Morgan Stanley believes 20 percent of global growth in the next decade will come from India. Our guest today, Princeton economist Ashoka Mody, has a different view, which he details in his new book: “India Is Broken”. He argues that there are two Indias, a successful, highly skilled and educated elite and a billion-plus population that remains very poor. Mody believes that this dangerous equilibrium is maintained by a close link between the government, big business and, in some cases, organized crime. This association produces projects that attract capital and headlines but leaves an employment deficit of over 100 million jobs.

In GDP PPP India is almost 3x poorer than China and over 5x in nominal terms. Similar amount to 20x less populated UK. Considering 85% is below the average, numbers are staggering.

@@shobhitdagur1086 According to the UN 2023’s World Happiness Report India is 126-th of 137. All of the countries below are in Africa. It was pretty similar in the previous years. If you feel differently good for you. At the end that is all that matters. There were/are civilizations older than Indus in the Middle East, South Africa, Australia or even South America. Yet it is still impressive.

_Democracy_ should be the endgame of an economy, *India* got it too soon. As long democracy thrives, India will continue to see a land of divided people, and rhetorical politicians. It doesn't matter if party X or Y or Z comes to power.

India’s huge under developed population is also an impediment to the country’s growth. In spite of being the fifth largest economy in the world, we rank 136 in per Capita income. For India to rise to a developed nation in terms of per Capita income, is a well nigh impossible goal. The extreme centralization practiced by ever government that has ruled India since Independence is another mill stone around the nation’s neck. The massive disparity in wealth among the people beggars belief. I totally agree with Dr Mody.
