I have used it twice. It cost us 32 dollars for two people. The thing I loved the most is how much free time we had to do other things like shopping, chillin, enjoying the sights and ambience. We had park hopper so we got to ride rides on both parks without having to purchase it again. We didn’t wait more than 8 min per Lightning vs 60 to 120 min on some rides. Only one we waited on was rise.

I see you find my other Genie+ video. 😃 I just responded to your other comment. I’ll be redoing this video in a few weeks with the goal of making it more helpful on a step by step basis and more involved with how we made our choices. You’ll want to check that one out when it publishes. With the right plan, you can get A LOT done. The first question is going to be when are you going? And what possible dates do you have for Disneyland? Is there flexibility there? Avoiding holidays will be key, and visiting during a Tuesday through Thursday will always be better than Friday through Monday.

I think it would definitely be worth it for you. Especially since you’re doing both parks in one day. Even if it’s $30/person, that’s still pretty affordable compared to Universal and Knott’s. You can only use the lightning lane once per ride right? Looking at that list of rides, I’m thinking my kids wouldn’t appreciate most of the rides listed since they’ll be too young still. My strategy will definitely be to just rope drop.

Correct, once per ride. And, yes, most of the rides on the list are the bigger rides with height requirements or are more intense. Benjamin enjoys all the slow moving dark rides and most of those aren’t on Genie+

@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose that all depends on how long you’re planning on visiting. For 1 day, definitely get Genie+. For 2 or more days, I would recommend it at least one of those 2 days, but don’t think it’s necessary for all of them. The good news is, you can literally add it at any time. So try it out the first day, and then decide if you think it’s worth it for any future days.

Thanks for this video! I know it's a year old now, but I'm curious if you have tips / tricks for Genie+ with Parent Swap or Rider Switch (lol i forgot what it's called officially). We're going with our 1 year old in December, so there are a handful of rides we'd like to get on but our little can't.
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 8 ай бұрын
So the Rider Swap just sends you through the lightning lane. There would be no difference for the parent who sits out to use a rider switch pass or their Genie+ reservation. They’ll wait the same amount of time.
@frantasticthings
@frantasticthings 8 ай бұрын
@@SoCalDisneyDad Oh! So would you recommend our group still pay for Genie+ or should we just utilize Rider Swap? i.e. would the first half of the group get to go through LL too or just the other half?
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 8 ай бұрын
@@frantasticthings Rider Switch only lets the person who sat out and one other person go through the Lightning Lane on the second time. I would still recommend Genie+ because there are rides that everyone can ride, even the 1 year old, that are on Genie+ that you can’t use Rider Switch for. Just be aware that if the person sits out has a lightning lane for, say, Space Mountain, they have to use it before they can book a new one. So Rider Switch is somewhat irrelevant unless you have more people in your party and one of them wants to ride with the person that sat out. In that case, I would explain it to the cast member and ONLY scan the person who will ride again with the person that sat out. I’m sure they are used to dealing with this. They should be able to help you with any possible complications of the two systems at that moment.

Great video! I’m going this Saturday October 8th and want to do the rope drop strategy. (What time do you recommend to arrive for parking?) since I already purchased a parking pass. (Also right as soon as I enter the park do you recommend that I purchase the individual Lightning lane for rise of resistance immediately?) also (what time would you recommend to start reserving Lightning lanes if I am rope dropping)? I plan to rope drop fantasy land rides first aka Peter pan , should I get my second lightning lane around 9:00AM? Since I plan to purchase the rise of resistance first.
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad Жыл бұрын
Parking opens an hour before the park does. So it will be open at 7 AM. We usually arrive around 7:30 and make it to the park gates around 7:45-7:50. Grab your first lightning lane as soon as you scan into the park. The window is good for an hour so if your window starts right at 8 you have until 9 to use it. So rope drop a ride or two if the standby on traditionally long rides is very short. Otherwise, hit the first ride at rope drop then use your Fastpass. Try to select your first lightning lane to be one everyone else is running to straight away. Think Space Mountain or Indiana Jones if you’re rope dropping Peter Pan. You can grab Rise of the Resistance right away or keep an eye on it. But it’ll probably go fast so don’t wait too long. You can have both a regular lightning lane and an Individual lightning lane at the same time since the one is a paid extra. The most important part of maximizing Genie+ is to use it for rides that are available immediately or almost immediately so that you can book another just as soon as you scan in to your current ride. If you schedule rides that are 2+ hours out you can’t book another until 120 minutes has elapsed and that’s 2 hours you can’t use the pass. Do that 2-3 times and you’ll find that 6 hours have gone by and you’ve only used it a handful of times. Whereas if you’re booking one every 20-30 minutes by taking advantage of the rides available right away, you’ll get through nearly the whole stack of available rides (like we did in this video).

