To determine if a reaction is spontaneous, use this formula to find Delta G. Gibbs Free Energy is NEGATIVE for spontaneous reactions.
You can also determine above which TEMPERATURE the reaction will be spontaneous. Check it out!

what you said on 4:00 is wrong, if delta H is positive and delta S is negative, there is no temperature that will make that spontaneous

Not true. Just do the math. If the T is high enough, then S and T together will be a bigger value than H, making its value negative

He said you can drive any reaction to spontaneity if you push temperature high enough, but I thought that exothermic reactions occur less when temperature is higher because of Le Chatelier's Principle...

SHouldn't the symbol be greater than or equal to? That would include 384. The way you have it written down is 385 or higher.
@tylerjanssen7535
@tylerjanssen7535 8 жыл бұрын
+Jorge Padua No, if it is at 384, Delta G will be perfectly equal to 0 which is equilibrium and not spontaneous.

Both DeltaH and DeltaS are functions of temperature, how do I find T if all I have are the nought values (T=25C) for deltaH and deltaS from a table?
@chemistNATE
@chemistNATE 4 жыл бұрын
You're PROBABLY supposed to assume that DeltaH and DeltaS don't change *much* with temperature. Use the value of DeltaH and DeltaS from the table, and set DeltaG=0, then solve for T to find the temperature at which it becomes sponstaneous.

I understand the math for these problems, but I don't get the difference between spontaneous reaction and non spontaneous reactions. Why does a negative g value mean that it is spontaneous?
@soumyajitchandra3914

dStotal = dSsystem + dSsurroundings = dSsys + dqsurr/Tsurr (-dq of system = dq of surr) =dSsys + (-dH)/Tsurr ( dq = dH under isobaric conditions) Or, TdStotal = TdSsys - dH = -dG Or, -TdStotal = dG For spontaneous process, dStotal = +ve So, dG = -ve The reverse follows for spontaneous process. A rough idea.... Note: The d's stand for delta and H for enthalpy...G for gibb's energy and T for temperature

Okay. So, therefore, to a bigger and (to me) more interesting question: Isn't the simplest way to convey the idea of how complex living systems evolved, making order out of chaos, that of an energy trap? The heat energy of the sun being a garden hose spraying a rockery that catches water at different levels of potential energy above the ground can be analogised as exciting molecules that are "caught" at stable higher energy configurations (the negative delta G of chemistry). Then it's down to probability, evolutionary theory and an enormous time scale to get to chlorophyll, glucose, etc, etc... Temporary pockets of negative entropy if you will.
