Is It Worth It to CREATE Your Own FILM STUDIO or Should You Rent? (How to Build a Studio)

Күн бұрын

Often here at Film Jams we are asked if it is worth it to create your own film or photo studio. Should you get your own, rent from someone else’s, or shoot in your house? How about all the gear you have to buy along with it and other extraneous costs? And how to build a studio? Watch the video to find out more!
It is important to consider location when thinking about how to create a film studio. Do you live in a huge city like New York City, a mid-sized city like us in St. Petersburg, Florida, or a small town? Our team considered what our area already had to offer before we began. It was either large, expensive studios, or tiny studios that had older gear and lackluster locations, like next to the train tracks. We decided to open our studio as a mid-sized option to fill that gap for video and photo studio rental in our area.
What about home studios? Can you create a video studio in your house? If you have some spare space or an extra room, it might make sense to utilize it for certain projects. Creating your own DIY film studio should be a space that works for what you need to do. Customize it for your video production or photography studio needs.
It’s also important to consider how many clients per month you'd need to meet basic rent for the studio or soundstage on top of your other expenses. Is it realistic to break even? How big are your video studio projects? Do you need the space and professionalism of your own studio or are you small enough that a small setup in your house will work? And ultimately, should you create your own film studio? These are just some of the questions we address in our video this week.
So photo studio rental or buy? A DIY film studio may help you get started - so check out our tips! Let us know any questions you might have about our experience renting our own studio by commenting below!
If you have any questions on the techniques used in this tutorial video on building a production studio, please send a note in the comments. Thanks for watching Is It Worth It to Create Your Own Film Studio or Should You Rent?, in our Film Jams series!

Thanks for checking in! Well we outgrew the original studio that this video was about and recently moved into a place about 3x the size 12,000sq ft. Our latest feature film project was Mother Nature and the Doomsday Prepper (you can check it out on IMDB). We shot about 1/3 of the movie on our LED wall (Studio A). We have a lot more info on the instagram for the movie where you can see BTS in the studio: @mother_nature_movie

I bought an old former theater building about the same size as your studio and turned it into a studio so I could film my own movies. It's in a small town so it wasn't very expensive so I don't have to depend on renting it, the building was just $18K plus another $10K to fix it up and the utilities and taxes are less than my house. I do film in the house too. It's also nice because it did have restrooms, an office and other rooms including space in the balconies, a high ceiling, even a garage door for driving vehicles in. I do use every bit of space like you do. I think if you can do most of the work yourself and can find an existing building that it's definitely the way to go.
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 3 жыл бұрын
That’s really cool! I envy the price you got your building for! What a deal. And yes it’s definitely helped us grow our business and even allows us to get more creative with our own projects. We have space for props, costumes, building sets, etc. Having the space to organize is really more useful than I probably would have thought before we had it! Thanks for watching and good luck in your film endeavors 😀👍🎥

I would love to see a full cost breakdown. How much did everything cost? How much liquid cash did you need up front to make this happen? Who did you hire to help? How much time it took for you to pay back the loan and start bringing in revenue? Did you have prior experience using a studio? How much technical knowledge did you need to make this happen? How did you prioritize what equipment to purchase first? Do you find your life to be more difficult or easy after opening the studio? What would you have done differently? Did you do any marketing or advertising? What was your business plan like? Did you purchase any used equipment? How many employees are there at the studio? How many hours a week do you think you spend there? That's a lot of questions I know, but I'm considering going down this road myself. Thanks for your help!
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 4 жыл бұрын
Hey!!! Awesome questions. We will def make a video about that! I think I can give some insights to you and hopefully help you before you go down that road! #1 and most importantly - hire good people to help you set it up, (lighting console, ceiling grid, and cyc walls) and #2, yes always be looking for great used deals on gear. I picked up a whole set of C-stands and apple boxes from another studio owner that was retiring and saved a bit of money from the new prices - those are items that don’t really age too badly. Craigslist, EBay, etc always be looking for the next deal so you can add to you equipment inventory. I’ll be back with more answers in a video ;)

Thanks! So far it has. Most months we at least break even on it and aside from that it allows us to shoot our KZfaq channel and have a place for us to edit, store gear, and collaborate- so definitely worth the price of admission. Though when we first started - the first couple years - some months were slower. But that’s why in the beginning it helps to rent out spare rooms to cover any extra overheard you might have. Awesome video!!!! I'M 4 months too late. Just purchased a 60 x 80 feet (35' ceiling)...from your experience what would you estimate (just guess) the cost be for a full thorough sound proofing job to complete the soundstage???? In Houston Tx
@FilmJams
@FilmJams 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! 😆 congrats on your space! Sound proofing can get pretty expensive. It really depends on how you do it and how the building is built. In our space we literally built an extra wall on the back wall of the space between the outside. Then added sound proofing and then re-drywalled so there was a secondary wall between the outside. The other 3 walls in our space were luckily not touching outdoor walls. So we only needed to do the 1 wall and the ceiling. The ceiling you can spray or you can build it out for a more DIY approach before you add your grid. I’d estimate $10,000 to $50,000 depending on how many walls and what you do with the ceiling. Hope that helps!

White or black ceiling is really personal preference. I know a lot of studios prefer black to avoid the reflection of light. I have white ceilings in mine tho. Curtains can be thousands. That really depends on where you’re at. By us it’s about $12 per sq foot - includes buildout of the space. In New York city or LA you could probably quadruple that cost or more. Then we spent about $50-$100k on lighting & grip gear and grid, etc.

The studio itself? The gear? The building materials? There’s a lot of ways to answer that!

@@FilmJams The studio itself... because I know each individual. Will get different types of gear and materials based how and what they invision. So yeah the cost of actually creating it ,and how much time did it take?
@FilmJams

@@smile4me576 the actual cyc and grid were about $50k labor and materials not including any lighting or electrical work. But that was 12 years ago. Now it’d likely cost double as materials are so much more expensive. Took us about a month with 5-6 people working every day.
