@@rodrigocosta2365 The question is: are you correct? Would WOTC makes more money by saying "fuck you" to investors? They probably make a LOT of money from investors, collectors, and peoples who have enough money to not care about prices. And there is possibly not that much more money to be maid by decreasing their prices, as there are a lot of other card games with more affordable prices. Chances are that you don't know more than me on that, and that "we will make more money selling boxes and packs" is more a wishful thinking of you (because peoples want to believe that the morally correct choice is also the optimal choice) than an economical reality. I mean, I don't like Magic economical system, as I don't like CCG economical system at all (I prefer LCG), but maybe the reason why Magic is still alive today, compared to a lot of other game I liked but died, is that there are enough rich peoples paying absurd amount of money for Magic cards.

No, they don't. Like most companies, Wizards is obsessed with achieving the highest possible margins on their products, because that looks good to shareholders. They also fail to realize that the better-designed and more fun the game is, and the more (non-monetary) value in packs, the better the game will sell.

The biggest problem with this set are not the box to card prices. But if there are cards that see play they become exponentially more expensive than regular cards since they were only printed in a special product. Which is strongly reinforced by the callback "reprints" since they lower the actual amount of legacy legal cards reprinted into modern.

Sadly, I do not believe many game stores will charge $6-$7 a pack. My LGS is charging $8 a pack and draft will be $25 for as long as the event is going. The horizon lands and snow lands seem to be the cards in this set that will see value in upcoming years, but I do not see many other cards making a massive impact in modern or maybe commander.

I have a feeling LGS's are getting hammered by the price on this. My LGS is awesome with pricing, I can still get out-of-print boosters for 90/box (I've bought Shadows Over Innistrad, Oath of the Gatewatch and Gatecrash each at 90/box within the past 2 months) but even they did a last-minute price hike. When I asked them to add me to the preorder list they said 200, when I picked up it was 210. Since I know very well that my store goes out of their way to offer great prices on sealed product, it makes me think that stores across the country received similar treatment from distributors.

Valuable rares and mythic rares aside, I find most of the cards quite stimulating to understand how to get the most out of them given the many mechanics. Th full art snow-covered lands are definitely a nice plus as far as I'm concerned. I don't know whether the art card will hold any financial value, but even if not they are just beautiful pieces to collect. Overall, I'm quite happy with the product.

I think this set was WoTC testing out a way around the reserved list: Now they don't need to reprint reserved list cards, they can make a new card with similar 'call-back' name and effects 'balanced for the current environment' but close enough to the same to get plenty of use. I still don't think we'll be seeing a 'Very, Very Dark Blue Lotus' anytime soon, but I really hope they keep revisiting old cards in this way.

I like to think of the art-cards as full art proxies. If someone wants to play one as the card feature I'll allow it at my table.

Hi Prof (and anyone else), thanks for the vid! From the UK here so get a bit confused by US prices . Probably a dumb question but when you say "~200 dollars" as a price is that before or after tax? What is an average level of sales tax in the US as well (I know it varies per state) . Thanks!

Hey Prof. and other TCC Alum. If I were to design a (360) Cube around this set, would you suggest putting the snow Lands in the drafting pool, or just going with the rule that all basic lands are Snow Lands. Worried about making Snow Decks too powerful. Thanks.

I wonder if I should wait a bit on the Waterlogged Grove and the Silent Clearing. On one hand, the prices might go down until the set becomes scarce, but on another note they could start seeing play like crazy and they might go up. Tough choice.

My LGS was originally selling for around 215 when I preordered, but they were awesome and lowered the price to 205 when I picked it up this weekend. (From what I can tell they have a literal wall of preordered boxes in their stock room) I expect the boxes to settle around $200 to eventually 180 in the next month or two.

Question prof, I would like to aqcuire a box for my personal collection, however I would not crack the packs by myself and instead play limited ghost draft with it for the sake of the experiance. Would you say this is a legitimate use of a seald product or am i better off playing limited at the store and buy singles instead?

I’m pretty new to magic and am still trying to understand the styles and formats of games. Can I by packs of modern horizon cards and use them in decks with my cards I already own (war of the spark, core 2019, etc) or is not allowed? It’s all the terms like modern and standard that are confusing me. Thanks

Modern has never been in my wheel house due to the pace and costs of the game, but this set spoke deeply to that part of me that had his heyday with the Tempest to Apocalypse era. I won't be getting any boxes, but I am sure as hell getting me some of those new slivers and legendary characters for my storyline binder.

Quality Control Issues: Every time a new magic set comes out I pick up a box to open for fun and to add to my collection. I am especially fond of the Masters sets and was excited about Modern Horizons which to me is in the same vein. As I normally do when a new set comes out, I left my office today for lunch and walked to the local game shop to purchase an entire sealed box of Modern Horizons for $249.99. I then returned to my office and opened the entire box. Within the first few packs I noticed something was very wrong with this box. 60% of the packs ended up missing multiple uncommon cards, three of the packs were missing multiple playable cards and instead hand multiples of the art cards, four of the packs had 4 token cards in them rather than the cards in those specific slots, and 30% of the packs were missing the snow covered land cards. Other minor issues were present also such as scuffing on the foil cards and a few common cards with some type of tooling marks. I have opened many boxes of magic before and there is always some little issues with specific sets but nothing worth complaining about. However, I was really disappointed in this specific box. These cards are expensive and I felt cheated by all the non playable cards stuffed into the packs from what is obviously some type of manufacturing issue. I am not sure what changed in the packing process but it seems to be an issue that could ruin a great product if it is more widespread than me. The code on my box is NC9051 1. Anyone else have a similar issue or was this a fluke box? I reached out to Wizards, but haven't heard back yet.

The mention that this is Time Spiral 2 in regards to design makes a lot of sense to me regarding the decisions in this set, particularly slivers. But if WOTC chooses to create more love letters in this regard, I hope they tap back into the past, specifically, the Rath Cycle, or even Urza's. That would be nostalgia overload.

I bought a box specifically to pull out months/years from now to draft with my friends I've gotten into Arena recently when they're ready for all the mechanics. P.S. the art cards are legit my favorite part of the set. Should definitely be a $4-5 booster pack though...

I second your statement that this set is great to draft in. I played draft and sealed yesterday and had alot of fun. However, my lgs charged $249.99 for the promo booster box with tax, it came to $270 Their reasoning was the $8 price for boosters.
