real person, he gave me hope I could find myself too. And like Cloud, it was through the help of others that was the key. The og graphics are charming, even after all this time it's fun to pick up and play even if it's just to run around the Gold Saucer for the mini-games.

I was also obsessed with this game from 1997 - 1999. I was 11 yrs old when it first came out. I still remember the story, graphics, mature themes etc. made a huge impression that has never been surpassed for me. I didnt have internet at the time, so being stuck for days or weeks was no exception. The massive scope of the game was unlike anything I had ever seen. It made Zelda: OOT seem so childish and short to me. FF8 was such a massive disappointment that it made me turn away from the franchise. Havent played FF7 ever since the old days.

I first played FFVII in 2011 and even then I knew it was the best thing I'd ever touched. I remember watching my older brother as a youngster in 2004 play this from beginning to end, and marveling at it. It was my introduction in to the FF universe and I've played every single one since (except the MMOs...). I recently played the original for the first time myself during COVID lockdown on our still functioning PS1, and I think you hit the nail on the head in this video. I remember spending an hour playing with my materia late game and actually just thoroughly enjoying it, the battles are just well-paced enough to not be a slog (the theme is my ringtone), and the story is probably my second favorite in the series (FF6 takes the cake, honestly). This is the game that made me not only a FF fanboy, but a Square/Square Enix fanboy. It holds a special place in my heart, as probably with most people who have played it. If you have the time, please do pick it up and enjoy the journey. It's so worth it.

I'm not much of a gamer, but a friend told me about FF7 about a month ago and that got me hooked on the series. I watched someone's playthrough of the remake first because I was afraid I didn't have the reflexes to play. I'm so used to Pokemon mechanics, where I take things slow and methodical. I loved what I saw from Remake and I didn't want to wait around with Rebirth, so I decided to play the original about a week ago...its an experience. I have a few qualms with it; most of which are the "mini-games" that feel less like minigames and more like chores such as the button sync or the big jump (which I'm stuck at the moment) I feel like Remake did a better job with that mechanic as the minigames actually are minigames. But yeah, I'm really playing for the story because I really wanna know what happens.

Maybe we just disagree on what we consider backstory for a character but Vincent does get some character growth and his own side quest. You have to stumble on it but you eventually find Lucrecia's cave and you not only find out who vincent was but what drives him in optional cut scenes. Its also how you get his ultimate weapon (or LB not sure which). Most importantly you find out why he feels he needs punished

Yes, a resounding yes. I played parts of this game throughout my life, but only in 2020 at the height of the pandemic did I boot up the game and play it from start to finish. It was easy to see what countless JRPG were inspired by, and the struggles the characters went through enraptured me and distracted me from the world's mess. It's not perfect but is a watershed game that solidified its place in gaming history.

Five most memorable moments of OG FFVII for me, in no particular order: 1) Solving the mystery of the vault inside the ShinRa Mansion and triggering of the fight with Lost Number 2) Stumbling through Mt Nibel and deciding to ignore the Save Point and electing to trigger combat with Materia Keeper 3) First time in Cosmo Canyon, meeting Bugenhagen, learning of the Lifestream and drudging my way through the GI Cave 4) After reobtaining our Materia from Yuffie, deciding to climb the Pagoda in Wutai, resulting in a final battle against Godo 5) The absurd grinding my brother and I put in together and finally defeating Ruby and Emerald Weapon; context, we were completely unaware of Double/Triple AP weapons, it was STUPID amounts of grinding These and so many more moments are fun to revisit with future playthroughs. I've gotten to where I can not only beat the game, but also the weapons in well under 20 hours of gameplay. It's so much fun to replay this and find more efficient ways to overcome each boss. Love OG FFVII, by far and away the best game of all time for me personally. Ocarina of Time, FFVIII, Link to the Past and others are close, but this one is just so damn good.

I played the game for the first time in 2021, so I didn't have nostalgia going for me. But I found the outdated graphics and art style charming in its own way. I imagined myself in the shoes of some kid in 1997 with a PS1 & how they would've seen it. I did use a guide (thankfully spoiler-free) to tell me how to get the powerful materia and items, and even though there was A LOT of grinding, I didn't mind. The music in the game was great, and that really helps offset the mundane grindy feelings. I got the platinum on my first playthrough, so unfortunately I can't bring myself to replay it since my mind's like "You already beat this, go play something else"

My most memorable moment in this game comes from a unique circumstance and honestly being lied to, but I love it nonetheless. For me it's the VERY END of Disc 2 where everyone comes back to the highwind to fight Sephiroth alongside Cloud and Tifa. I can’t remember who but someone told me this was a part of the game where everyone could leave you, but they wouldn’t if you were nice to them. If you picked the nice dialogue options and acted kindly to them, then they’d come back to help you save the world in the very end of the game. This isn’t true, everyone comes back here no matter what options you pick. But I thought it was true being a dumb kid and all so I did. I always picked the nice dialogue options and because of that, this scene always hits especially hard for me. When all of that come back, it really felt like I’d done the right thing. Not just that they were coming back to help Cloud, but they were coming back to help ME.

