Cheap Beginner Violin: goo.gl/aE7M8e
I always wanted to play a musical instrument but was told by many that I am too old. You see I was a ballet dancer, not a violinist and that was it. I have never played an instrument as a kid and almost everyone told me it is too late to start now. Well, almost six years ago, I thought I'd give it a try. I did it for me and that was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
In this video I share my experience of learning a musical instrument as an adult and give tips on how to start learning an instrument.

@@kaylasunny7160 I took lessons once a week with a teacher, but you can definitely start learning on your own. I recommend taking two - three lessons at the beginning, so the teacher can show you the basics on how to hold the violin and the bow and what book is best to buy to learn from. From there you can progress on your own. There are many KZfaq videos that go through basics that you can learn from ☺️

Just think of a person who is 35 years old and plays since he was five... that means that he has been playing for 30 years. Now think that he has been practicing one hour a day. So 365×30=10,950... Now let's assume that you are 35 and have been playing since you were 25 for three hours a day... So you have been playing for 10 years.. 3×10×365=10,950... exactly the same. No bad huh? So, it's all about practice and dedication.

I don't play the violin, but I am a piano professor... and let me tell you something... NONE of my students in my music school will ever play like a girl I had private classes with for 3 years... I loved working with her... She was so dedicated and wonderful... In 3 years she played things I could only dream of my students playing. So.. it's all about dedication and loving what you do. I always wanted to play the violin, but when I was 5, there were no more space in my school for violin students... it was full... and as my mother was a piano professor in that same music school, I started playing piano there. And I love it, but violin was always my unfulfilled dream. I might start learning it now. I am only 26, so.... I hope I can do it :)) you gave me hope

Thank you so much for sharing your story!!! You absolutely right, it all comes down to dedication and perseverance. I used to worry what others will think and what if I am horrible at playing violin, but once I started I have never regretted it! You have a great foundation and already miles ahead of other adult players like myself just because you understand music theory :) I have a friend who is a professional player and just picked up a violin (he is 37). He absolutely loves it, although he gets frustrated often because he is so good at reading music but can't play yet :) It is quite funny to watch him, he will practice violin for 15-20 min, then will get frustrated with his inability to play past twinkle-twinkle, switch to piano and play some super hard piece to boost his confidence, back to violin....hahahaha You are ONLY 26!!! You have time to not only learn violin, but to get very good at it!!!

I quit school band because I did not like my instrument. Violin was not available in school or I would have loved to play it. Only way I could get into it is if parents bought me one and paid for lessons and we were broke :/ A music teacher in middle school once brought in her cello to show the class, and I was crushed when she wouldn't even let me try bowing it. String instruments always interested me but my parents looked down on things they thought were for 'rich people'. When I told my parents I wanted to play as a kid they made fun of me. So now I am starting in my 20s.

I started playing e-guitar (classic rock) when I was 18. I'm now 25, and I've never ever heard someone say that you're too old to start playing guitar. I just started playing violin 2 months ago, which introduced me to the classical/orchestral music world. There seems to be this huge competitive altitude going on. Which is such a shame... What happened to just playing for fun? Not everyone has to become a professional virtuoso, and win music awards. That's not the point of music!

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi The guitar is sort of the working class of the instrument world, the violin is the 1%, metaphorically and sometimes literally. Definitely not too old. I started at the age of 38, and I’m still having fun. I think the most important thing is having fun playing the musical instrument, and not put too much pressure on yourself to become a concert performer or whatever. Learning a new instrument is fun, and nothing should stop anyone from pursuing that dream.

Hi Shy, I'm turning 60 this December and I needed some encouragement whether to attempt learning to play an instrument. My options are very limited because I am missing my index finger and part of my thumb on my right hand due to an accident when I was younger. I recently discovered the aerophone which is a wind synth instrument. The major advantage is the you can set it up to play it only with the left hand. It's designed much like a saxophone as far as fingering is concerned and which I always want to play. Im still in the research phase at present, but I pretty convinced at this point that I will make a purchase soon. Your video was helpful with my decision process, so thanks.

i started learning the violin last year at age 32 and i'm so happy i did, i get sooo much enjoyment out of it. i started on a whim, i barely even knew what a violin was, i just saw a Taylor Davis video and thought to myself "wow that sounds pretty, i've been lately feeling like i need a hobby, maybe i'll do that as my hobby." my first teacher loved having an adult student, but he retired 4 months in and i got moved to a teacher who really thought adult students are a waste of time, just kind of sneered at me the first few lessons, and i almost dropped teachers and went to self learning but thankfully he has decided i can be taught. and definitely the recital i have been in was really awkward. i felt kind of like a fool going on stage after mostly a bunch of 10-year-olds. thankfully they all messed up several times. if they had all played beautifully like little prodigies i think i might have bowed out!

Hi Kelsey, thank you so much for your comment!!! I think being in a professional ballet school for most of my life taught me a great deal of discipline. I know that to be good at something it takes a lot of practice and grind work that most don't see. In ballet, performing was always the easiest part, it is the practicing and countless hours of exercising, stretching, etc that was the hard part. I approach learning violin the same way, only practice will make me better, it is tough but it is a necessary evil :)

HI. I discovered your KZfaq channel today. I compliment you on your candor, humor and enthusiasm. I've played guitar for many years and dabble with the harmonica and keyboard. I am in my 60's from St Paul, Minn, USA. I enjoy several genre of music, including classical. For a long time I have had a fondness for the violin/fiddle (yes, both - I'm not a snob!). I have heard the 'you need to start as a child' to be any good. If I want to play for my own personal satisfaction that should be what matters. I've been around long enough to realize how often we pass up an opportunity because we think we can't, or at least question our ability to succeed. So, I'm going to find out if I can learn the violin. I've been doing my homework on suitable instruments for a beginning violinist. From the guitar I think purchasing too cheap an instrument will limit and discourage the beginner because of the limitation inherent in the instrument. I have narrowed my first violin to the $400 - $600 range, which I'm fairly certain will be very playable and with good tone wood. If you've read this far thank you for your interest and encouragement!

