Great Run! The crit and miss brute forcing is a classic that's always fun to see. It hurts a little bit to see someone do a challenge run without understanding the difference between special and physical attacks. That said, pokemon never explains it, and they actually changed how it worked between gen 3 and 4. Most people take for granted their in-depth knowledge of pokemon without realizing people learn it from wikis or other people. The games don't help you at all here, and you can go your entire life without ever realizing it. Case and point, this video, and many many other people. In gen 1 through 3 (including fire red and leaf green), special and physical is decided by type. Very simplistic but also counter intuitive (i.e. Ghost is a physical type). Understanding this, in this game Harden only mitigates Onix weakness to Ground and Fighting type moves. He remains forever weak to grass and water without special defense boosting items. And I think Sandstorm counts as a sp.def buff, unless that was a gen 4-5 change. Then starting in gen 4, physical vs special is decided on a case by case, per move, basis. Fire Punch is physical but Flamethrower is special.

So Bandy a few things, good on you for trying something new! Same type attack bonus also stacks with super effective which is why Onix and Geodude go down so hard vs Misty/Erika Onix and Geodude have horrible Special defense which is why they go down so often, even against fire moves. Onix’s and Geodude’s base stats are awful I’m sorry you had to deal with this, I am glad you didn’t give the rival Bulbasaur it would have been worse. EVs are an issue in gen 3 forward... Gen 2 and Gen 1 all EVs can be maxed out. EVs can alter your Pokémon significantly. EVs are gained based on the Pokémon you have fought. Gen 1 bide is typeless you can use it vs ghosts but absolutely do not do this, it is absolutely awful to do. Seriously though good on you for completing this insane idea. I just hope you don’t dislike Pokémon after this.

It isn't Rock tomb's issue, it's onix - onix's base attack is lower than oddish's.

You can actually get through Lavendar Town with only normal type moves, but you have to have no PP so you can use Struggle

Oh boy - 1) Onix's attack stat is horrible. When said that rock tomb is a "weak move" in reality the lower attack stat matters more for the low damage output 2) Both Onix and Geodude have very low Special Defense, which is why you kept getting OHKO'd with super effective special moves. High level can't really overcome this 3) There is a thing called an X Special Defense item that actually would have bulked up your team from the Special-type water and grass type moves. X Defend did nothing 4) Similarly, Harden is a move that increases Defense, not Special Defense (you need high Special Defense for water and grass attacks) 5) At one point Geodude was holding an X Attack. These are consumable items used in battle and not hold items, so that doesn't do anything

The Misty fight was hard to watch. You don't know Pokemon at all do you? Harden raises DEFENSE. Water Pulse is a SPICAL move, therefore using SPECIAL DEFENSE.

There is an item called the guard spec that prevents your pokemon from getting their stats lowered for five turns, speedrunners use these so then they can set up without having their stats lowered

I would love if you did one of these with the anime teams.maybe do something like Jesse or James teams? They may not have their Pokémon at all times (like guys keep your Pokémon....) but it’s an interesting pool to be sure

Y'all go on about him using Harden to defend against special moves, but many of you didn't consider that his first mistake was going for Gen 3 instead of Gen 1. Bind actually affects Ghost-type unlike what he initially thought (since Bind is technically true damage), and Gen 1 is so fundamentally broken that he would have beaten the game in half the time by using glitches such as badge-boosting by pure accident. Even if he did stick to Gen 3, he could have used struggle and saved himself the headaches of so many fights whilst giving Geodude a move that's more viable than Tackle. Struggle in Gen 3 is typeless, has 50 base power and 100% accuracy. Its recoil damage is negligible if you use berries or leftovers, so most battles such as Brock's or the fights in Rock Tunnel would have been much easier. I will say I'm stupidly impressed he had the patience to pull through, and even managed to beat the entire game with this terrible team, though.

have you heard of sp. attack and sp. defense? that's right, there is two types of attacks with their own defensive and offensive stats. Harden, which raises defense, will not help against special attacks, same with onix's massive defense stat.

So I know some people don't know this, but until Gen 4, all attacking moves were either Attack or Special Attack based on their type, not based on the move itself. This is FireRed, which was made with Gen 3 mechanics. Water moves were ALWAYS Special in Gen 3 (except for Withdraw, which isn't an attacking move), so doing stuff like using Harden WILL NOT HELP against them, because Harden raises the user's physical Defense rather than Special Defense. And for all you people who only understand Gen 1, Special was divided into two separate stats (Special Attack and Special Defense) starting in Gen 2. Of course, for Misty's Gym specifically, Water Pulse is still a Special move rather than a physical one, and Onix not only has garbage base Special Defense and bad base HP, but it takes 4 times normal damage due to double-weakness. Yes Nathaniel, those type effectiveness multipliers do stack. Also, most attacking moves are affected by Damage Randomization. Long story short, every time someone gets hit by an attacking move, the game calculates 16 possible damage totals based on stats and all relevant modifiers like type effectiveness and Same Type Attack Bonus. It then chooses 1 of these 16 at random do determine the final amount of damage. The only moves that are unaffected are non-damaging moves, Psywave, 1-hit-kill moves like Fissure and Sheer Cold, and moves that deal set damage (Seismic Toss and Night Shade which deal damage equal to the user's level, Sonicboom which always does exactly 20, and Dragon Rage which always does exactly 40). I'd recommend researching the mechanics of whatever Generation you're playing before you attempt another Pokemon Challenge.

Pretty sure “surf” and “water pulse” are “special attacks” which will not be affected by “harden” at all. Harden only effects “physical attacks”… you have to raise your “special defense” to effect surf/water pulse (if im not wrong about them being special attacks lol)

He should’ve gotten both Pokémon with sturdy. That would’ve helped. Still though congrats on the win 😁
