Is It Hard to Drive a 5th Wheel: If you are looking for tips to drive a 5th wheel you are at the right place! Phil faces his fear and drives a 5th wheel for the first time. Is driving a 5th wheel is as hard as it looks? Can anyone learn to drive a 5th wheel? We hope so because Phil is hoping driving a fifth wheel RV is as easy as driving a motorhome.

one tip for backing a fifth wheel and bumper hitch trailer is to put you hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then move your hand in the direction that you want the back of the trailer to go.
@brucefay5126
@brucefay5126 3 жыл бұрын
True, but that is only the beginning of the story and the rest of the story never gets told. Once the back of a trailer (5th wheel or bumper pull) starts to move in that direction if you maintain the wheel in that direction the angle between the trailer and the tow vehicle will continue to change (get smaller) until you jackknife the trailer. Think about how your steer tires are turned when making a turn going forward. Once you have the trailer moving around to the left or right you have to return the wheel to the center or slightly the other way to maintain that radius of turn.

Hey Chad, that was one of the best and simplest explanation to understand how to maneuver a fifth wheel, "Think of the whole truck as the front wheels of the fifth wheel trailer". That is fantastic!,!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job guys. Phil, a trick I learned when driving big rigs was to steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. From the bottom to make the tail turn left you push the wheel left, two go right push right. That way you don't have to remember left to go right and right to go left which is what you have to do when you steer from the top. But great job.

I can’t believe this channel doesn’t have a million subs yet. I’ve been dealing with multiple deaths in the family. Most recent was my mom on the 6th of this month and I’ve just been tuned out of so much. So it’s my first time back on your channel in a few months and I’m shocked to be honest I never looked at the sub count. You guys are some of my favorite youtubers. It all depends on what you get used to. I've been towing trailers for 50+ years, starting with pulling a hay wagon with a tractor on my grandpa's farm when I was a kid and currently tow a 24+ foot boat trailer at least several times per week, so pulling and backing a trailer has pretty much become second nature. That being said, I'm sure there would still be a learning curve pulling a 5th wheel since the pivot point is in a different location. The first time I got behind our "new to us" Class A, however, it was a TOTALLY different experience and harkened back to my days as a bus driver when I was in high school (and, yes, high school students driving the school bus was a real thing back in the day!). It quickly became second nature after the first several thousand miles. I have to agree with Phil that the ability to grab something to eat or drink, or go to the bathroom without having to stop at a restaurant or rest area is FANTASTIC!!

We tow a 31' 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F350 single rear wheel axle. We very seldom have trouble driving in traffic, going into parking lots, fuel stations and rv sites. When we had our 30' motorhome, it was different. The motorhome moves as one unit and challenging to manipulate/articulate when in tight spaces. You just have to get the experience behind the wheel to get comfortable.

with a 5th wheel/pull behind, use the bottom part of the steering wheel. then you will turn the wheel the same as the direction you want your trailer to go. try it. it works. Go left -->turn bottom of the wheel left. Go right --> turn the bottom of the wheel right.

Hand on the bottom of the wheel, turn in the direction you want the trailer to go. Follow that rule and you will always be successful. I know you guys had a wide open area with cones, but it's always a good practice to have your significant other on the blind side with a radio or cell phone (and cell phones can have a short delay) watching for clearance. Some of the engine noise in that environment is the fan clutch engaging. Our 2017 F350 towing a 40ft Montana will pretty much roll off at idle on a level area. Great fun for all of you. Looking forward to Changing Lanes video!

Looks like you will be hitting that 100K mark any day now. I have never towed a 5th wheel, but I have towed a lot of commercial trailers that had goose neck hitches, so I imagine it will be similar enough to be comfortable with it. The sheer size of those Class A's is intimidating, but after seeing this, and Changing Lane's video, it might be easier than I think it is. Great idea the two channels had to do this, very good information.

