Im a casual watcher. I was never impressed by the animation of the show but it never felt like it was bad or anything. People are used to get anime with high level production like csm or demon slayer nowadays so they expect every show to have the same budget and care

They hate on it, because it's Mappa animating it

I've seen ALOT of takes on Twitter, such as: Jigokuraku looks better than CSM or It is the worst looking show ever created. MY problem is with MAPPA, Jigokuraku COULD have looked infinitely better IF they'd released it much later, ever after JJK S2. If MAPPA had given this show the treatment of a big and important show then I could see HP becoming the next JJK of anime in terms of popularity, but their schelude simply doesn't allow that. Sadly, HP is just another random show under MAPPA's belt, for them it's nothing special.

The compositing is possibly the most appealing element to me, I just really like the background blurs, the everpresent light, even the lighting in the room thing was quite cool and scenic. Some Kazuhiro Yamada character lighting would have helped the whole show but I definitely won't complain, especially when the characters usually have so little detail in this show

100% because it’s MAPPA, so people need to shit on every flawed pixel. But here’s more interesting question, how much less popular this show would be if it’s look exactly the same like this, but made by some other random studio. Right now it’s the 3rd most popular this season after DS and Oshi. The manga is not THAT popular with 4 mil copies. I’d say the popularity will reduced by 50-60% if it’s by other studios.

I think I saw the exact tweet your talking about. They took 4 screenshots from the recent ep and did not elaborate past “dear god the compositing is bad”. I was especially confused with the “am I in paradise” one because the bright light in my opinion wasn’t bad compositing it was just how the cut was storyboarded like the compositing was supposed to be blindingly bright.

I love this manga and its sad that it doesnt get the CSM or JJK treatment because its just as good. So far the show has looked way better than i expected so im glad but the characters faces seem to be just a bit off a lot of the time

Honestly growing up watching lower quality animation, it's insane just how much the standard of the average watcher has risen. Thing is, not all studios or projects have the same resources or time to bring forth a masterpiece each time a series gets adapted. It's a very complicated bureaucratic process. And even without superb animation the story so far has been intriguing, so I'd say it's a decent job.

I think the show will have some great moments animation wise down the line given knowledge of the content. I personally think a K1RO cut would fit really well in certain fights down the line, but he may be occupied with JJK 2. The production has been fairly standard and as you said the comp is definitely not the worst thing ever. I do think that while ADs aren't a good way to judge production, having over 15+ individual people doing corrections for a show with simpler designs on the whole isn't always the best sign. I think the general Twitter population waits for a MAPPA Project to trip up so that they can attack it. It's hard not to say that without sounding like a d-rider, but apparently trying to be objective and think critically means you're a MAPPA defender and/or d-rider to some. It's always hard to pin why MAPPA Project's get the most controversy because the agendas and intentions people have when coming to give their thoughts on the matter differ so much. Basically, the online discourse is ass. Fuck.

Not a bad looking anime. But it's the above average anime every season has. While Heavenly Delusion is the anime you hardly see in a year

I still find it a little baffling that people are saying that Mappa ruined the manga. I mean it could’ve had better storyboards, composting, etc but it’s still pretty good for the schedule and most casuals won’t really notice too much.

There have been some really well done scenes the first that comes to mind being the scene at the beach were gabimaru took out several prisoners and just stood there in the water with blood in his mouth, I’m not an animation expert or anything I just watch alot of anime and online animations but the colors, fluidity of the movement and the designs were all super pleasing to my eyes

The production time period this got was quite concerning but I'm surprised the team behind Jigokuraku could do this much. I had very less expectation before but this is better than I expected but definitely not one of the best. Just the character models and compositing issue for me, otherwise it's decent. But oh boi, surely the production of this was hectic. You can really tell from the product if it's done with passion or barely finished on time in a rush. Nevertheless, good job for the effort from the staff team responsible for this.

TL;DR Jigokuraku is good Just as you mentioned in this video,high number of ADs doesn't necessarily shows how good or bad a production is,it's really annoying when people start saying production is bad because a show have high numbers of ADs(I know schedule isn't the best for jigo but still) same happened with Vinland season 2 where everyone and their mother started talking about production issues just because it had high number of ADs,it's a twitter thing at this point tbh and I don't give a shit about it. Hell's paradise is good not only visuals (yes it is better than most of the other seasonals except high profile shows) story is really good I'm hooked tbh.

