I noticed this a few years ago. Even when phone screen was off and in my pocket I would start seeing very specific ads related to conversations I'd had. Later, while on a family trip, my kids and I started talking about random stuff just to see if it would influence the ads on my phone. Sure enough I started getting ads related to every single thing we mentioned (funeral services, leatherworking tools, cruises, real estate investing, lawyers, tennis rackets, korean restaurants,...etc)

0:45 Actually one of the big reasons that happens a lot is because google, along with other big sites and apps, will use your location by tracking when you and other users are nearby. Lets say one of your friends really wants a new pair of shoes. They come up to you and starts talking to you about them, and earlier that day they were searching them up on the internet looking at them. When you open up your phone after the conversation, you somehow also end up seeing ads for the same shoes they were talking about, even though you’ve never even seen them or searched them in your life. Many people who worked for big social media companies or websites says this happens because the app recognizes when your around another user frequently using you and the other users location, then which the app assumes yall two are friends or at least acquaintances. So the app will give you related ads that are like the other user you are around a lot. This might not be true for all apps, but it’s scary to know how far some apps will go just to sell you some information.

one thing i noticed was and my friend started talking about someone and as soon as i go to my home page the first thing that comes up is "suggested friend: (person he was talking about)" that really sealed the deal for me.

I figured this a long time ago when I came home from outside, jokingly exclaimed "godDAMN I need a massage" even though I wasnt planning to get one, open youtube, and there it is an ad on massaging.

It definitely still does this. I recently went to an antique store and said to my mom "did you see that over there tshirt that said 'thats what i do, i fix things and say stuff?" and later that day i got several ads for custom shirts with that exact phrase on them. This happened despite me having all google settings on my phone set to not listen to me, and I've even removed mic permissions from any google apps.

this happens to us all the time, more recently ads or stories come up mere minutes after a simple statement about something... you don't even have to search for that specific thing anymore

Of course they listen at least some. The most surprising thing is that so many people research, and communicate about related common, often current topics. Then something pops up even when no topical discussion occurs simply because of recent online behavior of our own or in nearby communities that causes ads to generate more.

Literally yesterday a friend was telling me about this exact video and today I get it recommended.

Your phone does the exact same thing, it's always listening. I only really took notice of this when my friend group decided to start talking about Himalayan pink salt lamps and out of nowhere the ads were everywhere.
