Job market in Calgary is not as good as other major cities. The rents are high. Frankly its all about survival right now as the inflation will not get any better. You are right that people should evaluate all aspects before taking any major decisions.

It depends. In Calgary, you can make a lot of money in oil and gas. They are hard jobs to get though, just like a high end finance job is hard to get in Toronto.

It's not just cost of living. The overcrowding in schools and long wait times in getting medical appointments are also becoming an issue in Calgary

Very well articulated Nishant. It’s never too late as we should never compare from the past data. We (humans) have a tendency to regret and procrastinate. As you mentioned take a well informed decision and work on it. There is always an opportunity to live, settle and blossom where you go.

I'm a software engineer and increasingly seeing jobs pop up in Calgary. So I feel like Calgary is great if u invest now because it has white collar jobs and is still very close to mountains. That being said job market right now is bad. I mean that's the case with Toronto too . My friends have not been able to secure even part time jobs there

I was watching your video when you were planning to move to Calgary and I was planning to move to GTA 😄 . That time I already spent 3.5 years in Calgary, Thank to God and stability in housing market, I was able to secure semi in GTA at the price of detached at Calgary. I always say, such you tube videos should have disclaimer similar as we see on mutual fund ads.

Do people really think the cost of living is much lower in Alberta? I don't think Calgary is the "New Toronto", because clearly the GTA is growing at very fast rates. Calgary is the new Calgary.

Cost of living has gone way up. I'm paying 1500$ for an illegal basement, excluding bills, that too away from transit. I have a full time survival job but after tax I will be getting about 2250$ which is clearly not enough. Not even to break even. People in odd jobs/ survival jobs need to do 2,3 jobs however it being a small town calgary doesn't have any cash jobs. Hiring process takes weeks and managers have an attitude, they want availability as if they are paying you not 18-20$ an hour but 30-40$ an hour? I have been here 3 months and still can not break even. My wife's expecting and can't contribute to household income right now. Hence, I'm in a very tight spot, and so are thousands of people that are coming here. Calgary is a very bad choice for immigration because: 1. Laid back small town 2. Laid back small economy 3. Received majority of Afghan refugees 4. Received majority of Ukranian refugees 5. Receives large amount of students and new PRs. But the city just doesn't have enough vibrancy and economic robustness to cater all these people. Less houses were constructed during covid. And now lots of people coming in... equals to bad bad rental market condition. And the fact that majority of affordable rental ads are nothing but scams! Mortgages might have gone up a bit but renters are the no.1 sufferers here. You can't survive on a single income here. You need to grind a lot! Plus the city is quite old, streets are dirty(poor city management) and its not a happening place to be either. Everything is quite dull over here. Only good thing is the mountain views, but those too aren't that nearby, like in toronto or vancouver. There is no large lake neae your home. In my view, calgary is a dead city with a sluggish economy and a poor vibe.
