Delimiting, tuning, or derestricting your electric bike is an appealing prospect when taken at face value. But are there risks? Watch as Hector and Scott break down everything you need to know before tuning your electric bike. Delimiting your electric bike allows you to push your motor to limits that the speed limiter will not allow. So you can go as fast as you'd like! But are the motors designed with that purpose in mind? Find out the benefits and the risks by watching this tech tip!

Yeah but in Europe and the UK we get limited to 15mph, when Bosch will warranty the EXACT SAME MOTOR for up to 20mph in the US. This really isn't practical for commuters. Those extra 5mph makes a huge difference with confidence on the road. Also, I doubt there is a big difference with the internals of a Performance CX vs a Performance Speed motor. So it seems like Bosch is skimping on their warranties and hiding behind legislation.

While I agree that riding too fast on a mountain bike, off road, is not being a good steward or citizen. The video title did not specify "mountain" but rather all electric bikes. Going up hill on a mountain bike with a mid drive motor, it is nigh on impossible if not extremely difficult to go faster than 15mph on a class one bike...hard to actually achieve the 20 mph limit. Going downhill, ebike or acoustic bike, the speeds are the same limited mostly by trail conditions. On roads, especially going through towns with traffic, a bike is actually safer going at the speed of the cars on the road. Delimiters allowing one to exceed 20pmh on roads actually make a lot of sense. Once the warranty has expired, turning a class one into a class three using a delimiter or dongle is a personal choice and can be both safer and more fun. I have had a delimiter on my 2018 Riese & Muller Delite for over 3,000 miles and have had no motor issues. It runs a quiet and smooth as it did when I bought it. I don't go over 15 mph on mixed use trails on any bike and usually slow to a crawl passing parents with kids or people walking dogs, only speeding up when there are no other pedestrians around. The reality on mixed use trails is that the most flagrant violators of the usual 15 mph bike speed limit are roadies, ripping past people with their drop bars and spandex, often well in excess of 20mph and never slowing down. No motor, no class limitations, just rude and careless cyclists. Rules and restrictions are a poor substitute for good manners and being considerate of others, When it comes to how I want to modify my bike, and what the consequences might be for doing something ill advised, if I am not endangering others, I'll make my own choices, thank you very much,

I removed mine because my bike was cut out at 15.9 mph. The darn thing is it sold in France it has a CX motor which is plenty capable of doing up to 28 mph. Now I only use it to go 20-22 mph. It was well worth it I’m out of warranty anyway. Anyone who abuses it to go 40 or 45 mph in Trail deserves to get kicked off the trail

For my E-MTB I have never needed to go faster than 20. On singletrack I honestly can't go faster than about 10 anyway. And when I'm riding in semi-legal areas I just keep my speed the same as my analog bike (unless maybe no one is looking). For my commuter though...bumping it from 20 -> 28 would be huge. In neighborhoods the speed limit for cars is 25. Being able to go their speed would be pretty nice. As it is, some people will try to pass me when it's not safe if I'm "only going 20 MPH." Probably will just buy a commuter that goes 28 in the near future. :D

First, it is true, we don't need bad publicity from emtbs,...emtb trail access is still unacceptable in many places in the USA. However, there are a couple incorrect assertions here...1) 45mph is NOT a reasonable attainable speed on an unrestricted class 1 (250w) emtb any more than it would be on a regular pedal bike. Look at the tests done by EMTBN...regular bikes actually had higher top speeds than derestricted emtbs. I find that to actually not to be true, but the difference is maybe a few mph at most 2) High speed does not equal high torque or stress on motor. Electric motors are fine spinning much faster than the limiter. If 28mph is fine on the road, the same motor is not getting "stressed" going 28mph on dirt. . 3) The only reason for the speed limiters is legislation. The 250w nominal rating of all class 1 emtbs is the limiter in and of itself ,and the only one needed.

Totally agree on the speed restriction. On a side note, what about delimit the Orbea Rise EP8 RS to full 85NM? Since it's just software de-tuned, wonder' if they will come out with a de-limit option, what are your thoughts on that?

This is a case of lumping everyone in one bucket. I ride my eMTB exclusively on public, gravel roads, because that is all we have here. And so I am stuck with artificially limited Levo speeds for a motor that, on other models from the same brand (Vado), is set to a 45 km/h limit. Talking trails, my experience from where I previously lived is that there are very few times where you can go above 32 km/h, except on downhills, where the motor isn't much help anyway. I'd be open to learn if others have differing experiences on this, and have seen significant cases that justify the motor speed limit off road. For the most part, the only time while using the motor I can get above 32, up to 45 km/h, is on paved roads, and usually with favorable wind or incline. So why do we have speed limiters, and why is it morally wrong to override them? I need an eMTB for our terrain, and why am I caught up in this narrow-brain thinking that is basically dictating that I can't buy an appropriate bike for my location?

my eMTB is 32 km/h (which is fine, I can't ride that fast in twisty trees anyway) but my egravel is euro-spec 25 km/h which is all but useless on the roads and probably actively more dangerous for me in traffic. I've had a warranty claim out for 6+ months now to get it switched to the 32 km/h limit that it should be here and that hasn't happened yet, so at this point "no warranty" isn't much of a threat anyway

The limits suck for road riding. Most good motors have spare capacity. Warranty is only good for 1 year. The nanny state rules today

That makes no sense to let the on road bikes go 28 but in the dirt you can only do 20! And your saying the off-road models won’t be warranted if they go over 20 but the on road bikes going 28 won’t harm the motor?🤷 the limiter messes you up in jump lines and is so annoying!

@@jeffdoetzer5431 u got understand that some areas don’t allow the Class1 eMTBs because they think 20 mph is a motor vehicle, some people want the Class1 eMTBs to be treated like it a motorcycle. That’s why we have to follow the federal law in place, we all know u can go faster than that on DH s on any bike. But the key is getting access across the US. 🎯Federal law #Class1 #eMTBs are not considered motor vehicles period, here is the law pls read it, DOI based this information off this Law www.congress.gov/107/plaws/publ319/PLAW-107publ319.htm

Not mentioning the legal aspect of it. If you get into an accident with an unrestricted bike, that might not be a "bicycle" anymore, but a motorbike. Then comes the riding a motorbike with no insurance, no plates, no signals/lights/horn/etc, and possibly no license. Sure, you can say you never get into an accident, until a kid runs out in front of you and because of the de-restriction your "legally an accident" is suddenly upgraded to something much worse. I am sure your local lawyer can list 5+ ways to screw you if you ride anything modified on the street and get into a crash.... including some that might end you in prison for extra fun :( In some countries (I think France is one of them) police is actively checking/hunting modified e-bikes. All we need is a couple of stupid un-restricted bike accidents, then they will try to put plates, insurance on all bikes, and it will be the same constant *harassment* (random police checks) as riding a motorbike/car.
