Considering that this game has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and that it will soon be rereleased on modern consoles, I felt like it was about time to give Telenet's 1990 shump masterpiece Gaiares the SHOREVIEWKEN treatment.

It’s up there! When Genesis was new during the lifecycle I had MUSHA, Truxton, Forgotten Realms, Thunder Force 2/3/4, and Gaiares.

Yes, this indeed an awesome game. I have the Retro-Bit reproduction. But a Mega Drive copy is tempting.

I can see people loving Gaiares that much. For me the best 16-bit shooter is hard to say but I lean toward Pulstar pretty heavily. However, Gaiares certainly is top tier. I'd even say top 5 for all 16-bit shooters.

Yes. Ahead of it's time. This was before 2.5D shooters which added depth and dimension but often confusion when it goes at breakneck speed.

don't think I played this one, but looks pretty sweet! may have to look into the retro-bit re-release for this one, for sure. I was going to say I hope it gets some kinda switch release, but I forgot the 'telenet collection' was going to be a thing and it's already on there! so will likely check it out that way it looks like a fun one.

Terrific game. Tough as nails though. Never made it past stage 6 or 7 myself. I’d be curious to try out the remaster. Thanks for the review Jim!

I agree this is a great game. I'd rank it below a handful of games such as Lightening Force, Axelay, M.U.S.H.A. and Lords of Thunder, but it's still a top-tier game for the time. I like the strategy involved in figuring out the best weapons to steal, and some of the bosses are real showstoppers. Great review!

Great game. For me though, Thunderforce 4 or Musha Aleste is the best 16 bit shooter.

I’m mores fan of games like MUSHA, Thunder Force IV, Gley Lancer, etc., but I do like Gaiares.

Decent shmup for megadrive ( got a re-release awhile ago ) i liked Veytex too, a couple of levels had some decent parallax scrolling, unfortunatley only 6 levels to play.

Too bad Mark Bussler isn't in the game anymore. I half expected a transmission from the Intergalactic Space Arcade to interrupt this video with the battlecry of "TRUXTON!!!"

16 bit was arguably even better than the 32 bit era of shooters so I don't think Gaiares is even close to being the best. But it is a great game and could see why it would be some peoples favourite.

Definitely one of the greatest, but I don't think it's quite THE greatest. I'd rank it just below Thunder Force IV, personally.

Personally I think the mega drive has many other titles better than gaiares ...gynoug, steel empire, gley lancer, elemental master, bio hazard battle, twinkle tale, battle mania 2 and of course those 2 masterpieces called thunder force 4 and musha aleste.
