Today I am reviewing The GlenAllachie 8 year old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. In the past I've already reviewed the GlenAllachie 12 year, 15 Year and 10 Year old Cask Strength, and when I saw this 8 Year old I wondered if it really had a place in the GlenAllachie range. After finding it for a very reasonable price I figured I should take the plunge and see what 8 year old GlenAllachie Single Malt is made of. Bottled at 46% ABV, unchill-filtered and natural colour is this whisky yet another beauty from Billy Walker? Also, how does the GlenAllachie 8 Year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky compare to the much loved GlenAllachie 12 Year old? Watch the video to find out whether I'd recommend this whisky for your shelf at home. Cheers 🍻

That 8 pleasantly surprised me, glad you like it too. Yeah the 12 is really solid but 8 is very very good, cheers Matt!

Billy Walker took over Glenallachie in July 2017. So the 8 year old has had more Billy Walker influence than the 12! Isn't he a cask master? $65 CAD is a great price.

He really works some magic Dileep! Spent most of it's life post re-casking is a great point. Yeah, I'd definitely grab it again for $65 CAD! Cheers buddy 🥃

Thanks for sharing thoughts on these two. I agree, there is a lot of wood tech here. Read Gregs comment and that is certainly worth considering. Also, wild. I can get the 8 for $60. Not sure why it's $85 out your way. Perfect idea for bringing on a fishing trip. Very cool. Cheers!

Thanks for checking out the video Jon! Greg is always incredibly insightful and makes some great content. I had been considering what he had written and I certainly prefer the more elegant approach with a lighter wood touch, I do still enjoy the wood engineering Billy Walker pulls off. Wood tech can still be good tech haha 😄 Perhaps I am predisposed to having an appreciation of this style becaue the first Scotch I loved in University was Billy's Glendronach 12 year old. As for price, awesome price at $60 Jon! I got it for $65 in Alberta but the price for this at Craft Cellars regular price right now is $85! The actual price for the GlenAllachie 8 year is not good here in B.C. Jon...$96 + 15% tax for a total of $110.50 all in. And they wonder why we purchase from Alberta. Cheers friend 🥃

@@whiskyonthewestcoastAh, the old school Glendronach 12. I miss that release. I think wood tech can certainly be good tech, but also great to realize where the heavy lifting is. Take care!

Yeah, the 10CS stole the heart of many GlenAllachie fans. Did you have a favourite batch? Mine out of the 2,4,5,6,7,8 so far was batch 4, followed closely by batch 5. Cheers Sandy 🥃

Its still at the lower price end of the market here thank god as the 12 is just about my favourite go-to whisky . Good to hear there is something else reasonable price coming in in their range too.

If the 12 is still at the "lower price end" I'd stick with it. The 8 is solid, but I miss my $60CAD bottles of GlenAllachie 12 Year old lol. Cheers John! 🥃

Hi Matt, personnally I still struggle with almost all their current core range (I know, I'm not going to be "popular" saying that, but I don't care), which comes across still too much for me as a "wood tech" range & brand currently (with almost systematic use of that "damned virgin oak") & take over on their previous style. That said, while I struggle to connect with the 12 yo, for some strange reason the only time I tried this 8 yo (last year, one time so not enough to assess it, while I had a full sample of the 12 yo), I liked it better than the 12, but it is to be taken with reservations. Strangely too, last year at WLP, the whisky I preferred in their stand was their blended scotch whisky 15 yo "White Heather", showing for me more harmony & complexity & overall profile wise more to my liking. Now to answer your question, the only (& favorite of everything I tried from them so far) Glenallachie I have in my collection is the 35 yo bottled by The Speciality Drinks Ltd, nowadays called Elixir Distillers I.B./TSMOS, special 10 th Anniversary of TWE release (1975-2010), a first fill sherry cask whisky...(WB18827). Maybe I've been used to too much quality, mind you ? 🤣

They do seem to really rely on the Virgin Oak and a whole bunch of woodtech, and it certainly isn't the most elegant or refined style of whisky, though I do think it is an approachable one if only a bit too simple. I think my appreciation for it comes from the fact that the first whisky I really loved was Glendronach 12 back in 2011/2012, which really relied on the cask in alot of ways as well. I do think those Glendronach bottlings had the additional assistance of still being from a direct fired still, and were able to stand up to the casks a bit better than GlenAllachie can. I'm excited for what the long fermentations will be able to do and perhaps the use of first fil; ex-bourbon for a bit. In regards to your 35 Year Old GlenAllachie all I can say is sacré bleu that is one hell of a whisky. Is there such a thing as being too used to quality :p Cheers Greg 🥃

yep @@whiskyonthewestcoast I had a bottle of the Glendro 12 a long time ago, gorgeous stuff, the replacement one is opened & as it is from 2013, I know it is a 18 yo...😀 (no virgin oak in there though, so for me it doesn't compare to the Glenallachies). I also have the Cask Strength batch 1, my fav...Yeah I'm liking a lot several distilleries doing long fermentation, one being French & a current favorite of mine (TOS Distillerie/Artesia single malt you can see in my latest video). Cheers !

@GregsWhiskyGuide Thise overage Glendronach releases are quite something. And yes, thankfully no V.O. treatment on those. Was that one of the French distilleries you broke tried at Whisky Live Paris? There were so many it was hard for me to remember! Some good French whisjh representation this year 👌

@@whiskyonthewestcoast Yes I already covered Artesia in my channel & had to postpone an interview of them in French (caught a painful cold last week but thankfully it is finishing now, so will celebrate my birthday which was today (I mean the 10) later on...some uncorking projects delayed, but not for long ! Yes French are coming on strong this year & you'll hear about them in my channel again...

are the 8 and 12 as fruity as the 15
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 9 ай бұрын
The 12 is just as fruity and has, in my opinion, a better balance between the rich and earthy tones of leather, chocolate, coffee, and the orange, raisin, prunes jammy stewed fruits ect. The 8 has more honey/malt/butterscotch toffee notes paired with more reserved orange, raisin and spice. Hope this helps John! Cheers 🥃
