In this Hollow Knight review/retrospective/analysis/critique, we'll take a look at why I consider Hollow Knight one of my "desert island" games, why the map system, exploration, platforming, combat, boss , and plot are so delightful, and yet also briefly looking at its flaws (hint: the answer rhymes with "tight malice").

This was one of those games that the instant I finished it I knew it was one of the greatest games I've ever played. I was taken in by it almost immediately thanks to the art style, music, and creepy bug-world. I admit that the first hour or two are a little slow, but in retrospect I feel like it's paced perfectly. Especially considering how the game never holds your hand. It lets things sink in naturally. I like how the game gives you options on how to progress without ever feeling like it's giving you the options. This is a masterclass in intuitive game design. As challenging as the platforming in the White Palace is I'm a glutton for punishment so I actually enjoyed that part... it took me a while to get through it, but I felt so accomplished by the end of it. I don't blame you for hating that section though. This game a beautiful work of art. Desert island game for sure.

If White Palace was more of a challenge that you could do for "fun" as opposed to locking the true ending behind it, I'd have less issues with it.

Interesting thing is that I love the White Palace the Path of Pain on the other hand is a Pain the one thing I don't like is that the regular enemies become pushovers by the end and it felt almost boring to have to fight them in subsequent playthroughs. There are still exceptions (like Deepnest which is my favourite area still creeped me out in my 2nd play)

I didn’t like the game at first. I labeled it a cheap Metroidvania clone by hour 2. I decided to give it another chance, and the more time I put in, the more it would give back. There was this one time I was playing it on the train, a fellow switch gamer saw me and we both gushed how amazing the game was. Love/hated it’s old school difficulty, but it was rewarding when I overcame those challenges. I totaled over 110 hours on the game, and I believe it’s even better than SotN. Truly a remarkable feat by Team Cherry.

Good video! Makes me want to play again. I agree that this is one of the greatest Metroidvanias. However, having to find the mapmaker was my least favorite part. It actually made me quit a couple hours in the first time around as wandering around blind just gave me anxiety. By the time I found him in each area I was just mad, not happy or feeling accomplished. I did go back to the game about a year later though and the rest of the great stuff allowed me to push through it. It also helps that as you play you are discovering new areas that need maps less often.

I think the story should've been slightly less vague. I wasn't as engaged in the events of the game as I probably should've been. E.g. when I got to the final boss, it didn't feel like a revelation of any kind, just a big, bright bug that PROBABLY was very important. Just a few more "hard facts" throughout the story would've improved my engagement. They could've done more flashbacks, for example. After defeating each boss.

K, here we go. Cornices in Fog Canyon. This was the least fun experiences for me, but it wasn’t all that bad really. Seeing the shadow gate closing off the map really helped me remember where the shade cloak would be important once I got it though, and it was a great design choice. My personal favorite charm build is Kingsoul, Spell Twister, Shaman Stone, and Grubsong/Dream Wielder interchangeably. Very strange, I know but it’s something different and unique and opens up a whole new play style. Favorite bosses are Sister of Battle, I love the ramp in difficulty from the Mantis Lords and it is so fun. Hive Knight, the OST is amazing and the personality of the fight is great, and finally the Mantis Lords, the fight has great atmosphere and theming as well as not being too easy. And finally, my favorite fan theory is that we’re somehow seeing a stag from Hallownest in Silksong. This game is great, my personal favorite, I’ve pitched this game to almost all of my friends with varying levels of success.

I loved this game from the start. I came from more of a Dark Souls 1 background. Slow gaming, exploration, gloomy & mysterious world. It ticked all those boxes. Path of pain I skipped. Tried it for maybe an hour. Didn't spark joy. Did pretty much all the rest of the core game. Such a fun, wide world to explore.

agree on dung defender, also one of my favourite areas in the game. I have a love/hate relationship with trial of the fools but I appreciate it for its challenge--most other bosses in the game including dung defender I beat on my first try, mainly for a lack of phases. trial of the fools is so long it really tests your endurance and patience when you fail. there's a sense of progression each time you return with new charms/abilities, each time a little closer to success.

