In the past 3,000 years, many populations have evolved genetic adaptations to their local environments. People in Siberia and the high arctic are uniquely adapted to survive extreme cold. The Bajau people can dive 70 meters and stay underwater for almost 15 minutes. So what are other recent changes? And will our technological innovations impact our evolution? Laurence Hurst investigates.

Something I recently learned about our evolution reason we need wisdom teeth taken out is due to the changes in our jaws. Since we have been eating softer foods our jaws have been shrinking which hasn't left the room for the wisdom teeth to grow in. This is due to not needing the teeth. The shrinking of our jaws have allowed more room for our brains to develop further.

What I would like to know is, how are motor skills developed with appendages during the process of evolution? Things like wings evolved slowly, were the connections already somehow present within the brain of the animal during that process? Is the brain hardwired for potential appendages?

I believe we have slowed down our own evolution tremendously. We have designed our lives to be as unproblematic as possible, From the tv remote through to drone delivered pizza, We are systematically taking the struggle out of life and replacing it with convenience and thus stalling our natural progress. I think with everything there is balance and the further we make strides technologically, The more we reduce our natural progression.

This is false. What is true though is that back in the day doctors used to put certain chemicals in babies eyes to kill of bacteria and infections, causing the baby to have sensitive eyes. That could've caused them to close. But human babies eyes do not have fused eyelids (like dogs e.g) after birth that they need to remain closed for days. Babies open their eyes for the first time at around 6 months, still in the belly.

There is strict natural selection within culture, so there will be genetic drift in some capacity but fitness will still strive in other areas. We no longer contend with most physical environmental pressures, but how you blend in with your society, whether you can climb the ladder socially, can take you out just as easily. Simple answer is this - if you don't leave behind children or a body of work that passes through generations, you've failed and your line is gone forever.