I love that you said "normal animation" that it's not as good looking as jujutsu kaisen or chainsaw man. I just think people are expecting a lot from mappa lately.

Me being a 25+ year anime fans "since I was a kid" not having any problems with normal looking shows coz I remember and still watch many 80s 90s anime

The only problem in jigo compositing is that (like sadly the 80% of modern Anime) randomly and heavily uses light diffusion filter, that if not used on a source of light (in particular huge ones) it will create as I like to call it :" the 70s TV effect" vedi making everything look grainy and like it was filmed in 580p or less

Hell was never a paradise. Most terrifying places we must not fall to but humanity choose different path leads to death. Many people went there.

The animation was good in the first 2 episodes, episode 3 and 4 were averagely good just not great. It'll probably be really good in later episodes.

I feel like you did a great job with this breakdown and what you said aligned to a tea with my thoughts about it as well. 👍 A lot of people, even myself, got worried about the show after all the news that had been coming out about it prior to release, such as the preanimated (or partially preanimated) trailers very close to air day, BUT I GOTTA SAY, so far so good. There are a few less polished scenes here and there, but overall I'd agree people are exaggerating. Granted we're only 4 episodes in and IF the anime is to show noticeable signs of melting that might be moreso towards the final third or quarter of this cour I guess? I hope not tho. 🙏 Btw, totally unrelated, curious to hear your thoughts about the Bleach TYBW cour 2 trailer that's supposedly going to drop May 7. Even as a fan, I agree with a lot of the criticisms you had about cour 1, but it seems like this time we'll see improvements if we're to take the staff's comments seriously, which is honestly A MUST, given how much more action focused cour 2 will be, with every single episode pretty much covering a different fight (and very important ones at that). Hopefully you'll enjoy it more next time and I'll enjoy it even more as well. 🙏

Yet another great manga recommendation. I feel like half of the time the mangas are just better, because of how much crunch these animators have. I mean there’s also crunch in manga, but it tends to be more consistent. Fine animation doesn’t cut it when I have a lot of classics to catch up on.

Thoughts on the cg fish in Swordsmith village ep 3. I know you're not making any videos of demon slayer because of aniplex. But so many people been complaining saying the cg fish monster in ep 3 is berserk or ex arm level bad which imo is not even close to that.

I think it's not wrong to expect more. Especially the compositing.

I think the blur is there to make the viewer focus on character expressions, rather than on the overwhelming amount of detail the backgrounds would have otherwise. You could say that in a detail heavy scene it would be the less detailed character faces that would attract attention, but I personally have no issue with the blurs. Also, speaking of Season 3 Part 2, I am failing to see how the blue-green shade is an issue. I think it does a great job at setting the tone of what’s going on on the screen during the first half, while during the second half it is heavily contrasted by the yellow-orange-brown shade. The compositing aids the show by splitting it into 2 halves with contrasting colours, the same way the story splits the show into two halves with different tones. I see it as a benefit, rather than a drawback. Maybe its just me, idk.

my issue with the show is not the animation, its the colors. for show that prides itself on the dissonance of a beautiful paradise with murderous monsters, everything looks so dull and muddy. so many colorful flowers everywhere but they still look dull. and its sad that the opening visuals are so vibrant but the actual show isnt

Its just a normal anime. We've been spoiled with amazing animation from big series and i expected something just as good as Jjk and csm with Jigokuraku. but its fine cuz i like the story and plot

It's decent, but that's the problem. A lot of people love the Jigokuraku manga(including me) and the story is also being categorized among the Dark 3 Shonen of our current era so a lot of people had some high expectations out of it. They feel let down whenever animation quality in Jigokuraku drops because after Mappa's groundbreaking successes it doesn't feel that they're taking the adaptation seriously which feels like a betrayal to longtime Jigokuraku fans who were excited for a Mappa adaptation.

I thought it looked good to be honest. I'm surprised anyone has this criticism.

I think there are two main reasons for people calling out the animation. 1. The trailer for the show looked really good and really gave the impression that the show would be at or near the quality of other recent mappa hits. I was quite surprised how much worse overall animation quality seemed when compared with the trailer. I must say that trailer was expertly cut to give that perception. (which is high praise from me because I'm of the opinion that most anime trailers are very poor even if the show and animation quality are above average) 2. The reason people might be more outspoken about this shows animation is because people who do attribute a higher level of importance to animation are more likely to gravitate to this show due to the trailer and studio behind it. It's not that the show's animation is being more harshly judged per say. It's more likely audience contains a higher percent of harsh judges when compared to other anime. People who didn't judge some of those other shows because they deemed them too low quality to even bother watching.