There's a bunch of little minigames that you only need to do once, which is a bit odd. The submarine part took me 15 seconds because I just drove forward mashing fire. I never bothered getting Vincent because I don't know how anyone would find him without a guide. I looked up where to find the combination to the safe, and the internet would only give me the combination, not how to figure it out. Storywise, going into Cloud's head was very strange and I don't know how [insert 2 player characters] survived their mortal wounds at [insert location in the past]. It also felt a bit weird when you're searching for a man in a black coat and then start pretending to be a soldier, playing games at the Gold Saucer, etc. I thought, "Don't we have something important to do?" Also, I managed to miss all of the materia that lets you get enemy skills, so the guide wasn't too helpful near the end. For good parts, The animations on the overworld characters is really great, especially for Aerith. Cloud's overall story, while told in a broken-up way, is really interesting for a protagonist once you get the whole story. The music is, of course, quite good and Aerith is a sweetie. Yuffie is fun, too, but I wouldn't have been able to recruit her without the guide.

1997, ff7 was groundbreaking. It was a massive triple a title on 3 disc. It was the first of it's kind on home console. It had great music, storytelling, combat and open world design.

From 97 onwards I've played this game atleast once a year every year, I've bought the game 5 times and still have my original black label from 97, best game ever in my opinion that said most memorable moments forgotten capital, northern crater, and beating the game the first time under leveled and under equipped. 10 out of 10 would recommend will forever play this and its spinoffs

If you're someone who didn't grow up playing videogames in the 90's, you can still find things about it that you enjoy and appreciate even if the gameplay doesn't feel as fun or as engaging, and it being from the 90's makes it feel like a lot of necessary elements to a video game are missing. Also, you'd need to be able to tolerate "grinding" experience points and materia AP, and doing lots of unguided exploring unless you have a strategy guide. Overall, I'd recommend that someone play the Remake before playing the original. And that's coming from someone who loved the original when it was brand new. It's just a much smoother introduction to the ideas and themes found within the "Compilation of FF7" as it's referred to.

Just did my first playthrough. Played it on a ps1 emulator, so I was playing as close to the original as possible. Took me about 60 hours. Pros: great story, fun combat system, interesting characters, didn't have to grind at all (like, from the first fight to the final boss, I never felt I had to stop the game and grind out the levels) Cons: -Janky movement -Janky graphics -Materia system was a pain to keep messing with. Like, swapping materia in and out of various characters was tedious enough that I simply didn't bother playing Yuffie, Vincent, or Cat Sith at all. -the minigames. Oh jesus the minigames. Some were fun, others were godawful to control. Overall: really good game, but a tough pill to swallow in 2022. Overall, I loved it, and had a great time. But it was incredibly frustrating at times, and in ways it just didn't need to be.

It's absurd that you didn't take into consideration that the game was released in 97 and the 1st actual 3D rpg Sony ventured into, which in theory is pretty much experimental. Everyone familiar to the FF series were glad that the franchise gave something new in the form of materia system which gave more versatility to strategies and character buildup instead of the linear equipment+level+stat growth system. Tbh the bad controls and graphics are to be expected if you are playing a 97 game in 2022 so please don't consider it as a cons.

@@filippe_kim of course I understand that everything I complained about was revolutionary *for its time* Its time is over. It doesn't hold up now. I still had a great time, and I recognize why 7 is one of the greatest games of all time. Still janky as hell, and it's important for anyone playing it for the first time to know what they're getting into.

I can relate to this 100%. I didn't mind it that much when I played a couple years ago, but watching my gf play has shown the biggest flaws to me once again. Mainly the awful mandatory minigames that just take you out of the action (which reminds me there's a couple really weird moments that also take momentum out of the game, smth everyone always complains about in VIII but curiously never VII). That said it's still a pretty good game since it's easy (which means no grinding which means good pacing), it has a good soundtrack and about half of the characters are quite compelling

