Heroscape is a flash back to 18 years ago and a game we all wanted to come back into print or is it? Do the mechanics hold up versus today's games and prices?
I compare Heroscape to a modern game and talk about my opinions on this new Hasbro Pulse crowd funding platform campaign and hopefully give you dear viewer enough information to make an informed purchase!

Hex terrain looks better. It’s not even close, got it be honest. The ability to make the map look completely different every time makes it so so much better. I’d say that very wise, the hexagon stackability and height rules beat warcry easily

The hex tiles are a really good idea and they fit the game very well. Honestly I think Heroscape was the only game that ever attempted anything like this.

I appreciate you pointing out that Amazon sometimes puts games on sale for way below retail. However, the retail price for the version of HeroQuest that sold for $100 on the HasLab (the lower tier) is $135. It is currently almost $200 on Amazon (some sellers have it at around $150). I have some additional context to add. The Avalon Hill team has said that a $250+ price tag will not work for retail, so they will be splitting the boxes up in a way similar to what you suggested in the video. However, the aggregate retail price will be quite a bit more than the $250 (w/free shipping to the US) that you pay right now on HasLab.

The new minis in the Haslab campaign are a lot more detailed than classic Heroscape figures were (which I agree with you; classic figures had very little detail).

Honestly I'll take mediocre mini's compared to them over detailing and lackluster additions, such as the low quality walls, which cant have tiles on top, or reduced water tile amounts, or jungle trees, which could have been a later addition...

What a cool comparison video! Makes me realize I should checkout WarCry someday too... One benefit of the way Heroscape does abilities, that I think you didn't mention, is that tying abilities to individual army cards allows you to come up with a bunch of different synergies between different army compositions.
@michaelchadwick1820
@michaelchadwick1820 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the ability to mix and match figures with their "army cards" is a big part of what makes Heroscape special. This video makes it sound like you can't mix and match figures from different factions in War Cry, which seems like a drawback in comparison.
@OffTheShelfBoardGameReviews
@OffTheShelfBoardGameReviews Жыл бұрын
Correct on Warcry, barring a few exceptions, like Chaos Beasts, monsters, and a couple exceptions, mostly you will stick with 1 faction for your squad. There are exceptions but they are not usually the best way to build a squad. Although some do it for the co-op rules (many versus a giant as an example).

I do like how individual heroes in Heroscape bring their own thing which is why i wanted to mention how Warcry's initiative system is very different in some aspects by allowing abilities based on unit ypes and rolls of the dice. Thanks for watching!

I liked the comparion bewegen the games, underworlds would compare interestingly too. Just some comments: Avalon Hill ist not Hasbro, they do not get all the resources they want and need from Hasbro but have ti earn their own Money and compete with other ideas, Projects, subcompanies etc. There are direct comments from the Devs what happens if the HasLab failes. Everything will be put away in a drawer, nothing comes out, no retail. Sure they could lie, but why would they? For the Fomo, Sure, but they would burn themselfes for future HasLab Campaigns. I doubt that. The Devs teasered that there will be Terrain only Packs, single unit Packs and the Like if the stuff Hits retail but combined the HasLab Thing will be better value. I would not mind if its cheaper or not but its probably not wise to wait for retail to get the stuff hoping to safe some bucks.

This campaign is going to be very interesting and the results are going to be fascinating to follow due to the ripples it could create no matter what action/inaction they decide to take. I just would like them to have considered financials for people, that is killing them. Many would have backed at a lower peoce point.

@@OffTheShelfBoardGameReviews it is a nailbiter really. Personally I'm fine with the price point, I backed things with far less value. But yes, it's a lot of money. The community is quite split on a lot of points. I really hope Avalon Hill can mend some cracks and convince Hasbro to maybe realize some community hopes. Either way, it's interesting, especially for HasLab and future Relaunches of classic games.

The question here really shouldn't be "is it worth it" but rather "is it worth 250". At least for me, because I personally don't think it is. There's too much over hype, and not enough quality deliverance. Minus the tiles, everything else just feels like a good idea gone in the wrong direction. Honestly here's how I would have done it. 1: Just reprint a tile amount similar to the RoTV master set. Maybe add some superstructure to the bottom of the big terrain so that they don't suffer from bowing... 2: Print up some more unique terrain pieces, like rocks and some trees, to help with cover and block visibility while making the battlefield look good. 3: Print up 20-30 figures maybe 5-7 unique units and the rest grunts. 4: Give us only 2 factions to start... We don't need 5-6-7 just to get interested or start playing with multiple people. 5: Reduce the price by a minimum of half. 250 is a lot to back, especially for unpainted minis, which is definitely a hard sell to anyone who played the original run. Especially because you'll have freaking rainbows dashing around the battlefield at this point. 6: For expansions, maybe focus more on unique terrain, such as pre-sculpted cliffs, and or trees bridges etc. It was the one big problem for the original run, not to have simple stuff to flesh out the battlefield. These are what would really make me excited and be willing to back the project, but I digress. We have what we have currently, and we'll see how it plays out.

This video is neglecting a lot about Heroscape and why it’s unique in comparison to other games. The customization that you can get by being able to build the maps for heroscape are much more three dimensional and visually stunning. War cry terrain is similar to D&D and so you can alway spend more to get more detail. With heroscape they have options that can be used in several different ways and are not a one time application terrain type. The terrain also has characteristics that change the battle and benefits certain figures more than others or hinders figures who cannot fly or walk on lava etc. Also stating that once you strip away the cards figure then everyone has an attack so it doesn’t matter if they are a robot or ninja. That is not accurate because the heroscape figures have Race, Class, Personality, size and a hit zone that greatly affect game play by interacting with other figures and using the terrain to your advantage. Overall respectfully, I think that comparing the games isn’t practical and that you can’t really say there is a game that is cheaper and very similar when it isn’t even close to how heroscape is played and the unlimited possibilities heroscape provides with map customization. If you would like to see an example of a heroscape customized map you can check out the Mines of Moria map on my channel. As far as hasbro stuff that is interesting and I guess we will see if you are right.

Came in the comments to write the same thing. I'm not a big fan of some design choices of the new campaign, but clearly Warcry doesn't have half the charm and "usability" the original Heroscape has.

It is going to be super interesting to see how thinngs finally shake out for the Hasbro Pulse Heroscape crowd funding campaign. I foresee a lot of ripples in the industry no matter which path Hasbro takes.
