It seems you did a really fast video on this guitar, like someone was waiting on you to go to dinner or something. I absolutely love your show and try not to miss a episode of this and PG’s Rig Rundown. Please don’t get in a hurry, I am a Sheraton II fan and every band I play with wants to pass mine around and we were waiting for this review. I really couldn’t tell if it was positive or negative? I watch for education: where does the Tree of Life come from and why are they only on certain models? Is this tuner designed to “Click and stay?” Sheraton models have different sized frets than 335’s which can make soloing a different experience. I love ya man and I’m so happy that you now have a Trogly model. I’m very surprised that I talked to 6 guitarists of acoustic to metal genres this week and before I got any farther than “Hey are you familiar with the Trogly...?” They cam right back with “Ya I saw the LP 400 or whatever they’re calling it” and said they hope for an Epi version with a lighter finish that will be easier to see, BUT THEY ALL KNEW ABOUT IT! I would just like to see a little more love thrown to Epiphone, maybe some knowledge you can share or something. The Probuckers sound great and the new management at Gibson needs ESPECIALLY people like you tho recognize the increase in quality they have achieved. The new T-Bird bass and it’s bridge, the new P-90’s and why is average folks are pulling out old ones to put these in??? Why are companies so backordered on the Epi’s? You’re the guy to ask! Just please don’t lose sight that is blue collar folks watch too. And there’s a lot more to the Wolfe than was discussed. Love ya and stay safe!!

Concerning the Tuners - I had the same issue with my Sheraton Stealth, I emailed Epiphone and explained the issue and even used the time signature on this video to explain in Trogly's words/example what was happening, Epiphone emailed me back and confirmed that this is NOT normal and they offered to send me a new set of machine heads. Just an fyi for anyone else that might experience the tuner issue pointed out at 17:14 .

My "Wolfe" arrived a couple of days ago. I was inspired to buy it by the long unsatisfied lust for a Trini Lopez and watched an interview with Emily about what she got from a Sheraton. Still, I watched your sage opinion, Trog, first -- so I went in with my eyes open. Finish-wise, it's what you'd expect from a higher-end Epiphone; I mean, it's well-prepped gloss and binding - not nitro. The aged hardware is frosted, not buffed down like a Gibson aged, and the Grover tuners on it are equally satin, making them seem more plastic than usual. However, I didn't get the stepping issue that you seemed to have when turning them, in fact, they were silky smooth. It could be something that Epiphone fixed in production. A couple of days into playing and fiddling with the tone, the sweep on the volume pots seems uneven. The neck pickup (which I think Emily mentioned she never switches away from) is the star performer, and I had expected to be a bit disappointed with the bridge following your comment but after some real tweakage with the master tone and amp, I did get some really satisfying tones out of it. So the pickups are staying. The fretboard does look quite light and dry so I'm thinking of getting some monty again wax to darken and smooth it. In the end REALLY, REALLY pleased with it. I've tried a bit of Wes Montgomery and some Van Halen... sooner or later I'll have to attempt some Foo Fighter tunes. Thanks so much for your review, it helped me know what I was getting. You're a star!
@alexweinle9288

I'd also mention that it seems to have been fret-levelled in the factory... which is good. But if you look at some of the frets, they have quite an aggressive filing (I assume this isn't a plek as I didn't pay for that). You can't feel it under the hand, but at some point, I'd like to take it in to get them polished at a luthier when setup time comes around.

The clipped ear head stock gets a bad rap from people who think it's just a Gibson headstock with the corners chopped off. By it's self it isn't a nice looking I agree. But with binding and using the correct historical size it's typical of 30s era of ornate headstocks. The clipped parts where considered hard to bind and showed the craftsmanship need to make a guitar headstock like that.

Bought it. I’ve played over 40th years and have owned many guitars but never a semi-hollow. Could have picked up gibson 335 many years ago for cheap but didn’t care for it. They just never felt right. Recently I have a need for one for gigs and I took a chance on this one because of the good reviews and I really dig the look of it. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised how wonderfully it sounds and plays. Just as good and in some ways better than the gibsons I’ve played. For the money you can’t beat it. No regrets and would buy it again. I still want a Duesenberg but no need for a gibson 335 ever. I also have a strange feeling that this thing will double in value in years to come because of its unique look and features and likely limited run.

The “Flower Motif” inlay on the headstock is known as the “Epiphone Vine Inlay”. That’s what they called it on my 1988 Epiphone Sheraton. The one on mine is exactly the same shape, but they used abalone, so there’s a rainbow of colors throughout the inlay, and it’s gorgeous! Mine cost $879 in 1987, so the price on this one is not bad at all. I changed the Grover COPY tuning machines mine came with for the REAL ones Gibson uses.