Back in the day from what I remember the graphics were amazing and 🤯. I got this game two months after launch and played the official Playstation demo of the game 1000 times. That's the first reactor 1000 times with no saved progress. I was 12 at the time but I was very excited My family let me rent games mostly and I'd get to buy a games with good report cards. Here's the way I view FFVII (just the 1997 game, not the extra stuff)... The people at Square (although, yes, they were making other games like Chrono or Romancing, which were made with an immense amount of care and effort) wanted to top what they'd done with FFVI, that is to say, they wanted to do just as good and better, newer, more ambitious than they'd done with the previous FF title. So they wanted to make a masterpiece (or rather "another" masterpiece)... which required a LOT of work, care, and effort. They wanted to make as masterful a story as they could, as fun/cool a gameplay experience (for JRPG standards in line with other FF's) as they could, as awesome graphics and cutscenes as they could, etc. etc. And they really tried to achieve that. So having all this effort in mind, they didn't want to sink so much of their work into such a game without also trying to make sure they get compensated as much as possible and that the game gets as much recognition as possible. Which is why FFVII was one of the most heavily and widely marketed games in the world... ever. Square put a TON of money and effort into marketing just like they put effort into the game itself. And that exposure, making people aware of the game, promoting the game, hyping people up about it, is ultimately one of the main reasons why so many people know and love FFVII as they do. Yes, the story is a masterpiece; yes the game is very fun and appealing to a wide range of people; yes many of the graphical aspects were cutting edge, BUT that can be said of many other games, less popular games, less well-known games... the so-called "hidden gems" of that decade. So the fact that so much effort was put into marketing FFVII as well as making the game itself is greatly responsible for its success and enduring appeal. But my argument is essentially that Square would not have done this for a game they didn't believe in and which they weren't trying to get recognized as a masterpiece. So the fact that the game was good came first, and the fact that they decided it , therefore, needed a ton of promoting came second, as a logical conclusion.

I played the original game like 4 times throughout my life - first when I was a kid, honestly, the story was too complex for my wee brain to understand but the game was still fun so I was able to finish it but forgot most if not all of what happened. Second was after I watched advent children, after watching the movie I thought Cloud was soo cool vs Sephiroth, and with the omnislash finale to boot. I just had to replay the original again, now with a more mature mind to understand context lol! A few years later Crisis core came out on the PSP, and after I played it… again I go back to the original with even MORE context (this time I went in with completionist mindset). Years later, my life had moved on, lots of other games in between…then out of nowhere FF7 remake was announced, and I shit-you -not I bawled my eyes out. I played the game with reverence and it easily became THE Game of the year - nay - century for me. The 4th time was after the FF7 Rebirth showcase, it was just for refreshing my memory with the story beats and all that. One thing is for sure, i am definitely hyped for the FF7 re:trilogy and I will hold it close to my heart for all my life, I want my children and my children’s children to experience it!

I didn’t grow up with any FF games. I was born in 2001 too, we only had Nintendo consoles. When covid hit though I blew dust off my PS2 and played the PS1 version of FF7 that I got for Christmas one year prior because he was in smash. I played this game for the first time in 2020 and had played much “better aged” games like MGSV breath of the wild, God of War 2018 and tbh… nothing was quite like this game. It is my favorite video game of all time and it does everything right even the dorky graphics and controversial combat system which I personally love

It's interesting that someone gifted you the PS1 version of FF7 in 2019 rather than the remastered PS4 or Steam version, which is the same game but better translated, X3 speed, etc. But on the other hand, being gifted the PS1 version is more special, and you had the experience of actually playing the OG OG. that's memorable.

The thing I dislike at this video... is the fact that it omits Final Fantasy 6, which was the main reason 7 was released as well. Back at the launch of the Snes, they brought over Final Fantasy 4, but it didn't sell all too well. That's why they didn't bring Final Fantasy 5 to US and with 6 they "tried it again" and 6 became a massive success. Because of that... everyone in US... and the ones in EU that imported it... waited for Final Fantasy 7. Which was the first Final Fantasy that got released worldwide, as it was the first one to be released in Europe as well.

I remember playing this game when it came out… it was my first true JRPG. Even then the graphics were considered rough. I remember many people saying it sucked because of the 9 billion enemy encounters and the fact that the mechanics like ladders, doors, and some items were place in ways that were extremely frustrating. The story is the best thing about the game. I tried to go back and play it recently after playing the remake and I couldn’t do it. The remake is SOOO much better. IMO just play the remake as it has the soul of the original but just far more thought out and detailed. If you must play an older FF for nostalgia reasons FF6 or FFX are better options, FFX being the best of the series IMO.

I would take extreme exception with people saying that squaresoft / square enix is milking the final fantasy 7 franchise. In order to milk a franchise the games have to be mediocre to low quality surviving only on the legacy of the franchise. If the games are good then the games are good and you literally cannot milk a franchise as long as you're putting out quality content...

Spoiler warning! I think the fact that you’re are forced into a fight with Jenova after Aerith’s death AND her dang theme is still playing in the background is one of the most emotionally impactful parts of the game. It’s like, hey this major character that is helping the protagonist to come out of his shell and rediscover who he is just got murdered in front of you. Here’s some somber music associated with her character to tug at your heartstrings and a fight you don’t really want right now! No time to grieve. You are immediately forced to confront the reality of the threat that is facing not only you and your friends, but the entire planet.