As a beginner animator, the thing that strike me off as jarring to me is their art style constantly changing. All the time. People who are normal anime watchers may not notice it, but for us artist's and beginner animators we could notice it very easily, but their VFX are covering it up for me. Over all I would give them 7.5/10. Not terrible, but also not amazing. To me, as long as it doesn't effect the story I'm alright with it.

I think the animation is pretty accurate compared to the manga. It doesn’t dramatically enhance the source material like Ufotable does with Demon Slayer or Wit / Mappa did with AoT, but it’s still good to me.

Great video, and I agree for the most part. Only thing I don't agree on is the comment that JJK looked unappealing. In a way, yes it is unappealing, but I feel it's done that way to fuel the story and environment. Therefore, I feel that that environment is appealing and works perfectly for the story. I mean, I don't expect a vibrant ecosystem in a story about sorcerers and a war of good and bad. Either way, I can't wait to watch hell's paradise. I had been backed up with finishing college finals/projects, but I'm now done and finally have time.

I think the blur refers to the fog that's involved in the story. I'm not knowledgable with this stuffs just my 2 cents.

i think this animation fits the anime perfectly, i never had a feeling that it lacked something or that something was off. Overall i am happy with this adaptation

For me it was the flow of the story and then the animation. I was hyped for the anime because I loved the character design especially the blind samurai looked awesome. The dead guy on a boat with flowers also looked mysterious and had me wanting for more but oh boy I didn’t like gabimaru the protagonist at all. I still watched because it’s an ongoing anime maybe the story would get better…but I don’t like sagiri now😂. The cuts in some episodes feel weird makes me feel like they skipped a lot from manga but I don’t know 😅. Maybe I will try again later to finish it.

The animation is well done actually and is consistently good. It's just some of the drawings are a bit sloppy at times. I mean it's nothing that hasn't been seen before in anime. I do wonder tho how drawings could end up sloppy. I guess it happens when animators are rushed. Are they just so rushed that they can't afford to even make sure they're drawing turns out well? I'm sure it's not a matter of skill... If that's how rushed they are then welp all I can say is I feel bad for them and that MAPPA needs to slow the fuck down. Chainsaw Man AOT Vinland Saga s2 Hells Paradise One Punch Man s3 If u ask me this is too many HIGH RISK projects... I'm not gonna be one of those ppl who'll use the mistreated animators as a shield against all criticism to the shows cuz bad drawings are bad drawings. Same with bad animation.. But I rlly do think MAPPA should be taking on less. I'm particularly worried about Chainsaw Man as it's the one I care about most and the one which I feel will be the most strenuous project. Like, it'll literally be game changing for anime forever if adapted well... I mean I can accept that something like the gun devil will probs be fully cgi, but the last thing I'll want is for Reze and Pochita form to be cg at all times or for the typhoon devil to be like 5 fps. I don't want Denji and Beam's combo attacks to look sloppy. I want the Gun fiend fight to be well directed and animated for max emotional impact and immersion. Same with hell. I just don't want this stuff to look like corners were being cut because I feel that any of that at all will absolutely ruin some of these scenes. Hells Paradise does look above average. So do all the animes MAPPA is doing rn. But I'm serious, CSM s2 legit has some scenes that will be effectively ruined by receiving "above average" treatment.

Absolutely agreed. It's an average to above average production. It gets the animation right which is acceptable knowing the nature of its production. The compositing is also noticeably flawed but it's nothing to make a fuss about. Extra blur making the characters seem out of place, usage of weird green/yellowish cokro filters are the biggest issue. Sometimes the CG movements also don't blend in with the 2D characters in the foreground. But all of these are just pretty normal in most anime these days. So there's nothing too bad that people have to brand it as something horrendous if I'm being honest. The only reason a section of the sakuga community hates the production quality of Jigokuraku is because of Manabu Otsuka while handing the job to Makita gave people hopes of an ambitious project which Jigokuraku is far from being.

I have one problem with this anime and it's not animation. Why there are so many offscreen fights and it's getting little bit annoying.

The real problem with Hell's Paradise is that there isn't really one, in the last couple years we've been spoiled by great looking anime with great compositing, from Ufotable to Mappa the compositing in the last couple years has been very impressive, so even though the show is animated well, it doesn't look like JJK or CSM so people go wild, can't wait for the inevitable Mappa One Punch Man drama in the near future
