In this video, Andrew shares why deciduous bonsai are not often named in Japan and why we should perhaps start giving them some names like we do coniferous bonsai. Or perhaps we need to start designing more unique deciduous bonsai first...

Thanks so much, Alex! We have some time this month before repotting craziness starts, so we figured it was a good time to grow the channel and start learning about how to do videos. We still have a lot to learn but learning new things with every video!

it’s easy to say this for me because is not my tree 😅 but I am challenging you to go fully opposite of classic style as discussed in the video. Remove almost all branches and leave only the ones on the top, basically where the V from on the trunk is. This to basically build a litterati maple bonsai with a small umbrella canopy. Put it on a smaller round pot and here you go you will have a Maple literati bonsai! Great video content, keep up the good work! Greetings from Iceland! yes even in Iceland we have nice valuable bonsai 😀

Thanks! I definitely have some bonsai here that are much more crazy, and some deciduous bunjin in the works too! I really want to see the confluence between traditional technique and informal trunks, so I think we’ll keep moving forward with that concept! But we’re definitely doing your suggestion on other bonsai here at RAKUYŌ

i think another factor is that in japan a part of the bonsai hobby has that sports like competitiveness where bonsai are judged based on certain criteria, pushing people to design based on a winning formula. when you throw the rule book out you get crazy cool trees that look nothing like they do in nature, and crazy cool trees that look exactly like they would in nature.

Yes, and even in Japan there are multiple formulas often times to create beauty!