Somewhat big spoilers for HK It was pretty hard for me to get into Hollow Knight, took up until I fought the Dung Defender to really start enjoying the game. I just felt lost, I didn't know who I was, where I was, where I was supposed to go, what my goal was, it was just frustrating not knowing anything about anything. And then, the Dung Defender. He just sounded so happy and enthusiastic while he crushed me into the ground, he made me happy because he seemed to be one of the only happy bugs in the game so far. And then when I beat him I was able to access the right side of the city of tears, as well as the resting grounds. And when I met Seer, I FINALLY had a set goal; find and defeat the dreamers. I'm glad I played Hollow Knight, and I'm glad I stuck with it.

That's a really interesting story with the Dung Defender. Looking at what Team Cherry was going for, keeping the player more in the dark about where to go (especially in comparison to other metroidvanias) did lead to friends or others to drop the game from what I've seen in discussion.

i played hollow knight for the first time in 2018, played for 25 hours and i pretty much got as far as kings station and the colloseum .Then gave up Fast forward in 2021 i decided to replay it and i got to were i was +some extra upgrades and charms in 5 hours.I now have finished the game +the dlcs (i am at 107%) and i am pretty sure this is my game of the year. I think i did quit this game because i had some major pacing issues on my first playthrough.I think i was backtracking everytime i began a game session so that i make sure i didnt lose anything making me bored and searching less effectively.I do still consider that this game can have a major issue in its pacing as it leaves it up to the player and if you are not that well acustomed to metroidvanias you can take things so slow that it no longer is enjoyable. (thats as far as why i got "bored" and quit on my first playthrough

@Kezedrix Жыл бұрын
As of today, I sincerely consider Hollow Knight the GOAT metroidvania. I mean, I know a lot of fans of the genre find it overrated as hell and nowhere near the level of the classics, and will go on about how much greater Super Metroid or Castlevania SotN are. And I get it: I was like that too when the game came out and I first played it, and I simply "loved it a lot", nothing more. But then after a few years I revisited it a second time, and I started thinking. Sure, it's not a revolutionary game. It has a lot of personality, a lot of interesting ideas and systems like the maps or the charms, and the dark souls influence sets it apart, but it doesn't redefine in any way the genre like the good old classics did. But hear me out: does it need to in order to be considered the greatest? Redefining the genre, setting a landmark with a before and an after... by achieving that you leave a mark in video game history and it greatly helps to make your game memorable, but in face of the question "what is the best game in the genre?" it is actually irrelevant, it's a meta achievement. And I keep thinking, and I start adding up all that Hollow Knight does right, and I realize it's about everything. Oh yes it has some default here and there, nothing's perfect, and some people will dislike this or that aspect of the game that isn't in tune with their tastes, but all things considered the game is at least an 8/10 on every major aspect : gameplay, level design, world design, enemy design, storytelling, ambiance, music, art... I could go on. It also has tons of content, and you can really feel the passion that went into it. And let's not forget what defines a metroidvania: the feeling of exploration, with all its mystery and excitation, is so palpable, so well done! At this point I'm like "ok it's actually more than a good game, it's a very very good game! you could hardly ask for more!", and I start comparing it with the other games in the genre, old and new, and after a bit I realize, a bit surprised, that I can't actually think of a metroidvania that I played (and I did most of the big ones) that, in all objectivity, delivers as hard on as much things than Hollow Knights. And so, when asked "what is the best metroidvania ever made?", by plain comparisons of every titles that I know of, I find myself forced to answer: Hollow Knight. To date, it has the best representation of the genre. It is the GOAT.

I'm 15 hours in and i do think about quitting the game. If a game can't catch your interest after 15 hours of gameplay, there's most likely something going wrong. I've played another hour just now, and i can't believe they REDUCED the size of Deep Nest. I'm currently trying to rush through this monotonous array of identical corridors, just to arrive in the Beast's Den... only the beast wasn't there. From what i can tell, the Distant Village is a dead end for me at the moment. The last 2.5 hours of play time in Deep Nest (approximately, and i'm not going slowly!) feel like wasted time i will never get back. Exploration is well and good, but it isn't fun when 95% of the game consists of interchangable corridors and rooms. In fact, the game becomes a chore because it makes laying out everything in your head, before you get the chance to update your map, that much harder. There are some interesting things to discover for sure, but they're spread out too much. The game is most fun when you're battling bosses and warrior ghosts, you know, when things are actually happening. I don't hate the game, but it's boring as hell at times. I have no idea whatsoever how someone can play this multiple times. You mean i have to go through some of these areas again? I don't think so.