I am 47 years old and just learning to play the violin. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years but with work, three kids and all of their activities I knew I never had time to put into like I needed to learn to play and play good. Now my kids are grown, my work schedule is mostly part time so I have the time. As you said some think I am crazy because of my age but I didn’t let that discourage me. I’ve only been taking lessons for two months and I can see and hear some improvements. My goal is to get really good within three years since I really don’t have 10 years to just learn and get better. I know I can and will do it. Also, thanks for the tip about recitals. She told me I don’t have to but after your advice I can see where it will push me even harder to improve. So thanks for that because I hadn’t looked at it that way.

I definitely agree with all of Shy's pointers. Music Theory has certainly been one area that I am lacking. My background; played a clarinet in High School Band, got too cool for band and quit (bad decision). Fast forward 40 years, purchased a Bass Clarinet and been taking private lessons the last 5-6 years. It is fun making music even if it's a real simple piece. Would recommend trying out different instruments; woodwinds, brass or percussion. Choose the one that you like the feel and the SOUND. There isn't an easy instrument out there! they all have their challenges. Playing an instrument opens a whole new world to you; attendance at symphonies, community bands, attending performances internationally (I've been to performances in Belgium and Poland). Music is a universal language.

I'm still at it nearly 30yrs later- Morris musician, folk orchestra and ceilidh band member. At least a couple of hours playing/practice a day. The most fun you can have apart from pretty bad golf! Go for it.

Thank you very much for sharing this motivational video. :) I am 37 years of age and still afraid to start taking guitar lessons that I wanted when I was like 8-9 years of age. I feel that I am type of person that cares too much of people opinion and of course being that way I need their good evaluation so at this age I cannot still overcome that stupid fear. And I am afraid of failure I have to admit. My God how many fears I have! Anyway, take care and be blessed.

I have made so many bad decisions based on fear. You certainly aren’t alone in that. Every day is a fresh chance to face the fear and take a leap of faith. I hope you get there.

I played the drums starting at the age of 13. I played and performed until I was 24 and then gave it up. Now I do have some youthful background in music and did take some lessons when I was way younger but I sold my drum kit and hadn’t played in years. I’m almost 32 now. Anyways, about a year ago I decided I’d try it again as a hobby and I was amazed to see that after only 6 months I was better than I ever was! I practice probably 2-3 hr per day but I also take breaks. I’ve found the most growth has when I’ve taken a step back and study some history and theory as she said! Within a year, and trust me there’s a lot of practice and devotion, to the craft, I’m a better drummer than I’d ever thought I’d be. So go for it

This kind of instrument which has no fret demand its player has a very good hearing ability, the ability to identify the interval between notes. Everybody could hear, but quite few could identify the difference in pitch between notes. To learn violin, ear training is much more important than practice.

I am almost 15 and I want to start violin now. I have always been surrounded by music and was kinda forced to start piano at 4 because my mom is a piano teacher, so I've been playing for 10 years now. Most people expect me to be really good in it, but with all the force and some other factors I have lost the fun and motivation and I play... decent but not how you would expect a teen to play who has been playing the instrument for 10 years. So now I want to start violin and I can actually imagine myself having fun playing it and not giving up.

I am Polish(my mom thinks I can’t compete anymore because I stopped), I started violin+piano at a very young age (5y.o) but when I was 9 I had to quit due to moving to the U.S. At that time I was so happy I didn’t have to play. I was great at violin, I had the posture, the fingers, everything. Now I am 13 and watching my friends play makes me cry. I want to play so bad and especially compete (I loved doing it). I’ll ask my family tomorrow if I can start playing again, it feels like a missing part of my heart in a way.

I also come from a Russian background and my parents said the exact same thing "playing a instrument takes too much dedication so we will not let you do it because, to do it right, you would have to practice 8 hours a day", so instead they sent me to swimming and dancing. Now, I am 29 and I really would love to find a instrument that is right for me to learn and that I can make myself and other people happy with. I am very interested in more traditional music instruments such as the balalaika, the guxheng, the erhu, the oud, the banjo... It is so difficult to choose. Will I be good? Should I try them all and play the one that comes to me the easiest? I already have many passions, is there any point of starting something else... It's so hard to decide.

I used to play violin when I was from 9 to 12 I stopped because I was scared the lesson would be too expensive, I regret it deeply now I am 18 and I've tried to learn piano (and I'm really bad at it its been 3 years and I don't have that much of improvement) I don't know if I should try to retake violin classes because I really miss it and my sister found a great plan that would help me to learn it again without paying too much since we are not that rich. Since she found this plan I'm always thinking about it I don't know if I can try to learn how to play it again my teacher used to tell me that I was really good actually but I don't, I'm afraid that I lost too many years without practicing etc and I am feeling rather "old" to restart again I really don't know what to do, whenever I hear or see a violin I feel something in my heart something sweet, a lot of passion and love but I don't know if I still have all the skills and stuff..../:

I'm 45 and began playing 3 years ago. For better or worse, my teacher is KZfaq. I've practiced almost every day for an average of 40 minutes (not hours) a day. I can play along to pieces, or play by memory, but I can't read music fluently enough (yet). I also play the guitar, the ukelele and the didgeridoo. Playing the violin made me a better uke/guitar player too. It really teaches you intonation.
