Smoked for years - I for one could take it or leave it. Not an addiction for me. I enjoyed it. Used it when I was stressed or when I felt like it which was not often. Growing up I knew a few Priests who smoked and liked a Martini once in a while. Ask, pray, for discernment keeping in mind that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Ghost. Thank you Father Ripperger for your wisdom - you are truly blessed. Praying for all Priests to attain such insight and clarity. God bless and help us in these dark days of tribulation. Fight the good fight - gird your loins and pray unceasingly.

Props to you. I was always envious of friends who were like that with smoking. I had to quit as a courtesy for my wife, but now I'm addicted to an E-cigarette (w/nicotine). I've quit smoking three times cold turkey, but now after watching this video I'm convinced I have to learn to quit at any time even the vape. I had to conquer alcohol first though, :-) moderation never came naturally to me. If I can beat alcohol I can beat nicotine I would assume, but they are very different.

I would like to have a smoke with Fr Ripperger. This is another hard teaching by Father Ripperger. The thing that needs to be emphasized (no pun intended) is that 90% of smokers are cigarette addicts who smoke at least one pack a day. This is like being an alcoholic. I heard that cigarettes were purposely made to get people hooked on nicotine. Cigarettes offer the least flavor of tobacco products and are the most expensive in the long run. Wine has carcinogens but most drinkers don’t polish a bottle off every night. Bottom line is tobacco use in moderation is ok but that can be especially difficult with cigarettes. Pipe is my choice. Cigars are usually too expensive as well as pretentious.

@@rachealbrimberry8918 The body does not naturally produce nicotine. Where did you get that information? Nicotine is a naturally produced alkaloid in the nightshade family (plants). The brain has nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, but the endogenous agonist for these receptors is acetylcholine, not nicotine; they aren't named "nicotinic" because they are for nicotine but just because nicotine happens to act on them. Many other human receptors are named similarly, based on discovering the molecular basis for sensitivity to exogenous compounds. About 10 to 15 percent of smokers develop lung cancer -- although they often die of other smoking-related causes like heart disease, stroke or emphysema. Lung cancer is also known to kill people who never smoked or who gave up years ago. 1 in 2 now develope cancer (A lot of non-smokers included in that too), which has vastly increased over the years because of factors like processed foods, chemicals in cleaning products etc. If one would argue it's a sin to smoke because it damages the body, then you would have to claim the same every time you ate a processed burger or used a cleaning product or deodrant. Processed meats including ham, bacon, salami and frankfurts as a Group 1 carcinogen (known to cause cancer) which means that there's strong evidence that processed meats cause cancer. Eating processed meat increases your risk of bowel and stomach cancer. Though, God understands that most people cannot afford to eat organic, the same way as God would understand if smoking helped this gentleman with tourette's syndrome. My nan smoked 40 a day for most of her life up until the age of 80, when she developed on-set dementia and forgot she was a smoker. She lived until 93. Genetics are at play when it comes to cancerous mutations. 1 in 5 people who develope lung cancer haven't smoked a cigarette in all their lives, though, I suspect this statistic is higher in reality, my dad knew a nurse who worked in the NHS and treated people with lung cancer and she claimed more than half were non-smokers. I am not endorsing smoking here, though what I will say is, a lot of the cancers people suffer with are down to exposure to toxic chemicals in everyday life. Air pollution in places like London will kill you faster than smoking, will you stop driving your car? Cease to use cleaning products? Stop eating processed meat? You have to first take the plank out of your own eye. People are aware it's bad for them without you preaching at them. Without a cigarette, this man above may swear uncontrollably and may even assault people on account of his ticks. Who are you to say whether the risks outweigh the benefits? Have you lived with the syndrome or lived with someone who has it? If you cannot breathe when there's smoke in the air, then it is best you don't smoke because you clearly have weak lungs, whether genetic or caused by enviromental factors, but you're coming across as preachy when you do not know what position the other person is in.

