Is Islam Too Harsh on Those Who Leave the Faith? | Jack Lundy asks Dr. Shabir Ally

Jack Lundy from Italy says, "An important tenet of Islam is apparently the absolution condemnation of any follower who deserts the faith for another religion. In your analysis, how far should this be understood? Some fundamentalists consider a deserter from Islam a traitor who deserves the most extreme punishment. Why can't Islam be more flexible on this point?" Watch this video for Dr. Shabir Ally's response!

Respected Shabir Aly, you rightly pointed out that the muslims predominantly overweighed the hadith or narrative of fiqh over the book of God, Quran and that's created problems more to muslims themselves and non muslims too to ratify the tenenth of Islam. Moreover, Islam is an idealogy to be taken with due conviction of one's own rational and cogent understanding. Anyone not agreed on Islamic precepts can leave faith lovingly.

@@davidcharlton5552 The Islam was gone through difficult times and Muslims are commanded to defend Muslims. If you want I can quote for you many Quranic verses and hadiths of the Prophet in the context of war, so you can write them in your comments every where on social media. If you don't like that about Islam, sorry to say that is your own problem. Qur’an says, "whoever wants, let him believe, and whoever wants, let him disbelieve". Also, Muslims have developed methodologies for extracting rulings from the Qur’an and Sunnah which difficult for you to comprehend. Furthermore, if you want to judge the history of Muslims and the Muslims' states, yes there were bad things that cannot be justified, but in general they had not reached the level of the badness of the Inquisition and the heresy carried out by the Church in Spain. THIS Man will spend more energy on Christians than spend spending more energy on Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sudan , Iran , Indonesia etc where Apostates are being killed everyday for the sake of Allah, he will never go to them and campaign about killing of Apostates. But how do you discard it if it's an authentic hadith? Doesn't that mean you have a direct contradiction that you have to somehow resolve? You can't just resolve it by ignoring on part. Also, it doesn't really make sense for it to be a contradiction anyway because for the punishment for apostasy to be considered compulsion, it must mean that fear of being put to death will prevent you from losing your belief that Islam is true, and that's just not how that works.

I recall hearing or reading somewhere that, for those who believed that apostates should be killed, the definition of apostate could be narrowed to make it hard to prove anyone's guilt in any case. Much in the same way that punishment for adultery required such a level of evidence that it was almost impossible to find someone guilty of that. However, whether people are punished for apostasy or not, I'd say the threat of punishment for merely having doubts or divergent beliefs is not good for a society. It will simply drive out the truth and make many people hypocrites.

Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah , devoutly obedient. -- al-Baqara 2:238 And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember. -- Hud 11:114 O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise. -- an-Nur 24:58 Verse 1 tells us that there is a middle prayer which means there are at least 3 prayers and doesn't mention the exact number of prayers. Verse 2 tells us that during daylight (the time gap between fajr and maghrib) we have 2 prayers (duhr and a'sr) and one when the night approaches (al-Maghrib) (see also this Fatwa): With (only) this information it's still possible that we only have 3 prayers, but Verse 3 which teaches us about the resting times mention clearly the fajr/sobh prayer and the I'sha prayer as the fajr itself is a not mentioned time in the 2 Verses before we find out we really have 5 prayers mentioned in the Quran!

I don’t read Arabic so the nearest I’ve come to “reading” the Qur’an is to read an English paraphrase. (The Meaning of the Holy Qur’an by ‘Abdullah Yusuf ‘Ali) By the time I finished reading it, it occurred to me that reading it “backward” - the Conclusion first, then Surah 114, 113, 112, etc. would give a person a quite different impression of Islam than reading it the way I did, beginning with Surah 1, then 2, then 3, etc. The same seems to be true of the way people read the Bible. Hebrews may “start at the beginning”, i.e. read Genesis first, then Exodus, etc. Most Hebrews probably don’t ever read the Gospels and the Epistles. People who aren’t Hebrew and who read Genesis first and then Exodus often fail to finish reading Exodus, let alone the next several books. People who read the Gospels first, and then the Epistles, often fail to read the rest of the Bible. Reading the books of Moses and not the Gospels would almost certainly give a person a very different view of the Bible and biblical religions than reading the Gospels but not the first books of the Bible. So my question is this: Are there schools of thought within Islam that emphasize some parts of the Qur’an more than others? Are there other schools of thought that emphasize other parts instead? If so, what can you tell us about the history of how those differing schools of thought developed? Or when? Or Where?

One can argue that if the military explanation was in fact the (only) reason for this particular law, then in current times, jurists would have abandoned that law. Now, when they still have that idea (at least some of them), it's logical to conclude that this tendency does not (only) come (and by extension, possibly was not only coming) from physical security concerns but comes from bigotry. As for the different punishments for men and women, one can say it is because in people's view women were not as much influential so their apostasy wouldn't greatly matter. As you correctly pointed out, this is an obvious example of people trying to force their ideas on God's commands. When God (swt) says يحرفون الكلم عن مواضعه it's not merely limited to ancient Jews but can happen (and has clearly happened) to everyone. In order to amend, one should first try to see/accept rampant diversions from divine law not to sanctify it. و الله اعلم

Saying there is no compulsion in religion is not a contradiction to the punishment for apostasy. If you are someone who simply no longer believes that Islam is true, you are an apostate and the existence of the apostasy punishment cannot be considered a compulsion because if it could then that means someone could remain in belief simply due to fear of being put to death and that's simply not how that works. Shabir is twisting things either deliberately or otherwise simply to make Islam look better and defend the indefensible.

Imagine a book saying in absolute words (just like what Shabir quotes) in one page and says something opposite in another page, normally we would call that a "conflicting message". But change the book to Quran and quote something like killing a person is like killing the whole humanity and turn a few pages and see that there are some exceptions ( like murderers and listen to this " spreading disorderliness in the community" whatever that means. What "Peaceful religion" followers in the west are trying to show is the nature of a follower of this religion when they are fewer in number and do not possess enough might, wait a few decades and when they find themselves with enough numbers, expect what the Franch, German and Europeans in general are finding themselves in. They are taught this in every page of their holy book, to look at followers of other religions to be Najis (less than Human) so dont be surprised when they treat you" less than human", its not a bug but its the feature. killing one human should be actually taken as killing one of their fellow followers, Peaceful religion is peaceful for people who follow this religion everyone else is either Najis, Khafir, Murthad, and are not worthy of any respect, just look at what happened to Israelis in October 2023, see what they do with the captives( men will suffer death but just imagine what would happen to women captives, captured, paraded and God only knows what they would do to the women).

Islam is not a special name. In English, it is called submission. Anyone who believes in the oneness of "God the King of the World" and the Day of Judgment is considered to be a submitter. The call of our "Lord" from other religions is to believe in the Qur'an and to follow Abraham, who called us "Submitters". Islam today is evil and corrupted by the hadiths and traditions, and the polytheists who follow Muhammad. That is why our "LORD" tells us about Jesus and all the other prophets who were also "Submitted". They did not know Arabic to call themselves "Muslims"! our "LORD" wants the other religions to use the wisdom of the Quran, and not to join the polytheists today, who call themselves "Muslims"! 22:67 (Pilgrimage), (5:48 The feast), (22:78 Pilgrimage)
