I strongly agree with your advice that everyone should be called by their name. I don't want to call anyone with a suffix sir/mam attached to it, even if they are seniors in age or whatever position they occupy. I believe even the marginalised should call a police officer/ collector by his name. That would be the real empowerment and redeeming of self respect.

But mentioning someone as sir or ma'am is polite way of giving respect in English.I think there is nothing wrong in that.. அதுவே நீங்க தழிழ் ல வாங்க, போங்க னு பன்மை ல சொல்வதுதான் மரியாதையாக இருக்கும்.. நம்மைவிட வயதில் மூத்தவர்களுக்கும், நம்மைவிட வயதில் சிறியவராக இருந்தாலும் அவர் படித்த படிப்பிற்கு மரியாதை தர வேண்டும் என்பது என்னோடைய கருத்து.. இதில் குறைந்துபோக ஒன்றுமில்லை. (Note : அவர்கள் நாம் மரியாதை தரும்படி நடந்து கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும், எந்த சூழ்நிலையிலும் நம்முடைய சுயமரியாதையை விட்டு கொடுக்க கூடாது, Give respect and take respect..)

@@kartickjr24 It's not the age/ education here decide the sir/madam controversy. In the name of age/education the higher class uses this privilege for many years. It's called the colonial mindset. Let's say, a complainant/petition giver/ worker approaches a police inspector/ RDO/ Shop owner respectively. Can the former call the latter by his name? Isn't it unjust? Do you really think the age/education deserve the sir/ madam or anything else? Here it is the authority/ class divide which decides it. They are perpetuating the same in the name of culture/ respect or whatever etc. I would challenge you, can you call the police by his name? Will they be okay with it? A clear NO. How you are saying that calling sir/madam is your right, in the same way I also want to call them by their name. But they are getting offended because they don't want to give up their privilege. So always fight for equality/ self respect.