Trappist monks come to mind, Luis. They brew fine beer with the intent of directing proceeds towards the upkeep of their monasteries. This would in turn allow them to maintain their vocation as religious within religious communities. Here in Houston Texas, there is a bar called the Charity Bar. It is a hip, trendy watering hole - but curiously enough, the owner, who remains anonymous, after paying all the dividends and his employees, donates all proceeds towards charity. Not sure of this has provided some food for thought, but I knew I was not alone in thinking about the question you posed above. Hope this is some food for thought.

Sex is the same thing , passing up good partner after good partner till you either marry a monster or die alone. The only true satisfaction is to take away this "natural" and materialistic world and the more you take yourself away from it the more satisfying it is. Go figure right? Well our Lord knows and knew always, its that simple. Catechism . Also the only salvation is the vehicle of salvation the Catholic church Regardless of how the evil one makes you perceive it.

I adore Fr. Ripperger & take his advice and knowledge very seriously with all spiritual warfare talks… but I have to respectfully disagree on the smoking issue (unless it’s 100% pure / organic) because not only do cigarettes (most especially American cigarettes) have POISONS (literally rat poison & arsenic so they burn faster & people buy more) but toxic substances in cigarettes harm the body & lungs severely, which is a sin. Maybe cigars are less toxic, but cigarettes are a definite NO.

As off putting as the priest's flippancy is, I couldn't agree more with him on this issue. Smoking is like alcohol and sex. All of these things are addictive, and can lead to bodily harm especially when they are abused. They have had devastating social consequences, but not because they are bad in themselves. The consequences come from the fact that the people who use these things aren't grounded in the cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, temperance and fortitude). As an aside, that's why prohibition always fails to curb their abuse. Moderation and context are key. Almost anyone can smoke a cigar once a year at new years, and they could live to a million without experiencing any negative health side effects. As the priest mentioned, tolerance varies from person to person. If you smoke when you know you have asthma, or you know you're starting to get addicted to it, then you're headed into the sin territory. To call these things like alcohol, sex, or tobacco sinful isn't Catholic, the idea that they are bad in themselves is a protestant idea particularly embedded in American culture from its puritan legacy. That's not to say that they aren't dangerous...any time you engage in one of these activities, you're playing with fire, and walking on a knife's edge between the heights of human happiness and virtue (the creation of new life, clarity of mind, cheerful fellowship/recreation etc and their accompanying pleasures), and the depths of suffering and deprivation (alcoholism, unwanted pregnancies, lung cancer etc etc etc).

Cigarette smoke ingredients resemble what a firefighter faces when he enters a chemical fire in a burning building. Which is why they wear oxygen masks and air tanks. Ask yourself how this stew of toxic gases can be good for your health: nicotine (the addictive drug that produces the effect people are looking for and one of the harshest chemicals in tobacco smoke) hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, ammonia and benzine. Father's talk reminds of the old Jack Benny commercials for Lucky Strike cigarettes. "The cigarette recommended by more doctors than any other." Talk about fake news! Partial truths are also dangerous thing. Father Ripperger should view the autopsy lung photos of chronic smokers. Black and covered with tar instead of pink. Which is why 50% of heavy smokers end up with chronic heart disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease The latter doesn't kill you all at once. You die a slow agonizing death that takes many years where you can hardly breathe. My foster father almost died several times and revived just in time before he finally succumbed after 15 years! Life isn't much fun going around with a hole in your throat and a breathing tube. Whatever benefits smoking may have for other diseases, the eventual 50% fatality rate associated with it would indicate it to be a sin of being negligent about your health. Then there's the moral aspect of addiction. How many smokers can just quit? The usual response (denial) is: "I can quit anytime I want, hell, I've done it 100 times. Then we have the issue of alcohol. Alcohol is a "good" for those who can handle it in moderation, but not everyone can, and it's not just a matter of willpower for some. Giving small children alcohol to drink seems highly inadvisable as it encourages early drinking - and probably has little effect once they arrive at college pubs and parties. It certainly didn't help me any. Whatever the case, Father Ripperger fails to include the fact that there's a large number of people who simply cannot safely drink. It controls them, not the other way around - FROM THE FIRST DRINK! Whether you call them alcoholic or something else is a moot point. They can't SAFELY drink because ANY alcohol, for them, is a mood changing psycho-spiritual toxin. As evidenced by the millions of people who have gone to AA after discovering that they couldn't control their drinking, that it controlled them. And that includes many priests who needed something outside of the Catholic Church to make God's grace of recovery take root in their lives.

