I know I'm going to get alot of questions about the bumper design! So I don't have to say the same thing over and over, this is what I said to someone in the comment section when asked about the bumper. My opinion on these Tacomas is that they need a very light duty bumper to be safe. Tacomas have a very high safety rating because of the complex air bag system. If I used a heavy-duty 1/4" thick bumper, not only would it bend the frame in a scenario like this, but it would negatively affect the safety system in this truck. The gladiators come stock with steel bumpers and are designed to function with that aspect in mind. These Tacomas are designed with no front bumper from the factory... like a car. Just a thin piece of plastic re-enforced with soft foam. It's a safer design, and I don't want to make it so the airbags don't deploy in a serious accident. I think a heavy-duty front bumper is going to impead the air bags from functioning properly. This isn't advice for anyone else it's Just my 2 cents. This bumper worked exactly how I designed it! It didn't transfer much energy into the frame because I built it out of .095. After seeing how well this worked I'm planning on using the same philosophy in the next bumper on this truck 💪. Stay safe out there folks.

I think that's exactly the right approach to take. As you've unfortunately shown here, when you drive an offroader on the road regularly, accidents do happen. Stiffening up the front end (or rear for that matter) too much with heavy duty bumpers, bracing, cage extensions, etc. will absolutely reduce the safety of the vehicle in a medium or high speed collision. Crumple zones are there for a reason!
@coopkink
@coopkink Ай бұрын
This is a great comment and im glad I saw this. It makes sense to build a bumper similar to what the factory designed and tested so that it fairs well in a collision. As someone who wants to design their own stuff someday, this is great to know. An unrelated note, love seeing such a healthy family dynamic, I aspire to be like this.

So far, I've resisted the urge to mod my 21 LB Taco offroad other than a couple of items that have paid off on a few occasions such as sliding sideways off of a trail or two, etc. I've stuck to the Sr Citizen mods, yet you keep motivating me to scratch that itch so to say! Stay safe and thank you Nate.

I took all my receipts to the insurance from building it and got a healthy check from the insurance, stripped it down, and started over with it. It now has a V8 with 1 ton axles and sits on 37s, so I can still daily it without breaking the bank with wearing out 40s! They could clear, but they might rub offroad.

I had the opposite outcome when my Jeep XJ got rear-ended a few years ago. Insurance only counted upgrades that were damaged and had been installed in the last 12 months. So my jeep to them was just a 20+ year old suv with 200k on it. So, I got like $3k for something I had more than $10k into and did not have the option to buy it back.

Sorry to see the Taco looking like this, but as long as you walked away, that's the important thing. I was in a accident where the driver flew out my door and my best friend John Jimenez died, August 19 1991, I was 16 he was 17 , the driver was in his early 20s and had been institutionalized multiple times, he's actually back in now. I ended up destroying my back and the driver broke his neck, and John was DOA, it's something that haunts me since 1991 , my life drastically changed, now with my Tacoma S.A.Swap being so tall it's amazing I'm able to get in or out and go offroad. I pay for it, and the meds help, but just TG you don't have to go through that, it lasts a lifetime! Definitely sucks for the elk but hopefully it doesn't go too waste? When I lived in North Western PA, the deer 🦌 killed by cars went to the homeless, I'm sure you'll build her up better than before, 21,000$ I'd be a S.A.Swapping MoFo!

Glad you're healthy and able to tell the story! Nice that you'll get to do some upgrades now too, even if unplanned. Great video, always wondered how insurance would handle a modified rig, sorry you had to be the one to let us know! Keep up the great stuff Nate!

DAMN, Glad to hear and see you are okay Nate. We have moose in norther New England, and I cannot tell you the amount of vehicles that get totaled by them. Again, really glad you are okay. I'm a Toyota die hard, enjoyed your Tacoma build and all your videos.