Okay, 20 hours in and i'm slowly, admittedly late, realizing that nothing in this game appears to be of consequence. You just walk around, setting your own goals, but in the end all you accomplish is kill enemies, gain Geo, Charms, Skills, and so on, but you don't actually progress in the game. You don't get the impression that all of this is leading somewhere. The last 7 hours, which is the WHOLE length of other games, i did nothing but fuck around, discovering areas that all turned out to be dead ends. I just discovered the arena, but didn't care to fight in it at first because it's most likely optional anyway. Killing the nimble bug behind it certainly was. I was planning on visiting the arena again next because i have no idea what else to do at this point, but when i realized how fucking long the way to get there was (because i STILL don't have the ability to dash great distances), i quit the game. Fuck. This. Shit.

I think HK is good, but just good. How it manages to get you actually lost in its huge map is the best part of it. The whole music design takes too much from dark souls, while its not silent like them its very muted and like only 2 tracks are any standout to me. Atmosphere in a 2D game just doesnt work as good as 3D, they made huge sacrifices in the music alone to take any of the strengths other games in the genre use.

This is the first Metroidvania that made me feel that i'm going somewhere wrong even when i go somewhere i need to go. (Well, also Dark Souls did that, but it's debatable if it's Metroidvania). Whenever game subtly suggests me going "There" i'm going anywhere but "there" to find tasty things in the corners... and then i ended up getting Dream Nail before going to Fungal Wastes because i just happened to have enough money for flashlight and i decided to explore Crystal Caves as far as i could, because i believed that i would hit a dead end... and when i got to Graveyard and got Dream Nail i was like "WTH, isn't that supposed to be a plot item?! Did i sequence break? So wait, i weren't suppoed to go to fungal wastes?! I was supposed to go there? Or wait, not there?" And after getting Mantis Claw and defeating Mantis Lords (With Base Nail, btw), i did not go to Deepnest. And i also ignored City of Tears and it's sewers. I did open City of Tears to make a shortcut to Crossroads from that though. But afterwards i have gone again towards Crystal Caves, got Super Dash... and then use it to get to Blue Lake, then down to City of Tears from that and i was like "Hmm, i guess i will be at Watcher's soon" and then found a way down that leads to a long drop down to Ancient Basin... that made me uncomfortable as heck. "Wait-wait-wait! I feel like it's a late game area, aren't i'm too early here!? I haven't awakened neither of the dreamers!" and then fought Lost Kin and got Double Jump. Then returned to City of Tears and was like "Phew, now time to awaken the Watcher Dreamer" ...and then found a way below stag station on the east that leads towards Kingdom's End. Yet again i felt "WHAT THE HELL!? I AM DEFINETELY NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!" And then fought Hornet and got King's Crest. "Hm... this is clearly a story item. ...Aren't i got it too early though?" IT WAS AMAZING. I never played another Metroidvania that made me feel this way! And i've played a lot. Including all 2D Metroids and most 2D Castlevania-Metroidvanias. And Axiom, and Blind Forest and Will of the Wisps. They never made me feel as i am actually exploring stuff on my own not being bound by story.

This is one of the best games ever. Not metroidvanias, not souls like (god I hate that term, did Dark Souls invent difficulty? I THINK NOT) Hollow Knight is simply one of the best games I have ever played.

@@sharkastic2633 Souls-likes are called this way not because of difficulty. Same as Metroid did not invent non-linear exploration platformers. As Metroidvanias are called this way for sharing exploration style of Metroid and Castlevania, same as Souls-likes are called this way for Checkpoints that make enemies respawn and giving player ability to recollect lost money by finding their corpse.

@Crimson Knight It's not just the checkpoints. Shovel Knight is by no means a "souls-like". It's specifically five things in order of importance: 1. Dodge roll with invincibility frames. 2. Stamina system. 3. Checkpoints and recoup your money/xp system. 4. Item and environment based storytelling. 5. Challenging gameplay. Not just hard, as you can easily make any game hard like kaizo games.

It’s not very similar to those games except for some mechanics. How does it look anything like the souls games? The art styles are completely different.

The term Soulslike is a bad thing in my opinion, it assumes that Dark Souls in the only good game that is hard and everything else is simply following in this footsteps. Hollow Knight is, in my humble opinion, far far better than Dark Souls.

Meteoidvania is less bad because it is the best *aspects* of Metroid and Castlevania.