I have noticed that many traditional catholics are drinking wine and that breaks my heart because they even think that there is no problem in it. How one person can drink wine if he is in the Immaculate Heart of Mary ? Why did St.Paul tell to St.Timothy to use a little wine ? (the verb used here is 'use' not 'drink'). Please meditate that word, 1 Timothy 5:23. Did any drunkard start drinking with a bottle of wine? Did anyone start drinking to become like a drunkard? Those who are drinking wine, will find an answer. How the wine will help the soul to go to heaven?

Disagree. Knowing that smoking contains nicotine, a highly addictive drug that renders you a slave to a cigarette is 100% sinful every time. Flirting with the addictive ness of the drug is a sinful act.

Sugar is more addictive than nicotine, is it a sin to eat ice cream or even fruits because perhaps there is a chance you might become a slave to it? The addiction is the fault of the user, not the substance, and it would only be a sin if you know that you have no self-control in relation to tobacco.

@@teamfortresspewp6453 Fake news. Everybody who smokes becomes addicted if done long enough. but...I've eaten countless blueberries and captain crunch as a kid in my day. If you told me tomorrow that I would never eat a blueberry again, it wouldn't phase me one bit, and I haven't had Captain Crunch or any cereal for that matter since 30 years ago. I don't remember going thru physical detox. Fruit is necessary for life.

@@FLpalm I could tell you from personal experience the same thing about cigarettes. I've smoked my share of them and not once did I have an urge to smoke again when I stopped for a period of time. Neither did I go through a physical detox either. If you are prone to losing control of yourself in relation to tobacco, then don't smoke. Clearly you are not prone to losing control over yourself in relation to sweets, but there are indeed people who are and it takes a lot of control for them not to sin in relation to them. Not everyone is the same, as Ripperger himself has stated.

@@teamfortresspewp6453 That's the same logic as saying I've tried cocaine several times in college, but I didn't get hooked. I promise you, if you continued to use cocaine or cigarettes, you would be hooked. They are both a drug that can't be used like you would a glass of wine every day.

The wine in the time of Jesus was deluted with water, He turned WATER into wine, it was not an alcoholic drink, it was an unfermented grape juice. We call it wine.

Victoria Moss We know that wine was an alcoholic drink in the Old Testament. Genesis 9 [20]And Noe, a husbandman, began to till the ground, and planted a vineyard.[21] And drinking of the wine was made drunk, and was uncovered in his tent. Proverbs 20: [1] Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith shall not be wise. Where in the bible does it say the wine in Jesus' time was diluted?

Here is proof for you: John 2:6 Jesus is at the wedding of Cana and at his mother's request turns water into wine and has it taken to the chief steward. The chief steward, remarking on the excellent quality of the wine, says to the bridegroom: "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have had too much to drink, then the poor wine, but you have kept the good wine for last." Clearly this miracle (Jesus' very first!) was performed when the wedding guests had consumed large portions and in fact drank all the wine that was there and Jesus made more wine and gave them even more to drink!Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have had too much to drink, then the poor wine, but [Jesus has] kept the good wine until now! - See more at: www.redletterchristians.org/jesus-drunkard/#sthash.drUa9rHA.dpuf

Hon, they didn't have refrigerators back then. Try storing grape juice in the desert and see how long it stays unfermented. Even if it could, the dangers of mould wouldn't be worth it. Alcoholic drinks were means of sanitizing water; that's why people made a big deal when someone would only drink water.