Pau Ferro is a solid fretboard material. The aged gold hardware and satin type finish on this axe is sweet. Let alone the fact that this is an Epiphone with actual mother of pearl inlays. You might find some epiphones with MOP headstock inlay, but to find one with MOP fretboard inlays is even more rare. I feel like this guitar is probably going to go for a premium in the future.

Awesome guitar! Yesterday my Epiphone ES-339 was delivered to my local guitar shop. It's pretty heavy, but so far I love it! It's a keeper for me, definitely! I prefer the smaller body, but this one intrigues me. I should try it just to compare it to my ES-339. Emily Wolfe is also a pretty cool artist!

I’ve been dying for an affordable Dave Grohl model but this is probably more my style. Maybe throw in some new pickups and a coil split and I imagine it would be perfect. Can’t wait to get my hands on one

Same, I’ve even been looking at the replica Dg-335😬 I know. It’s dicey, but this could be my way of getting one. Only thing I wish it had was the firebird headstock. (Maybe the split diamond inlays too🤗)

That new headstock is night and day better. Looks so damn good now compared to the horrible old ones. It’s a damn shame the epiphones get long neck tenon while Gibson USA does not and has a fake ABR-1 bridge posts.

I'd be curious if changing the tightness of the screw on top of the tuner would changing anything with the 'stepping' on the tuners... Maybe too tight? I wouldn't expect that from those grovers, usually great tuners...

I suspect it has something to do with the satin finish. Often the satin finish on metal is achieved with fine grit blasting. The resulting surface has a texture. If the spindle and button are blasted together the surface finish might account for the 'gritty' action. I have the regular highly polished grovers (18:1) and they are super smooth to use.

@@insalinity5558 I tried adjusting the screw on my tuners and it made no difference - the gritty and stiff feel was still there. it was pretty extreme to the point hat they were not really useable to tune properly. But they did look really nice!

As far as the tuners, it could be the little washers they put in there sticking. You could try backing the screw out a bit and see if it smooth's out, if not it's in the tuner itself

I agree that it might not be the tuners themselves and I’m wondering if the nut is the problem. The slots look too deep and too tight.

Sometimes they have great features that aren’t available on other models. I think everyone should own the most popular signature model of all time a Les Paul (either a Gibson or an Epiphone) at some point in their guitar journey. I’ve been a diehard Fender (and Squier) user since I started playing in the late 80s. When I started watching this KZfaq channel a couple of years ago he made me reconsider my dislike of the Les Paul. Back in February I finally found the Les Paul that was the one for me.

real gold will never corrode or tarnish, it stays bright forever except for dirt and grime stuck to it. But gold coins have been brought up from being at the bottom of the sea for many centuries and it shines.

A bit of feedback from satin black finishes: I've got a PRS SE in that finish, brand new, back in 2018. It's really cool looking if that's your cup of tea, and comes with the bonus the neck also feels super smooth compared to their sticky-feeling, glossy counterparts. Black specifically will indeed have your fingerprints sticking out like a sore thumb, but nothing a quick wipe with a lint-free rag won't sort out. Do keep in mind the one problem with Satin finishes is that rubbing your palms on it will act as a very mild abrasive and polish it into a shiny surface overtime. Let me tell you my PRS, while not having played but an handful of gigs due to Covid striking halfway through my ownership, it gets played almost daily and it doesn't appear showing any shiny spots anywhere; my sweat is very acidic, too, so it goes as hard as possible. This surely depends of the quality of the finish, as my classical, also in satin, already has the back of the neck full gloss. For anyone interested in buying a satin instrument, I recommend looking online for one heavily played to know the worse you can expect - check for LTD EC-1000 VM or a Schecter Blackjack, two very popular satin black guitars on Reverb, and you should get some realistic results. I was aware of that before buying and did search for it, but don't mind it at all - that's some real relic in my book - but not everyone might enjoy that and there's no way to ever turn it Satin again, only option is then buffing it all into gloss.
@acoffeewithsatan
@acoffeewithsatan 3 жыл бұрын
@@primeDecomposition thanks for the suggestion, but it won't match the rest of the finish. Satin finishes (at least quality ones) are achieved with a special clear coat that will naturally lay rough to a microscopic level, in a "bumpy" pattern. If you sand it, you'll just cause microscopic scratches that won't look even, it'll stand out more than it did originally. Ofc, you could suggest then just buffing it entirely. It'll then look bad evenly, not to speak making it less durable since you remove the satin coats' top layer and, if you just buff it like that too often, you'll buff through the clear into the base coat in no time.

Could the thing you dislike about the tuners actually be an issue with the nut? Perhaps if the slot is not cut right, it is binding and when the wound strings move through the nut they sort of catch with each winding? Does it do the same on the plain strings? Rad guitar though. Just when I thought I didn't need another...