There *might* be an advantage, but I cannot confirm. At WDW, you can purchase Genie+ at midnight and make your first reservation at 7:00 AM. When we did Genie+ at Disneyland, we couldn’t purchase it until we had scanned into the park, which means we couldn’t make our first selection until then. It’s *possible* you’ll be able to make a selection earlier than other people, but I don’t think that’s strictly necessary here. @SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 2 жыл бұрын
So I learned that if you purchase tickets (not annual passes), you can buy genie+ when you buy your tickets. So everyone should have it. That *might* mean that you can book your first lightning lane without being scanned into the park. At the very least, you’ll need everyone’s ticket linked on your account. If you can’t purchase genie+ until the day of arrival because you already bought tickets (and didn’t buy genie+) or are annual passholders, then you’ll likely encounter the same problem I did and won’t be able to do anything until scanned in. Meaning every ticket would need to be scanned into the park.

Hello. I want to take my 4 and 5 year old to disneyland and I want them to have the best time. Ive been watching your videos the past few days and they have been really helpful. Thank you. The only thing im still skeptical about is the genie plus pass. This video has helped alot but I just have a few more questions. So again they are 4 and 5 and it is gonna be just me and husband so we plan to just ride everything for little kids, no roller coasters or HUGE drops. Other than splash mountain (plan to save that one for last). Anyway so with that being said. We are going on a tuesday or wednesday for less crowds sometime in the middle of may. Do you honestly suggest the Genie plus for us? Secondly If i were to get genie plus how do you know how close the rides are ? Like if i book one ride are we going to have to sprint to the other side of the park to make it to our time frame? Or is there a map or something? Last time ive been to disney land was like 2003 when things were easier lol and i was like 7 lol so all i remember is riding things but not how the park is set up. Sorry for the long comment.
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad Жыл бұрын
The only lightning attractions they WON’T be able to ride is Matterhorn, Incredicoaster, and Indiana Jones unless your four year old isn’t 40 inches yet. If you eliminate coasters and extreme thrill rides entirely, even the ones they’re tall enough for, you’ll still have 7 rides in Disneyland and 4 rides at DCA as a part of the service. If you assume each lightning lane saves you 30 minutes in line on average and you use it on 6 attractions (a very conservative estimate), that’s 3 hours of your time for other rides. If you use it for all 11 in a single day, that’s almost 6 hours of your time saved. If you’re only going for a single day, I think it’s absolutely necessary to just alleviate a lot of stress about getting in your top attractions. As far as timing goes, you have a whole hour to use your Lightning Lane and at most it takes 10 minutes to walk from one extreme side of the park to the other (except during parades, it might be like 25 depending on where you need to go). We are redoing this video in a more tips style, more relaxed “not get every ride done” format this Friday and it’ll be out early next week.

If you’ve got multiple days, I think you’ll get everything done that you want to do without any issues. However, I have gotten on the ride within 25 minutes before, but it’s rare. Usually I’m reaching the first preshow at the 25 minute mark. Which is where most of the experience starts anyway.

I haven’t been to Disneyland since covid. I know Disney world has a two hour wait before you can use lightning lane. Is the two hour rule the same for Disneyland?
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad Жыл бұрын
Yes, the dreaded 2 hour rule is a thing here too. The trick is to book rides that are only like 0-30 minutes out. As soon as you use your existing selection, you can immediately make another one. Even while you’re still waiting in line for the previous ride. The two hour rule only comes into play if you book a ride more than 2 hours out, which I would only recommend doing if you are planning to leave the park or have a table service restaurant booked or something.

Ok sooo having said that at the end We are thinking of going the 2nd week of October. We do have a handicapped person in the party, do you suggest getting the genie plus?
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 2 жыл бұрын
Handicapped wouldn’t make much of a difference. More or less just how much you want to get done in a day vs how fast you want to move. Genie+ is great for getting a lot done. But you’ll have to keep it moving, chasing the lightning lanes to maximize its use. If you don’t care about maximizing it, and just want a stress-free trip, get Genie+ and however much you use you use. On the other side of the same concept (not maximizing ride time), if saving money is the goal, then you absolutely can have a great time without Genie+. I’d really only recommend it for those wanting to cram as much into the day as possible OR those who want a more relaxing trip. At WDW, we paid for Genie+ 5 of our 8 park days. At Disneyland, as annual passholders, we will likely never buy it again. But for a once a year trip (or less), I’d say just buy it unless money is tight and you need every possible savings.

