Is HEMA elitist? Should it be?

Some thoughts about HEMA, on a background of our recent sword & buckler sparring.

Fencers: Angel Chernaev, Borislav Krustev, Teodor Petrov, Radostin Nanov.

Medieval martial arts needs to become mainstream. It is an outlet for violence that doesn't end in bloodshed. In the future medieval martial arts could be a unifying sport for the world. I'd rather fight a Russian, or Chinese man in a medieval "battle" and shake hands after. Better than dying with guns pointed at one another.

Best motto for life :P Seriously though, elitism can be a good or bad thing, just depend on the types of personalities behind the masks. But the one thing to take away from this subject as a whole, in my humble opinion, learn from those people, even the bad kind of elites, because they have some value in any kind of sport, art, or whatever. Nice exchanges, always fun to watch sword and Buckler.

I'm not sure if you think about the same concept of elitism that many buhurt fighters, codex belli people or Huskarl fighters actually mean when the talk about elitism in Hema. They often seem to talk about a habit of reanactment of fighting styles and historical accuracy of armor and weapons that pisses these common folks of. It has nothing to do with elitists in meaning of specialists in their own community. It's about the elitism habit that some of our members transport to other communities.

Today I learned that according to many people, if you have more money to spend on your hobby, you are already the elite, and since HEMA requires money, it's elitist by default. So apparently, I don't really know what elitist means. I get that some buhurt people think it's "elitist" to strive for an actual connection to history through sources and accurate representations of arms and armour. They can piss off :P

@@borislavkrustev8906 thats another point of elitism but most of the Buhurt armors are more expensive than any sort of hema gear. You think that the progauntlets are expensive, than you never looked for some titanium stuff. Buhurtkits start by 3000 euro and walking up to 10000 euro. The prices for Harnischfechter can be higher but often they are the same because hardened steel is less expensive.

@@borislavkrustev8906 - Thats an interesting point i never thought about, but you are correct - when it comes to sports in general HEMA is easily one of the more expensive ones. Even if you go for the very basics with the longsword: A sword and a face mask are the very minimum and even a cheap sword will easily cost you 300€ and more.

@@D4l4m4r But that's not the minimum. You can start HEMA with a stick. You can get a mask and simple gloves and a boffer. Give it a few months more and then invest in a steel sword. Seriously, this idea that you need to have a full kit the day you start HEMA is just ridiculous. You can learn a ton and practice for quite a while for much, much less.

@@borislavkrustev8906 - I do completely agree. I didnt not mean to say you needed a sword to start with (that wouldnt be a good idea anyway, even if you have the money you should be sure if you actually like the sport). Still, at some point you will have to invest in a sword and thats what i wanted to say. In our club there are lot of younger pupils, often from a low income background and for them the whole thing is quite an investment. So in that regard HEMA is considerably more expensive than the alltime favourite soccer, or basketball :-)
