Everyone’s telling you these days that you need to learn to code. Yes it is a great career path and the world absolutely needs more programmers. But is it actually realistic for you to learn to code nowadays, or has the window of opportunity passed? Has coding become so difficult that only the smartest people can actually learn enough to make a career out of it?
Ten years ago I taught myself how to code while working a full-time job. Since then, I’ve become a developer at Google and I’ve also trained millions of people to code through my website at SFDC99.com. This is my analysis of the programming learning journey today versus ten years ago.

I'm an admin but recently we have requirements that requires coding and I am slowly getting better with triggers and apex. Triggers are so fun and I would recommended for everyone to learn at least triggers because with validation rule you are restricted. For example I had so many scenarios where I had to traverse from Parent -> Child to throw an error and obviously with validation rules you can only traverse from Child -> Parent. It's fun when you actually understand how the code works. Obviously you would need a mentor to make things easier for you. Unfortunately, I am alone and my only friend is google.

David...I really appreciate the trail you've literally carved for people like me to come along and walk at my own pace. I didn't use data dumps, I took 8 months (with a list of shit storms going on), 4 tries, but I passed the ADM201 EXAM tonight. Between you and Mike Wheeler, you really helped fill gaps and give me a career path forward. If you read this, send me a note with a few of your favorite lunch & dinner spots, when I'm in a position to send you some materialized gratitude, you'll know. Thanks dude. & When the next conference happens, I'll be on a hunt for that fist bump.

My husband has the Pluralsight subscription for years now. I still remember him saying to open it and see if I like any courses in any domain. His choice was Java as he is a Java developer and he tried to teach me how to code a hundred times but I did not want to be a developer. I am salesforce certified administrator But all of a sudden after watching so much videos in ur channel, I wanted to try at least how it would feel like to code and know actually how the code works. Yesterday I started your course ‘Absolute beginners guide’ in Apex academy and just created another dev edition in salesforce. I’m very excited to keep moving forward and to know what this course teaches me. My husband never believes me if I really end up mastering apex 🤞🏻😂… The point is you are a true inspiration. Thank you so much for creating such a helpful videos. I always wonder how you pack so much words in a 8 min video😃.. I have already decided my next learning path ‘ how to talk like David’ 😅.. not kidding..

This is so very true. Noticed David’s fast speed soon as I hit the first vid of his. He’s like an easy 1.25 if not 1.5 speed of your average KZfaqr, proof of tight logic and high IQ if you ask me lol. I’m a subscriber now. Saw that David’s last vid was posted 9 months ago, wonder what happened to him and this channel? Hope to see more great content!

@@dvdkliu That’s insane! First of all congrats David! I’m mother of 2 kids myself and I totally understand the importance of being there for them in their earlier years. Never expected such a fast reply from you yourself! Thank you! I was just at your SFDC99 site just finished watching your vid about “anyone can code”. I’m a biotechnology major, then 7 yrs Sales experience in the Beauty/PersonalCare industry, then 8 yrs stay at home mom. Definitely thinking of going back to work again. Never heard of Salesforce until earlier tonight, or night of July20 a friend dragged me to a seminar. After that’s done, your channel was the first YT content I clicked and watched and I’ve been binge watching a lot of them cuz they’re just so informative and enlightening. Need to sleep now (1:30am now! lol). Plan to definitely check the rest of your channel ASAP and see if this could be for me. I might just follow your recommendation of the first five certs for Admins then start learning to code! Thank you for your great content and being so very inspiring! Take care and all the best David!!!

I come from a Marketing Automation background, specifically Infusionsoft and I am most of the time a solo admin with requirements of integrating 3P apps (Thank God for Zapier!!). I recently passed the Admin Exam (with Zero SF Prod Experience) because of your advices (and promotions --> Focusonforce! ). I want to learn how to code but is it true that it's better to have an admin work experience first before learning Apex?

You are so inspiring. I wish someone had told me 10 years ago that anyone can learn to code and that women can pursue a tech career. My question is, is it harder to learn to code in your 30s vs. your 20s? I have a feeling you will say that "it doesn't matter" and you are probably right.
@dvdkliu
@dvdkliu 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Crystal! I'm in my 30s with two kids now and making time to learn is definitely tougher. On the flip side it takes me longer to make these videos than to study lol. I would use other resources in my 30s to accelerate my process such as money, connections, experience, etc. Some parts are harder and some are easier, it's the same card game with some different hands!

A better question would be: which languages or frameworks should you learn in 2020? Here is an idea, learn SAP or Salesforce, and potential employers will demand years of experience before they hire you. For SAP or Salesforce they will try to make you work for free for a couple of years - what you gonna do, to beat the competition. I will tell what to do to not work for free or need a couple of years of experience before you land your first job. DO NOT LEARN SAP OR SALESFORCE. learn React.js or Java. For React.js, 3 to 6 months into your self study you will land a world class job. No questions asked, because there more jobs than there are devs. Unlike SAP or SF, which is the other way around more devs - for SAP and SF - than there are jobs. For Java, they will even train you for free and then offer you a job. React.js and Java, NOT SAP or SF, simple. Good luck.