Hello! Would you recommend getting genie + for a visit scheduled for Good Friday? We're early birds, so we'd be there as soon as the park opens, and we're planning on getting our preferred rides out of the way first. Since I don't know how crowded it usually is during this particular holiday, I'm on the fence about getting genie +. Thanks!
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad Жыл бұрын
Genie+ will absolutely be a necessity. I would highly recommend Genie+ even if you’re not visiting on a holiday. But Good Friday is almost assuredly going to be busy. What I would do is rope drop a ride that can get long waits but doesn’t have Genie+ like Pirates of the Caribbean, then grab your first lightning lane as something that looks like it’s already starting to go quickly. Today, right now (at 8:10) that would be Indiana Jones. Alternatively, you could rope drop Space Mountain which usually only takes about 10-15 minutes at rope drop. It’s the fastest moving attraction where a decent chunk of the crowd goes. If you do actually rope drop something like Indiana Jones, Rise of the Resistance, or Mickey and Minnie’s, or Peter Pan you’ll get stuck in 30-45 minute standby waits that eat up your time for riding rides when hardly anyone is in the park. 8 AM to 9 AM is when you should be standby riding everything that doesn’t have genie+ or some genie+ rides with 5-10 minute waits first thing in the morning like Big Thunder or Haunted Mansion. That way you don’t have to use a Genie+ on them. In this video, my family managed to ride nearly every Genie+ ride, BUT it wasn’t a holiday, and we knew our way around usual wait times to know what to snag when. As you mentioned, definitely make a priority list and power through all of those first, but keep an eye on secondary priorities that might be disappearing quickly from Genie+ and avoid making a reservation more than 2 hours out unless you absolutely have to or plan to take an afternoon break like we did in this video.

@@theprocessmavens6105 See that’s a tough one. On one hand it’s a holiday weekend and in the middle of Spring Break. But on the other, it’s Easter. A time when people are usually at home with family, so I’d expect less passholders in the park. I went on Halloween once and it was less busy than usual weekends. If it were Memorial Day, no question, it’ll be packed. But Easter I just don’t know. I’ve never been on Easter for the very reason I mentioned. I’m spending time with family over Easter dinner.

Love you and your family! How do I get to see if you reply without scanning through all the comments. We are not going until May but when I look at the wait times for the popular rides running on 12 October absolutely nothing is available for LL. I really cannot stand in a 80 min lineup. How would you solve this dilemma? 🧚‍♀️🏴‍☠️
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 9 ай бұрын
You have to ride the popular rides earlier in the day. Disneyland’s LLs don’t run out as fast as WDWs, but some of the more popular rides will still be 4-5 hours out sometimes. So for the safest bet, try to ride (or get LLs for) the bigger rides before 3-4 PMish. What I usually do is rope drop one, and then grab an LL for the ride disappearing the fastest and ride that one around 9 AM. Then you’ve got to do a mix of immediately available rides, while keeping an eye on the ones pushing further out. Ideally grab another more popular ride before it pushes past 2 hours out because that’s the upper limit and you’ll waste less time on Genie+ if you don’t engage the 2-hour rule too often.

how long do you have to wait until you can book your next genie plus reservation. if I buy it when I get into the parks at 8 and book it then, when will I be able to book another one. if it's 2 hours in WDW how are you able to do so many in one day?

You can book a new lightning lane when one of two conditions is met. Either you used the first one (at which point you can make another reservation immediately) Or when 2 hours elapses. So if you book at 8 AM and your first lightning lane isn’t until 11 AM, you can’t book another until 10 AM.

How long do you usually wait with a Genie pass? Not very familiar with Disney
@SoCalDisneyDad
@SoCalDisneyDad 2 жыл бұрын
In the ride lines? Maybe about 10-25% of the posted wait time. So if it's a 45 minute wait, could be about 5-10 minutes. There are two entrances, standby queue and lightning lane. The lightning lane may have a bit of a line itself, and then about 75% of the way through the queue the two lines merge, and so you're waiting that last stretch with everyone else. It definitely helps you skip a lot of the line as they prioritize lightning lane since it's a paid service.

The whole video is tips, they just aren’t listed out as “number one” etc. Here they are, as many as I can remember, in a numbered fashion: 1. Arrive Early and purchase it as soon as you can. 2. Rope drop a busy ride, so you can use the Fastpass on it again later 3. Select the most popular attractions first as their times will push out further, faster. 4. Try to avoid the two hour rule, if possible, by selecting attractions that are available sooner. In this way, you’ll get more done. 5. If an attraction breaks down, use your multi-attraction pass on a ride you couldn’t acquire or is too far out to avoid wasting time. 6. Some attractions aren’t available on the multi-attraction pass, be aware of what they are before you try to use it (and get turned away, as we did at Toy Story). 7. Use breaks, like lunch and dinner, appropriately to stack attractions. For instance, if you know you’re going back to the hotel for 2+ hours, select a ride that’s two hours out and wait the two hour rule so you can use it again as soon as you return. I’m sure there are more but it’s been awhile since I put the video together. If you have any direct questions, I’m happy to answer them.