Many years ago, when I was a young Lieutenant, my driver broke his leg the day we were supposed to redeploy from an exercise to home base. We were returning on a C-130, and it would be a hot load, meaning the aircraft would land, taxi over to us, and we would load the aircraft with the engines running. I had to drive the 1/4 ton (Jeep) pulling a trailer and back it into the aircraft. I was having a difficult time, made even more so because the C-130 loadmaster was screaming at me for taking so long, “Do you have any f..king idea how much fuel we’re burning while you’re d..king around!!!!” Of course, he had no way of knowing I wasn’t the assigned driver, but ever since then I have nightmares about backing a trailer!

Been there done that Brother! Back in the 70, I used to work in an Air Force Tactical Reconnaissance mobile Photo Processing and Interpretation Facility. All of our equipment and workspace were built into air mobile shelters with detachable wheels that convert them into trailers. They were just able to fit into a C-130 ramp door. And of course the web seats barely cleared the shelter walls and tires. Three guesses where we had to sit. Anyway we were in a similar situation trying to hit a tight chock time and it was not going well getting the blasted thing up the ramp straight. Unbeknownst to us the loadmaster had opened the side door and left it up while we were maneuvering the shelter. That side door slides up and inward on a track following the curve of the fuselage. We were all so focused on getting the shelter up the ramp that nobody saw the door. It took overnight to get the door repaired and back on the track.

Good job Phil, having hauled a 35' fifth wheel and a driving a 34' Tiffin Allegro, I was much more comfortable with the fifth wheel.

Good job Phil! Remember you are learning on one of the largest 5th wheels they make. If you get comfortable with Chad and Tara’s toy hauler, there’s nothing you can’t drive!

What a great idea for this video. Would like to see this comparo with a smaller travel trailer (not a 5th wheel) and a class A gasser coach. Great job!

Great job!! The best advice my husband gave me was if I want the fifth wheel to go right turn the truck wheel left. So if you need right turn left and if you need left turn right. It’s so confusing but every time I park I say it over and over lol AND just act like the 20 people yelling about what you need to do are not there lol the first time I parked the fifth wheel I had my husband, park manager, other campers...trying to help and I seriously got so confused! My husband just told me to imagine it was just me and him there and it went so smooth!

Use the bottom of the steering wheel to back up. If you want the trailer to move right, move the hand on the bottom right.

Yeah, that's my biggest fear when I eventually get a 5th wheel -- not backing it up, per se, but doing it front of an *_audience!_* 😬

Really loved this video. Our TT is a bumper pull 28 footer and don’t see us going much bigger but I love those Momentum’s and think I would load up the trailer with cameras to help with lane changes and backing up. Of course, having another set of eyes (your spouse) really helps and it is always good for both to be able to drive the vehicle, even if only one is the main driver. Keep up the great videos. We subscribe to both channels!

Subscribed. I've followed changing lanes for a while now, but this crossover brought me to your channel. We are a 5th wheel family because we love the room to stretch out with our family with kids, but we've always been curious with Class A's and the freedom to relax, and most notably keep on driving instead of stopping every time someone needs a bathroom break. Interested if the reduced space inside is worth the comfort in the drive. Looking forward to watching more of your adventures!

"The whole truck is the front wheel of the vehicle." Hands down the BEST statement ever on towing a 5th wheel. I recently upgraded from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel. Driving away from the dealership was the first time I ever towed a 5th wheel, so I was nervous and watched as many youtube videos as I could. I then practiced for hours in an empty parking lot. You're one statement is better than anything else anyone has said.

Enjoyed the video! We’re actually getting ready to sell or trade in our 5th wheel for a class A. Phil is right, there is more things to pay attention to when backing up a 5th wheel. My wife and I are looking to gain the perks that you mentioned of owning a class A. Keep up the good work!

Phil, you are brave. That is a big rig. Well done. Do you have towing experience, or are you and Chad just great instructors? Really liked the subject. Thank you for the Covid concern. It's important. Great video.
